Thanks for a great video sir! So many people want to start a bon fire to get the smoke working and you just showed a small piece of paper and some hay make some incredible smoke! Thanks for that. I use last years maple leaves from my yard. Same billowing white smoke and nice and cool. Thanks for what you do.

Always get a quality smoker. The cheap smokers on the market can suck the fire from the canister back into the bellows and ruin your bellows and catch fire. Even if you only have a few hives get the larger smoker like Kamon's it will produce cooler smoke that the short ones and last longer.

I use wood chips with my smoker, the wood chips/shavings that is used for bedding for pets. I light it with a match/lighter and some paper and if done right will have cool smoke and will last. I only use the smoker once in while when inspecting my hives, but I usually have it lit when I go deeper into hive or when the bees seem to be agitated for that day. I use a el cheapo smoker with no issue as far as I know.

Hi Kamon, I remember 30 years ago how difficult time I had in learning to keep a smoker lighted.....until I asked a Master Beekeeper how to do it. Anyway he taught me as you just demonstrated......Sometimes I use binder twine if it is the natural fiber not the plastic stuff some places sell. Sometimes i use dry hay, or dried grass clippings.....pine needles seem to be abundant in the southern states....I like your teaching ability. Rick in Pa.

Watch using old shirt material. Synthetics would not be advisable, cotton t shirts are fine but synthetics are laced with chemicals.

I have 2 question - Whats the easiest way to clean out your smoker? The other question is I see some bees bringing in pollen say 3-4 out of 10 could I feed them some pollen patties to help boost brood? maybe a 1/4 of a patty ? I have 2 nucs with plastic foundation and they are slowly building it out. Feeding 1-1 for about 2 weeks now.
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 5 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I just scrape the smoker with a hive tool if it get clogged up top. Some will blow torch the thing but I don't. If the bees are bringing in a good bit of pollen they likely won't eat the sub. If they are only bringing in a little bit I would give them a small patty and see how they consume that and go from there.

I've been using burlap for yrs, there's a couple coffee roasting places not to far away. I seldom put on a vail and use very little smoke, I store my smoker in a Homer bucket with the top on so mice do not think it's a teething ring.

LMAO wood chips will burn all day if you keep it fed just like hay and light with a match too. Using a deep smoker helps keep the smoke cool a long with not pumping your bellows like a steam engine at full throttle. Slow and easy is all you need.
