This video will cover Pro Audio Speaker Placement, and cover topics such as:
-comb filtering
-power alley
-corner loading
-boundary cancellation
Ratio doubling means:
− a sound pressure level of +6 dB SPL
− a power level of +3 dB
− an electric voltage level of +6 dB
− a loudness level of +10 dB
− 10 dB more SPL means 10 times increase in amplifier gain (amplification)
Unscientifically most people notice a difference of 3db, and 9db is perceived to be twice as loud.
Your main speakers should generally be about 10-15 feet apart. Assuming a 90° horizontal coverage, the speakers should be no further apart than twice the distance between the speakers and the first row of audience members. In other words, if the first row of the audience is 10 feet away from the speakers, the speakers should be no more than 20 feet apart. But assuming a smaller dance floor, if your audience is closer to you than 10 feet, which at most weddings they are, 10 feet apart would cover people dancing 5 feet in front of you. So rather than applying emotional reasoning like "headphone effect", start applying logical reasoning.
Coupling the subs will get you an extra 6db, 3db from coupling and 3db from having twice the power, theoretically, but closer to a 4.5 db gain. Couple them to two surfaces (floor and wall), less than about 1 ft away, will get you another 3 db. Couple them in a corner which is three surfaces, you will gain another 3 db. These are the tools that you need to understand and experiment with. Try different corners and different wall placements. Other reflective surfaces in the room will affect these placements. The trick is to place them and listen through trial and error. Keep in mind about canceling also, This happens when a speaker is more than a foot away from a wall and less than 8 feet. So you want to keep it against the wall, or move it more than 8 feet.

From what I understand, double volume is +10db, not +3db as commonly told. Therefore + 9db is only a 90 percent increase in Sound perception by the human ear. Also, putting two sun's together gives you another 3db, two subs won't double the bass as a lot of people believe. Therefore: On the floor +3db Two together + 3db Next to a wall + 3db Equal to plus 9db ergo, 90 percent increase in perceived bass.

I DJ in a bar with a similar setup you used in this video. The original subs were hidden underneath seating throughout. We had to push them hard to feel anything and end up blowing both 15in subs. We ended up ordering a 18in sub and put it in one of the location. Once again it wasn’t hitting unless we pushed it hard to almost clip. For an event we brought in more subs and set them up on both sides of the DJ table. Still would not hit. But we moved the 18in sub into the corner to use as an DJ monitor sub. We left it there be cause we were blown away by the output from it. We thought maybe the 18in sub wasn’t broken in or something. The whole bar hits now and the 18in sub in the corner never hits clip. This works. Can’t wait to try it with my two 18in EV Subs.

Was wondering how you would recommend setting up a “garage gym” system, obv want to be able to hear the best throughout without having to over do the db level. Would you recommend 2 in wall ceiling speakers or 2 corner wall mount speakers? Dimensions are 21x21 about 9’6” ceiling height..

What result do you get if you place the speakers at the middle of walls facing 90 degrees (on your left wall and front wall)?

When you say to put your sub against the wall do you mean have the front of it facing the wall?

Typically not, but you can move it out a few inches and try facing the wall. Honestly next show you have, try moving the subs around, you will be amazed how much output difference you can get by following a few of these rules.

Yeah, I agree with the theory. On paper, yeah you're absolutely right. But, in reality, it doesn't happen. I've been involved with live sound since 1973! What really happens when you turn up at a venue is, it's full of people, and most if them are drunk. "Excuse me, we have to put our speakers here" They say to you, "F***off! I'm sat here. Put them somewhere else. So, you end up with a bad sound, again! My advice to anybody who wants to learn about live sound, is; study how a car muffler works! Study it hard. It will blow your mind! Then compare it to live sound in a club etc. Hmmm? Good luck, and peace to all.

I understand that you want to avoid all the power alley stuff, but what if you only have mains, no dedicated subs, and want a full stereo spectrum? Doesn’t that make the interference unavoidable? Or is there some other clever way to fix that?
@WorldAccordingToJim

This really only affects dedicated subs, if you only have mains you won't notice, much difference.

Power ally isn't really noticable till you get in the lower frequencies. It's the size of the waves that cause it. most main speakers just won't produce a large enough wave to worry about power allay, but can still cause phasing issues if bouncing off too many walls. On a left / right stereo set up aim your mains slightly in towards the dance floor a bit to take some bounce off the side walls and help get a fuller sound on the dance floor.

A bit off topic, but a friend bought a powered SVS sub (I THINK -- not 100% sure of the brand) and he claims the units have two available inputs -- one for line level and one for direct connection to amp output, i.e., parallel connection to the main speaker terminals. He claims the sales person told him the best way to connect would be thru the speaker connection. I thought this was absurd because with that configuration, you will be adding the amplifier noise of the main amp to the input of the sub amplifier. He said the salesman said that the reason for this hookup -- the main amp output/speaker terminal to the sub input was so that the coloration that the main amp is giving to the main speakers would also be reproduced by the sub. I hold fast to my position that such a theory is vudu audio. Even referring to your video on gain structure, it would be absurd to take a signal (amplifier out) that is a thousand times hotter than what the sub amplifier wants to see, only to then have to pad it down so the sub amp can use it without blowing itself to smithereens. Am I incorrect thinking this is a bad practice to feed any amp output signal into another amp's input, as this is just adding any anomalies of the first amp to the overall final signal? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

A little late to answer. But... Basically if it has terminal to accept speaker wire and an output to pass it though, it's not going to hurt it. It's High level input and almost always on home theater Subwoofers. The part about the coloration of the amp is technically true, all amps have a sound signature that is unique to each one, but really if you're not a super audiophile, just use the LFE out on the receiver if you don't want to use the high level.

Some power subs do have line level and speaker level inputs ( JBL does for sure ). You can run a cable out from a speaker being powered by an amp straight into the speaker level inputs on the sub. The sub has reducers to handel the power coming in. I find this to be a very a very hot signal and prefer running from the Aux or monitor channel on board to the line level on sub.
