To give your viewers a perspective on this wave I have lived on Maui for almost thirty years and this is the third time I've seen it epic over six feet. The swell rarely gets in there

Yeah it was crazy to watch and everyone was saying what were the odds I would be there (trip planned a year in advance) and this swell hits! Kaanapali too where I was and shorebreak was nuts! Was a great thing to see and enjoy!

I had to travel to Maui often for a number of years and I never got a summers swell over 2 foot. I did however enjoy some epic days during several winters.

I was lucky enough to live there in 1993. My Uncle's place was right there, front row. I scored that wave proper a few times, maybe 4-6 foot. Super FAST, ultra-shallow-urchin covered reef, and packed with heavy locals! Definite experience ce of a lifetime! Maui No Ka Oi

40+ years here and never saw a south swell like this one! South Point on the Big Island was too big to paddle in. I just watched, and lived to tell about it!

@@lavapix I was in a Fire Dept vehicle on Alii Drive the day Iniki hit. I was at Hookena Beach on "Big Saturday" this year and the swell was bigger this year in my humble opinion. Of course I'm old as hell and my memory is questionable!!

@@starkotic Iniki was by far the largest. It tore the old pier up and the Kona Inn break was so big there were at least 50 people out. We got called in from Lyman's by a cop with a bullhorn but by that time we had already been trying to come in. Of course, none of us had any idea Iniki turned into a cat 5 monster. Before the waves got too tight the intervals were great and it was clean. They closed Ali'i Dr and the rest is history. I'm old too 😎

The take-offs look like being launched into air and then the elevator drops out to the bottom and the freight train sucks you in or spits you out. Wicked thrill ride either way.

Great video! I never knew people surfed there. Probably because the only time I'm near Ma'alaea is paddling outrigger canoes, and when the surf is that big at Ma'alaea it's too big at Sugar Beach to launch the canoes. But we see Freight Trains there and we have to keep our distance. Even on a normal day those waves are scary (if you're not a surfer... and I'm not a surfer.) Thanks for showing us full runs. So many surfing videos just show part of the run.

Wow, is the water in Maui always dark green like that? I always think of the water being clear light blue in the Hawaiian Islands, and nasty dark green in freezing cold old Central California.

Pollution , the bay used to be a turquoise clear water. But years and years of runoff from sewage from injection wells and runoff from a watershed. Other parts of Maui though are very clear pristine clear water.
