Excellent results! I like your little jig. Just curious as to why you would just replace the the broken shank with a new one? Advantages/disadvantages for either way?

Good question! Two simple reasons for splicing: It’s quicker, and easier than replacing. My next video will show how to replace, and with a new piano I’ll sometimes opt do that, (for looks) but a good splice is even stronger that an original shank so it’s a good option. (Modern glues are great!) Another reason to splice has to do with grand piano shanks; Nobody usually carries extra grand shanks, so replacement isn’t an easy option. Grand shank splicing is a bit different due to shank size differences, so I’ll show tricks for that in part 2.

Haha that’s a secret! Actually, in the video I show the carton and it has the info on it. I went to about 20 fast food places, with a shank in my pocket, until I found a local greasy spoon that had them. I bought 1000 straws and give them away at conventions.
