Very commendable production of lesson 1. So often on tutorials the presenter will use short cuts and not explain what they did. Some talk so fast and work so speedily you can't keep up. Ms. Gina does not fall into that trap! Very well done!!

This is a great video. Towards the end I thought it was a very cleverly crafted plug for Toontrack's EZDrummer2, but I don't think so now. I think protoolsgirl really cares, and that it is very nice for her to put this up, because she is 100% right about EZDrummer 2: For someone who has always been daunted (and kind of hated) drum machines, it is so easy to use and absolutely helped killed a new track I've been working on. I greatly enjoyed this short informative video. I am a long time Logic Pro user and now considering a switch to Pro Tools 12. I am not a beginner but still the thought of changing my workflow and approach to production, recording and mixing makes me a bit apprehensive. My current client base "cut their teeth" on some version of Pro Tools, Reason, Ableton and FL Studio. I have had many requests for Pro Tools sessions and would be remiss if I did not at least give consideration to them. You have presented this material in a clear, concise and professional manner...and I will be subscribing and looking forward to future videos. Thanks and keep up the good work.

theprotoolsgirl I will be fixing acoustic guitar. I've been trying for some time to fix an AG bluegrass fast picking track that's perfect except for a few obvious timing issues. But my attempts at fixing it sound worse than the timing mistakes themselves. The recording was freestyle.
@theprotoolsgirl9 жыл бұрын
cmonkee100 - Freestyle meaning that it wasn't recording to a click? If that's the case... you pretty much can't fix it, except by hand, edit by edit... let me know - if you're not, you really need to record to some kind of loop or click track.....

Thanks Gina, that was really professionally done. I look forward to watching more videos in the series. I do have a concern that people with Mac Book Pro's are frequently without external drives so they get into a habit of saving on the same drive they run PT from. But that's not a good practice as the audio you record should record to a drive that is not also opening and closing files required to run your OS and your application programs and plugins. It can cause conflicts and errors with bandwidth that could make you miss that magic moment. I actually use three drives. I use an SSD for PTs built into my iMac. I use a 2nd USB3 external drive for saving the session. (I highly recommend Glyph over all others as they seem to be the best built and lots of musicians use them). I use a 3rd drive for samples used by my virtual instruments like BFD3 and Native Instrument Komplete 10. Someone below (new jersey devil) thought you should record on the main drive because it gets backed up, but I've got my iMac's "Time Machine" program backing up all three drives to yet a 4th drive (here I skimped on a Western Digital 4TB "Mybook" - good enough). Thanks again. Fred
@theprotoolsgirl8 жыл бұрын
+Fred Manteghian Thanks Fred. I cover this topic briefly is a new tutorial series I started called Pro Tools in Pajamas. I talk about external drives in the intro video. But, for beginners, I have to disagree. Hard drives drastically increased in speed over the years, so, I think your words were true 7 years ago, but not today. With that said, for advanced users, I def recommend an external hard drive. For beginners, I just think it's overkill and one more thing to overwhelm them.... this is my new playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLH5c-SgdOQ5eBmeqDpChEPtHndkGfIgrf - thanks so much for taking the time to write. Sorry it took me so long to go through my comments. I'm back in Go-Mode!!

you should do a song that uses both drums and an acoustic guitar where the guitar does an intro that leads into the drums..so like you have a click track drumbeat as you showed in lesson one then go back later and remove the drums for the intro just leaving the guitar or piano or whatever and then have drums come in after a few bars or something i think this is something that a lot of people would find very useful to learn so its not always 1 2 3 4 then the drums start right away..you can have an intro first but still have used a drum click track to get the basic song down where the drums start right away as the click if that makes sense :)

Hi, I have a question about Pro tools. Is it possible to skip from one marker to an other when listening to a session? I mean, you hit play from 0:00 and then at 1:30 it automatically jumps to 1:45 and continues to play until the end. This way I could skip the part between 1:30 and 1:45 and see if I like it. I could try to jump from 1:30 to 2:00, or to 2:15, or to 2:30, and see which version I prefer, and do the modifications within the clips when I'm ready. Thanks.

Nice video. I wanted to ask you if you encounter this as well. Whenever Pro Tools is playing and I add an instrument or an effect or an insert the sound stops for just moment. It kinda takes you out of the moment. I've seen it not only on my computer but also on other powerful computers. Other sequencers just keep playing without any glitches. I am also sure it's not the drivers or the soundcard. Is there a way to get rid of that? A setting in Pro Tools perhaps?
@theprotoolsgirl8 жыл бұрын

Very helpful presentation, though I already have Logic, but I'm not against the idea of buying Pro Tools...just still a little unsure: especially for $900 Do you have an opinion of preferring Pro Tools over Logic ? I have an iMac, and will be buying a Macbook soon, so that isn't an issue. Any ideas on Compressors ? Does PT have a decent on-board compressor ?
@ju_p90119 жыл бұрын
+Walts Synthlab Walts I have both Logic and Pro tools. It really depends on the person to find out which daw they prefer. Personally for me, Pro tools is a better mixing software because it's very friendly in terms of how you want to mix around clips, hotkeys, general layout of everything etc. the guis and tools just makes sense. But I do find that logic pro x has better sounding virtual instruments out of the box (i think it's because it has better pre processors added to the raw instruments). Now I have pro tools 10 so I can't comment on what instruments pro tools 12 comes with which was why saw this video in the first place, but I think if you have logic pro, you do not need to get pro tools. You can also try out pro tools demo before spending 600 dollars on a new one. Same thing with plugins. logic pro x and pro tools in house plugins can do basic jobs. Most commercial pro producers have expensive hardwares and get bundle plugins for example waves plugins, but i do believe that for people who are starting out the ones that come with the software is good enough. also, i spent a lot of money buying this daw and that daw but i should have tried out demos first. and a lot of people think plugins are the answer to everything but it's really how you record stuff and the quality of the virtual instruments, good board mixing, etc before plugins and mastering. hope this helps.

I'm strictly a Songwriter, melody and lyrics. I don't like to mess with instruments. Is it a plugin that after I lay an acapella it automatically creates a piano track that matches my vocals. Basically I'm trying to produce a beat without without the hassle on focusing on something where my talent is not at
@theprotoolsgirl8 жыл бұрын
If you're committed to being a serious songwriter, you're either going to have to mess with instruments or find someone who does... It doesn't work that way, that you sing a vocal and automatically chords and music parts are created from a plug-in. Sorry for the bad news. But - if you're committed, you should maybe get a co-writer who needs someone to do melody and lyrics... Wish you all the best!

Great lesson! But here's what I think should be made aware to anyone getting into DAW production. Pro Tools was $800 and now is subscription based at $300 annually. EZ Drummer is another $150 to $250 with more needed for expansion packs, etc. So... you see where I'm going with this. Logic Pro X is $199... includes "Drummer", tons of software instruments and effects, loops galore, etc. If you're a songwriter, I honestly don't see any value in Pro Tools in comparison to Logic. Yes, PT is industry standard, blah blah blah but in today's world I think even less so considering all the options we have in DAWs. I also get frustrated in the CPU use of PT compared to Logic. Just an observation!

Small Dog Studio I understand where you are coming from but you didn't specify that you can use protools monthly and try it for 30 dollars a month (need an ilok too another $40.00 - ebay) but id rather be out 70 (1 month trial) than 200 and not like logic x at all. logic x doesn't have a trial. I have PT 12 and logic x. Logic x is more affordable but in the long run PT seems to be the better investment. I believe her ezdrummer suggestion was for people who hate clicks and just need a groove right then and there. There is also battery 4, studio drummer, steven slate drums. Anyone seriously wanting to learn music production and recording might as well learn the industry standard.

Mat Melton I do get that trial thing and wish Apple would consider to do that! Not sure about the “better investment” and “industry standard” though... honestly in today’s world of DAWs, I recommend anyone who asks me to just LEARN all you can about any DAW as they are all very vast. I’m perhaps biased towards Logic as a composer and keyboardist but do see some cool things within PT. Also, I do know of more studios who are geared toward a setup of Universal Audio interfaces and Logic. In the end, I’m sure you’ll agree... music and the performance of it should come first! Rock on!

Small Dog Studio They def do need to implement that. Well I meant industry standard for mixing and even tracking. Yeah each daw has its own pros cons and its really up to the user. Even Bitwig caught my attention for awhile. Yeah I am not really sure why Logic X has advantages over PT for composing and VSTs (havent dug into it). The UAD stuff is great. I just think logic x takes less time to get going as well. Of course I agree my man!!! I was just picking brains too - you have many good points. As a songwriter logic x may fit to be better and quicker to start but to mix down your stuff PT I think takes the cake but pros use cubase too so who knows lol!

Mat Melton Logic for mixing is crazy good! Like serious good! Again... just another cat with different stripes. Biggest thing for me with Logic is the amount of effects ( space designer alone is phenomenal!), software instruments, Drummer (one of the most creative things I’ve seen in a long time) and loops library. I just find that PT seems to leave these out, charge more, and not run as efficient as Logic. I get fed up seeing the system and cpu errors while trying to be creative. But, I also have a friend who swears by Reaper. And you thought the Mac vs.PC thing was bad? Ha!

Small Dog Studio Yeah I guess it all does come down to preference and knowing how to use each piece of software (PT manual is also like 1200 pages ahah). I admit am nowhere near an expert in either but from all the videos, people I know, and my own personal use I swear I think I see PT more - don't get me wrong I see logic X everywhere too. I also think PT is a bit prettier. I loved space designer. I never really got into drummer. I use maschine, superior drummer, battery 4, and studio drummer. LOL oh man the daw is way worse than mac vs pc ahah! To me mac is more stable due to having hardware and software that play nice together. Windows you get more power for your buck in hardware but prone to software errors since everyone in the world can make hardware for windows. PS: Love your studio !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Protools 12 User. Do anyone know how to disable add track in mix window ? when clicking in the mix window or edit window. It adds extra tracks when you just click in the window.
