He is there almost entirely to ask things that would be obvious to veterans but not obvious to noobies. He is the pro tour historian. You must not have watched very many pro tours and heard him ramble off dead accurate placings, decks, players, game results and quotes. Basically data that no one but he has memorized. He has massive insight to the pro community and at this point, his experience in working at protours is irreplaceable since people of his level of experience just don't exist.

Evolve is a trigger with an intervening if clause meaning it checks the power of the creature that entered the battlefield twice, once to trigger the ability, another to check if the power is actually higher. Since tragic slip is -13/-13 the reckoner is a -10/-10 the last moment it is on the field before it dies to state-based effects. So when the trigger resolves, it checks if the reckoner has higher power/tougness. since it is a -10/-10 last time it was on the field, the trigger does nothing.

@GravyBoatable11 жыл бұрын
You're correct in that the evolve trigger wouldn't happen, but not because of those reasons. Basically what happens is the evolve trigger goes on the stack. Martell slips the Reckoner in response, and it gets -13/-13. Since the creature dies, evolve will check last known information as Boros Reckoner as a -10/-10. I believe if you were to terror the Recokner in response, the trigger would still happen since last known information is 3/3 on the creature.
@DrPhr011 жыл бұрын
He's doing it with the evolve trigger on the stack, and because tragic slip reduces power and toughness instead of destroying it, the boros reckoner becomes a -10/-10 before dying. You might have also heard them say that the evolve trigger checks the last known value.

A lot of decks in this Pro Tour run Boros Reckoner, Azorius Charm and Boros Charm. On a turn where Boros Reckoner is taking damage, you can use Azorius Charm to give all your creatures lifelink, and Boros Charm to give make all your creatures indestructible. Due to how Boros Reckoner is worded, you can then have it target itself with its damage effect over and over again, each time gaining X life from lifelink, effectively gaining infinite life.

It's to keep your opponent from memorizing which card is where in your hand. That way if your opponent plays something that lets them discard a card from your hand, they may not hit one of your better cards.
@TumbleDwyer122611 жыл бұрын
The evolve trigger happens. in response, tragic slip brings the 2nd reckoner to -13/-13 As the evolve trigger resolves it checks the power and toughness of the new creature and find that it isn't bigger than the gyre sage. So the evolve fizzles. :)

It's actually really common in advertising and in fiction to pair an expert with a noob. The expert has an excuse to explain, which allows less sophisticated people in the audience to go on a sort of journey in knowledge. Also, the experts in the audience get to enjoy feeling superior.

Burning tree-emissary also adds mana to your mana pool when it comes into play. Also people at a professional level won't play lots of incredibly high cmc creatures like a lot of casual players do. Of course there are exceptions to this. Hope the last one wasn't too obvious.

I think it would have been great if jace and tamio were used together, you can mill yourself and if you altimate tamio you can get all of the cards that you milled when you milled yourself. Then add ons like snapcaster and other cards. No maximum hand size. Keep getting cards then you can counter every thing that the opponent has. Your safe. What do you think? Good combo or what?

I saw rootbound crag, sacred foundry, a normal mountain, and clifftop, so four. He had enough to play both hellriders. The post swing board state is what I would be most interested in, and whether eric expects the blasphemous act. I'm still not sure why he didn't go for the double rider over his own play, it presents a much more aggresive board state.

I may be wrong, but in froelichs position I would have played hellrider mountain, and evolved the gyre sage to play the second hellrider then attacked with both of them. at worst all the reckoners would have been destroyed and it deals 4 off the bat anyway. plus, the next turn with aurelia in play it is insane. That may just be the influence of seeing the other players hand though.

your not wrong, though you might wanna be a little more ambitious, if from that position he swung out he would have dealt 8 direct and present lethal. from there martell would setup blocks, I can't read what martell would do from there perfectly, but he would HAVE to get those hellriders off the field. He would lose at least one reckoner, more likely two, and have the gyre sage or reckoner plus aurelia the following turn. Martell's drop from there would rely on a top deck and even then it's slim

Ben i feel sorry for him when he show the first 3 cards of him lib, and then draw the 4th and 5th, he could had sent thunder on top upkeep draw Sphinx.s Rev for 6, go to 4 and then just take game over one last miss play, i think he lost hes optimism at that point, where a player as his calibre should had being calm and even risk all. Augur some times can be a powerful creature to block and sometimes can just solve all your prob's.
@schmitty126011 жыл бұрын
In game 4, when Martell casts Tragic Slip to stop evolve, evolve would still happen because evolve triggers when the creature enters the battlefield, Martell casts Tragic Slip AFTER the Reckoner enters the battlefield, evolve goes on the stack and happens regardless of what happens to the creature after it enters the battlefield.
