This is my review of Outward, the Canadian Skyrim. It's a pretty good survival RPG.

It reminds me of that comic strip (I apologize for not remembering the name) with two dueling wizards. One wizard casts a spell and misses. The other wizard says, "That's some impressive magic you got there, now let me show you MY magic." *He then proceeds to pull out a pistol*

Game REALLY needs ambient sound. Visually, the world is beautiful but in every game that boasts atmosphere and exploration, it's the sound you hear in the world that elevates it. Rustling of leaves, crashing of waves along the shore, chirping birds, howls in the night, rumbling machinery, etc. I don't know if the engine's limitations is what's holding it back but the world is missing half of its identity.
@PhyreI3ird
@PhyreI3ird 4 жыл бұрын
That's a really interesting point actually! I haven't played this game, but I remember playing Two Worlds (by all accounts, at its _absolute best_ a mediocre rpg) a lot and I think its surprisingly engrossing ambient-noise soundtracks are the main reason I was able to play it for as long as I did. It was that sound track that made the world feel so strangely alive despite the gameplay and other parts of the game not contributing much too it.

Well, there are backpacks that let you roll normally, but it doesn't prevent combat from being clunky. Most skills aren't instant and don't have anything that lets you speed them up, the poise system doesn't make much sense, enemies have unlimited mana/stamina and there's no parry, and blocking doesn't stagger enemies at all.. so combat is pretty much the weakest point of this game imo. Yet, I still really enjoy it..

What I did in my first play: Build lots of HP, no mana, lots of movement speed (because I realised how much walking and running this game is) and went for a trapper melee fighter. Whenever I see dangerous fight I might loose, I'd put a lot of traps on the ground and then when fight go bad, i'd retreat over them and watch enemies get blown up, stabbed, ect. 10/10 times would do this again. But I have to say the electro mage build i done next was very awesome, too! :)

I picked this game up half a year ago with every intention of getting some good time in. I followed it for a bit before it released on PS4. But Alas, working 6 days a week doesnt leave much time for a game like this. I still work 6 days a week but my hours have been pushed to exlusively 9-5's with the current state of things. Found a buddy to play this with every day after work and it's been one of the first games in a long time i think about playing while im at work. It feels like a love letter to gamers that used to love old school RPG's that don't hold your hand like Morrowind. My favourite part is the fact that if you do not listen to what NPC's tell you, you will get lost. I LOVE that there's no player cursor on the map. And i LOVE the limited builds, it gives replayability and you have to give 10 people props for making a game like this. There could defintely be improvements. Combat needs to be crisper, story needs more depth, although the layouts were beautiful, they felt a little empty at times and there definitely needs to be more foliage variety (compare dragon age 1 to DA: Inquisition), more sound FX and more ambience. More voice clips for vendors and NPCs. But this is high demand for such a small group. If you can pick up this game. Do it. The support of these kind of games and studios is worth the money.

@Calvin Schuster i think you missed the game dude. Nor did i say this game was anywhere near morrowind. I just said it didnt hold your hand, like morrowind. Also 54 people made Morrowind under heavy crunch. 10 people made this game over years. This game isn't for everyone, but i for one support games that are clearly products of love.

@@RandomlnternetGuy I really want to play this game, it just reminds me so much of sword art online, it looks like the kind of game you would expect to be a MMO imo, it doesn't look conventional like most RPG's having a defined style /astetic like Skyrim or final fantasy, it's amazing to consider the fact that 10 people built this entire game by themselves and the attention to detail, I haven't any play through's but from the clips I've seen from videos like this, it looks like a world waiting to be explored, hopefully they make and outward 2 judging from what people say there's alot they could improve on in another instalment, this game would actually be a perfect IP for Sony to by for the PS5 with it's tempest engine (dedicated sound hardware), with funding this could be a very good exclusive. Some comments mention paid DLC and how it feels like a money grab and that's one thing I don't like is greedy companies, but maybe there just hating.

Crazy how it took a year to get someone to make a video on the game who seems like they actually played it rather than just using debug mode to give themselves gear and skills to make "build videos" or "Beginner tips" that are just the same handful of things in the starting town. I've got 60hours or so in the game, bought it on launch but other than dicking around and exploring never really felt like I "got it". Playing it again now thanks to the quarantine, your opinions have inspired me to just truck through it and keep exploring and experiencing the game world. It gives me that same sense of wonder Morrowind did as a kid, although I cant help but keep wishing it had some sort of xp progression to make exploring and fighting mobs feel more worth it especially when it's so easy comparatively to make money just sitting in the town making potions and food. Anyway, great review.

The part about them using burning men to boil and purify the water of the swamp is actually a really cool piece of world building. I really love when video games don't hold your hand and give you everything through exposition. I understand why most games do have exposition - but I am so tired of just everything everywhere always being explained. It's like in movies like Big Trouble in Little China - the first third of that movie where you have Jack Burton stumbling around and just being tossed into situations with minimal explanation about the wide scheme at play is arguably the best part of the movie - it allows you to use imagination to really fill in the gaps. Then, when they get to the restaurant and explain everything, the movie kind of takes a dive for me. The same with the sequels for John Wick - John Wick 1 was great! Minimal exposition, just that John Wick is a scary motherfucker coming for vengeance in a world of Assassins. Then the second movie decides to take the time and explain to me everything about the world. I don't need that shit explained - you have an Assassin hotel and there is some sort of giant regulatory body - I don't need the small details given through exposition. I can understand it by piecing the information together. I went a rant but whatever. Maybe I'll make a video about exposition one day. I just want for games and movies to just be able to make something without the need to explain every single thing to me. The imagination is always greater than the reveal - just give me the bare minimum and allow me to do the rest. I mean, just a thing like - circling back - stumbling across the burning men in the facility, without explicitly stating their purpose through exposition, you are able to piece it together. That's what we need because, as you pointed out: video games are a visual medium. Great video though, broski! Keep up the good work!

I’ve decided to put this in a reply instead. In my opinion, Outward is addicting to me. I agree that all of the traveling can be tiresome, especially when you already cleared the region. I haven’t played through every story path, but the story hasn’t been a great sink into me, but some of the misc characters are actually interesting. Like a talking skull that has the power to unlock the room. Now, since I haven’t found a talking skeleton, it was pretty cool. The fetch part was kinda dumb, because the bones aren’t able to be picked up before hand, but I understand since the player character doesn’t know that they are wanted. Traps are interesting to use, but can be so powerful if stacked to completely kill a boss or weaken them a lot. For the Light Mender, I could have been one shot by his shotgun-esk spear swipe, but I got him down to a single hit with tons of traps. I really enjoyed that fight, due to the room, his appearance, and his combat style. Outward, which kinda sucks when you first start, likes to tell you you’re an average Joe. You’re not anything, but must become something. I love that, because most rpgs tell you that you have some special thing. You have 1 choice that’s forced on you, pay the fine or lose your house. I love that, the difficulty being set through the game, and able to be ramped up or decreased with your knowledge and setup. You could even decide you’re skilled enough to beat the game with just fists. It’ll take forever, but it is possible with skill. I have found a bug that sometimes makes you attack, even without your weapon out which has gotten me killed, hopefully it’ll be fixed. But while we’re all stuck inside, I would recommend this. I highly suggest you do, if you have a sibling or someone else to play with in split screen. My sister and I have had a blast, her being a spell caster/ranged unit and me an all round tank with a shield. In the end, I love this game. And it’s not for everyone, it’s for people who likes some dynamic events and challenge that lowers with skill and knowledge.

@@mellowdarkness3344 Personally traveling in this game has a skill ceiling that you need to understand, with proper equipment, potions etc. I can easily travel from Chersonese to the Abrassar desert in around 20 minutes, same with combat I saw that a lot of people compare it to games like dark souls but in Outward there are mostly 2 outcomes when fighting, either you wreck your enemy or the enemy wrecks you, it's all about preparations for the fight not about the actual fight to be simple. You can also try hitting and running but you know how that ends most of the time.

Update from the future: The Soroborean dlc adds an expensive fast travel to the game that does cost a decent amount of rations as well as 200 silver and it's not point and click fast travel, the Soroborean merchant in each town or in each area has a random place they'll be going to, you can either hitch a ride with them to wherever it is they're going or be stuck hoofing it, so it does add an extra layer to the game, it leads to some in depth thought on whether it's faster to take the trip to Monsoon and go to Berg from there or if it's better to just walk through Cheronese etc.

As a huge Outward fan, this is probably the best review I've ever seen. "And then I use my offhand weapon to cast the most powerful spell in the game: Gun." "There's also Chakrams... I don't even know what these do..." "You will be walking more than The Proclaimers" "The Desert is a desert" Also showing off my absolute favorite weapon in the game when mentioning artifact weapons. 21:34 One criticism is that when you were talking about the statues in the desert and the quality of assets, you didn't clip to one of the statues in Levant that have great ASSets...

As a french canadian, I believe I may have your answer regarding seaweed! I know that seaweed is sometimes used in the process of making ice cream (as like, a thickening agent). And I'm pretty sure that this was a popular factoid in quebec at one point, because I have known that random-ass bit of trivia for a long time. Maybe it was a funny bit of trivia that made the rounds sometimes in the 90s after someone mentioned it on TV or something. I would guess one of the devs remembered this and decided that was a good enough rationale to use that item, if it also had the right rarity and spawn location to fit their design for when you should have access to ice damage.

So i asked for a refund i know i regret now. You talk about it and that makes me want to rebuy it >< Also that keyblade with fire is so awesome

Outward is one of the best RPGs I have ever played, it's combat it clunky but you get used to it as long as you stop locking on for melee combat. This game IS the journey, you take long treks coming out with bags filled to the brim and your character hunched over exhausted. This game is hard but rewarding, don't give up after the first few hours.

Holy crap well done. Love the game and appreciate the attention to detail this video displayed. I felt truly genuinely moved. Lol

I started the game by making some money from selling potions and was able to craft 2 obsidian pistols before even leaving the first town.Then I tought I would also test traps and after that not a single enemy has touched me.

Philosopher/rune mage/hunter(or mercenarcy) helped me to make everything this games challenges you to do, and running fucking fast in the process. Bird mask/master trader top/master trader boots for running and using arrows, and then gold lich mask/sage robes/master trader boots to rune the heck out of enemies. Preferably from the elatt faction to easy get cost reduction. The thing i love most from this game is making builds, and even more whit utility being so much needed.

Just so you know, the faction you join actually REALLY matters. You gain passive buffs, weapons/armor sets, and spells. For example, I have a frost based chakram user. He's chakram, monk, and rune caster breakthroughs. He used the frost chakram with icebrand the sword. For that build the Blue Chamber Collective faction is kind of a must. You get armor that seriously buffs your frost damage. Not to mention an extra 25 mana, and 40 hp.

Um. The legacy chest is a great idea. If a game would make this idea of playing a series of characters required to achieve the main quest, it would be really good. Defeating the evil warlock oppressing the world means that one or two characters have to sacrifice themselves, or it just takes a long time to stop part of the evil, or the evil is manifest in different time periods, etc. So long as the game world changed enough to make the flow of time convincing, the replay-ability become simply part of the game itself (ie Zelda: quest one unlocks quest two)

I feel like its worth mentioning that this game was made by a studio of less than 10 people. At times you can tell it was made by a small studio. The love they put into this rpg game definitely makes it worth supporting the small studio. They also just announced DLC to be released this spring with a new area and faction. The developers said the DLC will add another 25% to the whole game. Huge update. Consider supporting this small studio who did a great job at making a classic rpg
