Probing Calibration Mach4 step 1

Is the position of the gauge in the G54 or machine coordinates? Should the gauge be mounted on the machine in general or is it only needed for the calibration and can be removed from the machine table in general use? How often do you need to calibrate, just at the change of a probe tip, etc? Thanks!
