This is a common problem with all newer small engines. My friend repairs these types of engines. I had the problem and brought it to him. He showed me a small round plastic cap that was near the carb. He broke the cap off and under it there was a small screw adjustment. He started the edger and adjusted the screw as he reved the engine. It works fine now. He said its there as some type of pollution control that is preset by the factory. Mine runs perfect now. It

Even though it's obvious that your fuel cap is missing, you may be missing the point as to why it's vital for proper engine function. In this powerhead, It does more than keeping the fuel from spilling. There is a diaphragm pump built into the carb, which uses the fluctuation of intake vacuum to pump the fuel "uphill" to the carb. That pulsation, plus the rapidly varying pressure in the crankcase (due to the rise and fall of the piston altering the effective volume of the crankcase) is what pumps the fuel from the tank to the carburetor. The bottom line is that you need a properly sealed fuel cap for the engine to run properly. Ryobi actually had a design flaw in their early models and if check, the new part number is different than the original. BTW, a complete fuel tank assembly with hoses, fuel filter and gas cap can be ordered for about 20 bucks. I retrofitted mine and the improvement in performance was immediate and significant. Good luck.

I have about 35 years experience working with small engines. My son-in-law purchased one of the $430 X430 Ryobis a couple of years ago and it started doing what all of the ones mentioned in the emails are doing. I went so for as to purchase another carburetor, which was money thrown away. I have never met a challenge like this rascal has caused me. I even found a way to adjust the carburetor, but it makes no difference how you set it. I am retired now, and I may check out some of the things mentioned in the emails below about timing etc. Other wise, the units will make good trot-line wights.

Indeed, I think they were cheaply designed and not well thought out. Plastic camshaft and oil pan...WTF?
@Rynoyes6 жыл бұрын
mine did this today, take the cap off, spray into the carb with carb cleaner very liberally, wait 2 mins for it to dry out and what ever is blocking the carburetor causing it to shrink and it will hopefully unclog the carb. I had blisters trying to get mine too start and then talked to my brother who works at a home depot and told me to try this. It worked the rest of the day with no problems. I think it started because I ran out of gas and something at the bottom of the gas tank was sucked into the carb.

I just purchased (July 2013) a RY34446 (S430 I believe it is according to the manual front cover) although S430 is not marked on it. Seeing the concerns about the S430 and plastic camshaft, I contacted Ryobi support and they assured me (in writing) that the S430 models have a metal camshaft. I have not inspected it close enough to confirm, and I suppose I would need to pull a head cover to do this, but based on my s/n and unit MFG date of 03-15-13, they confirmed that it has a metal cam.

2 differently engineered models? I picked up a reconditioned S430 last week for a bargain price of 50% off. Worked great! Picked up another one for the cottage. This one displayed all the problems mentioned. I visually compared the good one to the bad one and noticed that the primer-bulb on the good one is on the back of the machine and has a 3-setting choke. The bad one has the primer-bulb on the top, and has 2 settings for the choke. Returned it and got one like the good one. Runs great!
@TheNukey213 жыл бұрын
I bought an S430 that had this problem. It was caused by the drip style oil mixing. This can be inspected by removing the black plastic cover on the power head. Remove it and look at the thin black hose that drips oil into the air intake screen. If that little oil drip hose slips out of it's retainer notch then your drip misses the screen and the result is what you see. That's why it got thrown in the trash. You can fix it easily. I took mine down to Home Depot and they replaced it.

This unit is known for leaking oil from both the crankcase and the oil pan gasket. This leaking can cause the unit to lose compression and therefore cause the unit not to throttle up. Also check oil level as this unit takes 0W50 oil.

I am on my second one of these things. the first one was spitting oil and giving out a lot of white smoke on the first use and i learned that the head gasket was defective. I got a second one under warranty and it worked perfectly for about two months. when i started it yesterday it immediately began giving out white smoke but it wasnt spitting oil. it revs and idles. these things are cool because they are four stroke and they sound cool too. but i might have to go back to a reliable two stroke.
@TheSblackwater12 жыл бұрын
Once you have that set both the H an L needles at 1 1/2 turns out. Set the low needle, closest to the engine (look closely they are marked on the carb housing). Set the L by turning it in clock wise until the engine speeds up, then back off a1/4 turn. Note the position. Now turn it out counter clock wise until it slows way down. Turn it in a 1/4 turn. Note the position and split the difference. Now go to full throttle and turn the H needle clock wise until it speeds way up.

If you take off the cover for the air cleaner ( this is the black cover around the choke lever) you will find 2 screws in a metal housing. they look like metal posts with a small v cut out. on the casinh there is a h over the one on the right. it takes a special tool to adjust the screw. I took mine to a small engine shop and the adjusted it for free. It just needs to be leaned out a little then it will work fine. you could do it your self by useing a dremmel to cut a slot in the screw.

I have read enough about the Ryobi. I bought S430 Sat, 12 May 2012. I brought it home, filled it with the oil provided in the box (oil in box is not recommended oil for use on the unit 10/30 vs 20/50 if my memory serves me) I used it one time for an hour or so. Now Oil is leaking out of motor. It does not start very easy. Billows smoke when it runs and chokes if you give it too much gas. I am taking it back to HD tomorrow for a refund. I have owed 3 (including this one), but am giving up.

I know this is an old post, but I have the same trimmer. Same issues as you do until I clean the carb yet again. The main problem other then the cheap primer bulb is the stupid oil drip line. Mine drips way too much oil out of it and gunks up the carb after each use. I have not found a solution to the problem, but maybe someone else has an idea. I thought about trying to put a small filter on the drip line to hold some oil back, but i know its just gonna get clogged real fast.

I too have experienced the same problem, but I've been able to 'tease' the throttle a bit to get through the stall. Non the less, it does stall often on a cold start. Another problem I've encountered is the priming bulb rotted away. I was able to replace it at HD though. All in all its been a decent machine. I wouldn't recommend it for landscape maintainers using it daily. It's not up to that quality. It's an affordable tool for home use with the benefits of being 4 stroke, and attachments.

Probably has too much oil in it, that happens a lot. Did you buy yours new? If so, how many of the included oil bottles did you add to it right out of the box?
@TheNukey213 жыл бұрын
Here's an addendum to my post. The smoke is due to the fact that your oil dripping hose is missing the air intake and dripping oil onto the power head. It's been a year since you posted this video so I assume you probaly also threw it in the trash. Too bad. It's an easy fix. You just clip the little black oil hose back where it belongs. When it comes out of the retaining clip it moves just enough to miss the air intake screen.

I've worked on small engines for years, and for all the name and reputation Ryobi has, the timing belt was a serious brain fart. The bearing that supports the pulley end of the cam shaft wears and the belt begins to jump time. Take the shrouds off, use a screwdriver to gently pry up on the timing pulley. If there is one sixteenth of an inch of movement, time to send it in for recycling and buy a new one. Otherwise you'll find yourself resetting the timing every five minutes or so. No, a new belt will not fix it. I've tried that. Maybe a spring-loaded tension pulley. In fact, the timing belt will probably outlast every other moving part. But when you send it down the road (to the scrap heap), salvage the carburetor. I've found that it does a very good job on a Craftsman or Troybilt 4-stroke. But get one with push-rods. They last much longer than the belt.

The bulb is visible in the video, on the top of the engine.

yea the new X430 is good, just do NOT over fill it with oil… just use the oil that comes with the unit and NO MORE… if you overfill it, the oil WILL bleed thru the piston oil rings and then you will start to get white smoke and oil will shoot out the carburetor… This is a major problem with these units when people assume that the included oil is not enough so they pour more in… then u have problems, this is a common mistake people do according to the lawnmower repair shops here…

Release the throttle and back out a 1/4 turn. Go full throttle again and back the needle out until it slows way up. Close the needle 1/4 turn. Again split the difference. Repeat this procedure as the 2 needles interact. Once you get it set up the engine should idle low enough to not turn the head and transition from idle to full throttle and any thing in between.

In the first place the Ryobi S430 pressurizes the tank. That's not going to happen without the cap on the tank. Second the S430 has the high and low needles set to pass emissions testing and is running too lean. In order to set the carb you'll need a "Pac Man" tool. Available on Ebay from $10 to $20. The needles are marked L and H on the carb body.
@FLHTdriver7 жыл бұрын
Just a thought, but don't think I am trying to be a smartazz, you have to have a gas cap that's in good shape and seals good. The tank has to be able to hold a small amount of pressure for this motor to operate correctly. Also if you're over 2000' the carburetor needs to be leaned out to run correctly, there is a kit for this or you can adjust the carburetor while running. Brand new these are ALL out of tune. Take your time adjusting the Carb at high and low speeds. I can see why this was in the trash but trust me they run great after tuning.

You are absolutely correct. There is a diaphragm pump built into the carb. That, plus the rapidly varying pressure in the crankcase (due to the rise and fall of the piston constantly altering the effective volume of the crankcase) is what pumps the fuel up, for the fuel tank to the carb. The bottom line is that you need a properly sealed fuel cap for the engine to run properly.

@SpeakerPolice its made by ruixing, but the carb diaphrams, primer bulb is identical to a zama carburetor, the rebuild kit rb-29 is suppost to have the primer bulb according to zama but they don't, but i have the part number for the primer bulb from zama (0057004=$ 1.72 / ea.) and this is the stens cross reference number that you can go by, same exact primer bulb,(615-792 its should be the same price but its listed at stens for a 5 pack for 4 bucks) ...................

I have read yours and others reviews on homedepo's site and have refrained from buying this model . i think its sad that ryobi has resorted to make such product which cannot preform its intended function.
