These particular scythe handles and blades are not normally for sale in the UK, but a few complete set-ups came up for sale and I took the opportunity to have a look. Tubular steel handles are a low-cost option over wooden ones but, if used correctly and within their capabilities, they can work well enough.
These scythes were sold complete but maybe it's the wrong choice of blade for the handle. Perhaps I'm wrong and I should be holding it differently, but I don't think so.
If you look at the handles available in the Netherlands (for example at this website: www.kooijmanss...
), the two tubular steel handles have a common low approach angle to the ground, whereas the wooden version (traditional Dutch?) has a steeper approach, requiring a different 'set' on the tang of the blade.
But there is also the issue of work needing to be done to get the tang to sit flat against the stem, otherwise the blade is unstable - issues the manufacturers should address as it is unfit for purpose as it is. Other than that, the handle is a good, fully adjustable design.
I'm not sure why these scythes came with a 'catcher' (cradle) - perhaps for a specific crop? - I've yet to test it. The holes drilled in the blade for its attachment won't do any harm. The blade is the one I peen in another video.
The alternative blade I put on it is also an Austrian 'Zwei Rinder' (65cm), but I don't know the model.
About 6 other folk also bought these scythes; I hope this input is of use to them, if they're having problems.
(The blades can also be seen at the same website as above:
www.kooijmanss...)
