The thing with Kesha is Taylor is damned if she did and damned if you don't. If she publicly said, "here Kesha, take my money!" people would criticize her for trying to draw attention to herself. If she doesn't say anything, she gets "called out" for not "standing up". I think she did the right thing by trying to help Kesha but still not trying to make a big deal about herself.

She could have said something without talking about money. A lot of artists publicly spoke out about the Kesha issue. Taylor didn't speak about it other than a statement about the money.

But wasn't it Kesha's mom who let the world know by publicly tweeting about thanking Taylor for donating the money? After that Taylor's PR confirmed it, IIRC.

+TheFrostbite324 My main two: She writes a song about how being a little chubby is ok. Isn't fat in the slightest. She's actually gotten THINNER since then. She says her song "All About that Bass" isn't skinny-shaming. Has lines like "go and tell them SKINNY BITCHES that."
@mattvillegas3789
@mattvillegas3789 8 жыл бұрын
+Afro'd Avenger Music Reviews Oh here we go again... That line was meant to be playful, not malicious. (People do use the word "bitch" playfully sometimes, believe it or not.) In the next breath, she says "Nah, I'm just playing, I know ya'll think you're fat..." and proceeds with telling them that they're perfect the way they are as well. She acknowledges that even skinny people have insecurites about their weight. (Does it completely gloss over eating disorders? Perhaps, but you shouldn't expect a single song to be all-encompassing of everyone's feelings. That's almost impossible.) I don't even like Meghan or the song, but I'm tired of people being so sensitive and taking it the wrong way. That being said, I loathe the message of Dear Future Husband.

Matt Villegas But, by the same logic you just used, "Dear Future Husband" is the exact same way. I don't like the song or its message, either, but she could also be playfully saying that these are the things she wants in a relationship if it were all up to her, and unfortunately, there are a lot of women (young girls, mostly) who empathize with her.

Helena Draper I know, and I shouldn't really say that what she's doing is wrong. She's living her life as a successful artist and living her dream, and I suspect that she's very happy. It's just that to listeners and fans alike, her drastic changes have changed the artist/person we thought we knew, and it seems as though she's doing it for publicity. She definitely wasn't like this even a couple years ago. And now, all of a sudden, she's a diva. Literally out of nowhere.

I get confused at people getting mad at Taylor for Spotify and trademarks because many other artists (e.g: Adele, Jason Aldean) don't stream on Spotify to boost album sales and other artists (e.g: Kanye West, who has many more than Taylor) have trademarked tons more phrases than Taylor. I just don't get why only Taylor is attacked for it.

I totally agree with you! It's also like how everyone gets down on her and shames her for writing music about her exes and love life. Her songs are amazing and you can feel the emotion behind them, and frankly it's also sexist. Nobody says that crap about male artists; Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran write tons of songs about their love lives but apparently nobody has problems with that... She is just such a good person all around (and you know she doesn't get involved in drugs or sex scandals) that critics have to look for the smallest and pettiest things to attack her about.

Even though I'm a die hard 5sos I agree with you. It honestly annoyed me how much their song "Rejects" sounded a lot like "My worse enemy" Luke has a great voice in my opinion and so does Ashton and Calum, I think Michael is a good singer but he could do better. And lyrically some of their songs aren't as strong as they could be. Their first album made them sound like a bunch of horny teenage boys which they were, and honestly I feel like their first album felt more real then their 2nd because at least it showed more of who they were at the time, their second album is basically them trying so hard to write about more serious issues but they failed, don't get me wrong Sounds Good Feels Good does have some good tracks like Outer Space/ Carry On, San Francisco, and Waste The Night but it's like songs like Broken Home that bother because they could of done better. The songs in SGFG are also quite repetitive and Broken Home and Invisible aren't lyrically that good.

I know the whole "social justice" schtick is extremely played out, but can we talk about how much she misuses feminism? In the past few years, Taylor has suddenly become an extremely outspoken feminist; though that in and of itself isn't a bad thing, the timing and the situations in which she talks about it are kinda suspicious. TS only seems to bring up feminism whenever she's defending the amount of boyfriends she's had, or whenever she's criticized by a fellow female celebrity; we've never heard her speak about feminism when it doesn't benefit her personally. Also, the start of her "feminist activism" coincidentally began around the same time as her promotion for the 1989 era... Her newest album has a more polished, sophisticated vibe, and what better way to emphasize that than with a complete image overhaul centered around an political movement that is currently at its peak? I'm not saying Taylor Swift is fake. Her songs comes from the heart, and that's why listening to her music is such a joyful experience. But, just as was said in the video, it's clear that Taylor's new image requires her to eschew her roots in favor of what's currently "in."

she said she was taught feminism by Lena Durham, honestly what was anybody expecting? and her whole white feminism piss me off, and I agree with the whole it came out the same time 1989 did, it looks like every time she releases an album she changes herself just to fit the album and when she puts out another she changes herself again, the ways she talk who she hangs with and the way she dress herself are completely different every time she releases something and I find that really fake.

@rosealina2468
@rosealina2468 8 жыл бұрын
+sweetbigbrowneyes no it's not. Apple is a brand name, the name of a company. Does she have a reason to trademark a year? No. It's not like she's starting a business named 1989. She just wanted to because?? She was born then? I dunno. She seems to think she's so important that even her birth year belongs to her and no one else.
@sweetbigbrowneyes
@sweetbigbrowneyes 8 жыл бұрын
You can't trademark a year. She trademarked merchandise. You can't sell shirts with '1989' on it written in similar fonts to what she used in her album. Basically she made sure nobody was selling fake merchandise. Plus an album is a business. You may not know this but most song titles and lyrics and album titles are trademarked. Just like slogans. Did you know you can't write 'Just Do It' on a shirt or else Nike could sue you?
@rosealina2468
@rosealina2468 8 жыл бұрын
+sweetbigbrowneyes there's no point to do that though. What if someone was born that year and wanted that on their shirt? How is that fair to everyone else? Plus there are plenty of songs with the same title to them but no one sues them for that. I can name three bands off the top of my head who have a song called Hurricane. It's just stupid that she did that and she clearly thinks she's better than most people. Plus this conversation is pointless.
@sweetbigbrowneyes
@sweetbigbrowneyes 8 жыл бұрын
But what you are saying it's not true. You can have a t-shirt with 1989 written on it as long as you don't sell it and the font is not hers. 'taste the feeling', 'Get the London look', 'I'm loving it', 'But first coffee' those are all trademarked. You can't have a t-shirt that says 'I'm loving it', but everybody is pissed because you can't have 'That Sick Beat'? With this conversation I'm just trying to tell you that is crazy to be pissed as something that every brand (and yes, Taylor Swift is a brand) does on the daily basis just because someone wrote an article on it.

I hate how she feels the need to trademark the most basic of things
@sweetbigbrowneyes
@sweetbigbrowneyes 8 жыл бұрын
I feel you and I really want to contribute to the conversation. - On Apple Music: there's definitely something sketchy about it. When she first put out the open letter I thought 'Ok', because she did have a point: if you work, it is ok to be paid for it, although I wish she said she wanted to protect other people working on her music (obviously the money from a song don't go only to the artist who puts a name on it) rather than putting on this hardly believable Robin Hood hat. What's really weird though is that she's now working for Apple music. She's filming ads for them and not only it is the only streaming service to have her album, she has her movie on it and premiered her music video on it. Now it just looks like a pretty smart marketing move. If you think about it, that open letter brought attention not only to taylor, but also on a streaming service that was having a hard time imposing itself on already existing - and better - services like Spotify. But then Apple listened to her, so look at them! They are so good and they actually listen to artist! I'm pretty sure they signed a contract way before the open letter was released. - On her social life: Taylor is a pretty damn smart businesswoman, and the most important thing in business is 'who do you know'. She's friendly and she doesn't beef, and if she does, the next day they're best friends (look at the Nicki Minaj thing). This opens a lot of doors for her though, not only fandom wise, but also with brands and such. Some people may not agree, but she's very not problematic as an artist and this is something brands appreciate and strive for. But that's not it. Think about Bad Blood and her win at the VMA. It is a people choice award and the video that she decided to release in time to be nominated was the one in which there were hundreds of celebrity, each with a big fanbase attached. Who do you think Zendaya's, Gigi's or Selena's fans voted for? But again, that's just a very smart business move. I am actually studying business and I find that very interesting. I remember Tyler Oakley once said he studied the way Taylor promoted 1989 because it was such good marketing. So yeah, she is good at business, is this really a bad thing? Her persona is her brand and she's doing all the things you should do to make a brand successful: she's coherent but also innovative, she listens to the public opinion etc etc. Finally it is also true that this girl just can't win. When she was dating everybody was pissed at her because she was only doing that, now the problem is that she has too many friends friends. She definitely has some real friends, like her high school bestie Abigail or that girl she's just been a bridesmaid for. She had real people friends all along and nobody was caring, so she now put in some celeb friends. Plus you hear some interviews from some of them and it is really hard to think that is all a facade, I mean, her and Selena have been going on about being friends since they were like 16, Ed Sheeran got a tatto for Taylor, she went on a road trip with Karlie Kloss, wrote a freaking song for Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff. She's probably not such a awful person to be around then. Does she plays it up for the media? Of course. But she's a celebrity, that's what she does and it's not that different from a 'What's good?' or a 'Million Dollars in a Elevator'. - On copyright: she got so much shit for this and it's not fair. You can't just copyright a word, you need to copyright it with a certain font for a certain use. For example Apple has copyrighted the word 'Apple', but you still can call a apple with its name or create a clothing line with that name. Can you create a phone brand with that name? Definitely not. That's the same. She copyrighted those phrases to not be written on t-shirts or bags with her fonts used so there couldn't be fake merchandise. And as a proof there's a pretty famous artist who released an album around a year after Taylor and called with his year of birth. Plus everybody copyrights their things: I'm pretty sure you can't even release an album called 'Purpose' in 2019. She does seem very protective and paranoid though, for example I remember she was worried somebody was gonna steal her album so she was checking for microphones before letting her friends listen to it. But then again leaks happen. Plus she made a bunch of her fan listen to 1989 before it was released so there are definitely more layers to that. - On charity work: this was the point I didn't agree with you. Yes, for what we know she only helps 'famous' causes, but we know what the media tells us so what's the point. Plus she can't just scroll the internet all day to search for people in need, so it's not that weird that she helps only people that, by likes and what not, are brought to her attention. Also she is probably the most generous star towards her fans. Yes, it is always good publicity but all she did with the secret sessions and the Swiftmas etc was just really nice. And the Valentine's / Christmas thing wasn't even that covered by the media. Her meet and greet are free and just depends on the enthusiasm somebody puts in being her fan, so it's not very fair calling her money hungry or stuff like that when we live in a world in which some artists cash thousands for a picture. As a fan I'm definitely happier if the extra money she gets comes from giants like Apple than from me. Finally, talking about Kesha, yes, she gave her money. And she gave it to her anonymously, that's why Demi called her out. Taylor was outed by Kesha's mom and Demi was pissed because Taylor didn't openly say 'I stand with Kesha'. But then again, if she did, we would be here talking about how she does everything for publicity. You can't really win in the public eye. Plus, I think that Kesha, who has to pay all her legal bills and could end up not working for 5-10 years could really use the money, even more than some kind words.This is the real world, and money counts. And let's not talk about how Demi was all saying she couldn't afford to give Kesha some money when it's pretty clear she's not exactly broke. Anyway, those were my points of view. You just made some very interesting remarks I had to partecipate! Hope this wasn't to long ... Keep it up with the good videos!

I completely get that this is your opinion and I'm not trying to prouve you wrong or anything, I just want to put some of the things you said into perspective. (Oh and if anyone in this world ever happens to actually read this long (LONG) ass comment, I'm French so please excuse the wierd phrasings !) 1) About her social media appearance First of all, she has stated many times that interracting with her fans on social media is what keeps her grounded. Her life is completely abnormal, she never denied it, so acting on social media like many teenagers and young women is helping her to deal with fame. I agree that she sometimes tries to normalize her life a bit too much, but this is for her own sanity so I wouldn't blame her for that. Before her first album was out, she was really into myspace and already interracting with people on the internet. But around 2010-2012 she kinda had to shut herself from the internet because the hate and the fake rumors and the slutshaming were unbearable. But she was still miserable, and she decided to get out there and interract with her fans on Tumblr, creating memes together and comforting teenage fans going through a hard time. Which makes her and a lot of fans really happy, so just, ignore it maybe if it annoys you. Another reason why she is quite active on social media and posting a lot of pictures with her friends is to take her revenge on paparazzis. Her life is beeing watched 24/7, everytime she leave her house she knows there are going to be dozens of paparazzis waiting for her. She has literally no privacy outside private houses. It's interesting that you chose to illustrate this part of your video with the picture of her vacation with Haim. She had never planned on putting those pictures on social media, but she realized half-way through her trip when she was in the middle of the ocean that people were taking shots of her. She was really mad at the paparazzis for invading her privacy when she clearly wanted to not have to worry about it, so she decided to post pictures herself so that the paparazzis' shots become worthless. She knows they are going to be pictures of everything she does no matter what, so she might aswell be in control of her image. 2) About donations You say that she only seems to care about things that are in the spotlight. But her WHOLE LIFE is constantly in the spotlight, as I already said it she is followed wherever she goes and Teen Vogue makes an article about her everytime she changes nailpolish. So yeah, everything she does is instantly put in the spotlight, and so are her charity work. Also, there are millions of people who dream to meet her and talk about it on social media. But when that person is a sick child, her fanbase try to pass the information to make it big enough so that Taylor hears about it. How else do you want her to know that ? About Ke$ha, I understand your point of view. But when it happened I took it more as a personnal gesture from one woman to another. Like "I don't really know you and we don't have much in common, but if one women in the music industry is hurting because of rape culture and male supremacy then all women in the music industry are affected (including Taylor, the most influential and successful woman at the moment) so here's some of my personnal money to help you." I though that treating this like a personnal thing and not a general public thing was sending a very powerful message about sisterhood. 3) About Apple Why do you all get so suspicious about her genuinely wanting to defend smaller artists ? She has always defended her opinion on copyright, whether you agree with her or not (which I don't really) so I don't see why you guys are acting like it's so wierd. Also lots of her friends are smaller artists, so even though she is extremely succesful and won't be harmed by Apple not paying her for three months, wanting to use her visibility to support them doesn't seem all that suspicious to me. Plus she is a business woman, and she is probably one of the few artists today who can do whatever the hell they want to do because she's in charge of the economical part and the artistic part of her carreer. If being "so greedy" enables her complete artistic freedom while being the most generous celebrity for the last four years, that's pretty cool. 4) About her change in style and music Her physical appearance and art have evolved between her 16 years old and her 26 years old. Wow. I mean, how dares she ?? WHO EVEN DOES THAT ??? 5) About falseness, friends and insecurity For one thing, she overthinks a lot. Because she is a natural worrier, because everything she does is being criticized and analyzed by everyone, and because she is well aware of everything being said about her. It's hard for her to handle it, even though she tries no to care, but you can tell she tries to be prepared all the time, hence the supposed falseness. About the "omg look at all my bffs" thing, she said that one of the reasons why her friendships were so important to her is that she was quite bullied in middle school and thus lonely. She is indeed compensating from that lack of friends in her life. She is also in that wierd position where she has insecurities and she admits it because she wants her fans to know that even that person they look up to is scared and worried about the same things they are. But at the same time she must show a confident face to the world for all of the hate she gets. And now I'm going to stop procrastinating and go finish the essay for my exam.

I understand that these are your opinions and how you see things but... She took that picture with her homegirls because she was out whale watching and having fun when a photographer or paparazzi took pictures of them. So they decided to take better ones for themselves so that the people taking pictures of them wont make as much money for their pictures. She has always been very generous with donations. She has donated to hospitals, schools, and a lot more places. Like flood victims and places that help feed the poor. I dont think it's cool for people to judge her by that since she out doing good. She never publicizes anything. Pictures that are taken or video recorded of her at hospitals are by the patients family. And Kesha's mom was the one who thanked her on twitter for the money and it is why it got out. There's nothing wrong with a person having a lot of friends. She kicks it with them on a daily basis and people think it's staged or some shit. She's very happy with her life so she out having fun and then she gets hate because she haves "too much fun." She never claimed that everyone single friend on staged with her was her "best friend.'' She kindly thanks them on instagram or twitter. When you grow up doing what you love and make a living out of it, I'm sure anyone would be as happy as her. And she's kind enough to personally make gifts for her fans and meet them. I do get that she didnt put her music out there on Spotify or Apple because she wasnt getting paid for it and that made it seem like if she was greedy. But Adele decided to do the same and she got 0 criticism for it. Regardless, it is money that is being taken away from you and it is companies benefiting of your money. I dont know if she really stood up for the new artist but I know for sure she didnt put her music on there so that she can make her money. And i agree with you on that trademark bullshit. It's dumb, maybe not "party like it's 1989" but the rest i can understand that it's dumb.

Taylor Swift: breathes This guy: I think her breathing was a little too loud. And something about it seems really fake. It's pretentious because women don't breathe that loud and as a man I take offence to that because it's sexist. And she does everything like a normal human being which to me is pretty annoying at this point. But hey! That's just my opinion. I have to create problems out of nowhere like how could she donate 1m dollars without even mentioning it? Because had it not been for her, Demi and I would have definitely helped Kesha with our encouraging words and probably a little money our broke ass could afford to donate, but unlike her we'd make sure we'd do it with full advertisements and promotions. Because that is what matters more than helping Kesha. But you know what I'm a Taylor Swift fan but I'm tired of seeing her all so nice and successful even after all these years. That should bother everyone.

There's also the fact that she's a massive hypocrite. She makes a stand about her music being "art," removes herself from these streaming services, apparently for the good of smaller artists, because she believes their art should be paid for. And, while that may be true, she's the same girl that sued her old guitar teacher for saying on his website that he taught Taylor Swift to play guitar AND she used a woman's drawing of a fox without permission, and when this lady asked for some credit, Taylor and her team denied it. She can pretend she's all about the welfare of other artists all she likes, but I can see right through it.

I'm not talking about her songs.. I realize Red was transition. It was pretty obvious even before 1989 came out, but my fall out with her has to do with how she represent herself. Trademark her song, don't put it on streaming (if you do really care about your fan and that they are you number 1whatever, you would put it not only on Spotify, but also on youtube.. Yes the full album! Demi did it. There are fans who can't afford the album but would still want to support her, but her greed is just... no... Taylor has enough money to for who know how many life time), etc. I do like some of her song on 1989, but I couldn't get over Bad Blood. @sweetbigbrowneyes
@sweetbigbrowneyes 8 жыл бұрын
+Stephen Zumpano Ok so basically Apple music didn't pay their artists during the trial period, which means that for three months your music is streamed for free. After that open letter they changed their mind and decided to pay artists even during the trial. I think the problem with Spotify is that, whereas you can access Apple music only paying, Spotify has a free version of it. I don't actually know how much artists are paid during if they are streamed on the free version, which by the way is the most popular and lucrative for Spotify, but the problem for Taylor Swift was that people were getting music for free. It wasn't so much about how much she was making, it was that that suggested that music is not something that is worth paying for. Like you wouldn't dream about having a free version of Netflix (aside from the trial) in which you can see tv shows for free but they're like shuffled or something, because we are willing to pay money for tv shows and movies, but we aren't as much for music.

@feraflauna3238 6 жыл бұрын
+Jo ce-You can argue back even back in her younger years, she lived a very secluded, very insulated, and privileged life-the only problems she seemed to have existed with a boy she liked that preferred the cheerleader over a girl who "wore sneakers," things like that, regular teenage "fluff" stuff from an inexperienced, naive little girl still trying to figure out the world and figure out who she was as an artist. She always had the talent to be an artist, her best gift for songwriting happened to be her point-blank honesty and it felt ripped from her diary as she goes through her teenage life and that was a breath of fresh air at the time. She at least wasn't trying to be anything than what she was, even if she did turn out to be a pampered and privileged little girl. Her songs were honest but they were also wish fulfillment, it was never really, truly raw and it never really made an impact, definitely not even the way Lorde debuted and I don't think she was ever interested in making something truly raw. All that privilege and pampering I guess makes it unsurprising that she warped from an innocent, pampered but still sweet teenager into a spiteful, vindictive, narcissistic adult who believes the world owes her and everyone is somehow "out to get her." An insecure, immature snot who stamps her feet and cries when she even gets a papercut and spends her time and energy trying to bully and destroy all her enemies into submission. Truly a despicable person.

The thing I agree with you on this video is the Apple Music PR stunt. Apart from that I disagree. I just think Taylor has lots of great friends and is taking photos of herself with them and posts them online, just like millions of other people do in life. I don't believe it's her showing off. No matter what Taylor does there will always be a devils advocate to it and people find a way to twist it to make it seem like she's doing something sly when in fact she might actually just be enjoying herself and genuinely want to do good things for people. It's certain people that put her on a pedestal so view her actions as being attention seeking and doing it all for that PR stunt and money. If you just look at it from a different perspective it's a whole other story.

In her country days, Taylor was the girl who wrote about boys and put heart into her songs. She deserved those Grammys. However, her newer music is awful to me. I'd consider myself to be a pretty big fan of Taylor but as I'm aging and maturing what I've noticed is the false sense of "normal" she puts out to the world. I don't think she does this on purpose, but it's been as of late it's gotten more significant. I believe she's genuine and a lovely person - but her image that she's putting out is more polished normal with shades of being genuine. From the excessive amounts of friends, to the polished stage and social media presence (which I can think of on numerous occasions of interviews from Ryan Tedder, Ellie Goulding, etc that she's not exactly polished) that young girls just inhale and absorb, it just rubs me the wrong way. I think her intent is filled with good intentions, positive role model perhaps? But I'd rather see people show that side of who they really are, rather than bits and pieces that may protect yourself from controversy. That's why people such as Demi and Ed are admirable in that perspective.
