@MrKotBonifacy Жыл бұрын
@@BoggWeasel As far as I can see, nowhere... : ) There's this interesting take on the issue of "early work safety standards" (or rather lack of thereof) by Keith Rucker from Vintage Machinery - you can listen to him here, if you want to: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHeyqKtslJmAa8k In fact, too much reliance on "safety guards" and all "safety stuff" produces sort of complacency, and that could be dangerous too - for instance, I have three mitre saws, and for a time one of them had its blade guard removed, and few years back I cut the tendon of my right thumb on one of those (not a pretty sight...). Guess which of them it was, and why NOT the one WITHOUT the guard... And at any rate this woodworkers' "shrinking of fingers" seems to be a pretty common "occupational affliction" - here is a German woodworking craftsman, OSHA and all (hey, it's Germany!), and look at his left hand - the "greeting" and ring fingers seem to be tad shorter, don't they? kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3-5dYZ_g89sopI "Cut happens" as they say... And then there is this cabinet maker in US who one day just after entering his workshop stood next to a spinning table saw, and while there he sneezed hard (wood dust makes you sneeze), and somehow his right hand landed on the saw table, right on the undercutting blade (which is used for underscoring chipboards prior to being cut, so there's no chipping on the underside), and the undercut blade pushed his hand right onto the main blade, and... Yep. Now all his right hand fingers are just as long as pinky. If you want to see his predicament I can dig the link (he used to have his channel on YT too).
@BoggWeasel Жыл бұрын
@@MrKotBonifacy I had a woodwork teacher in school back in the day, (don't know if that's part of the curriculum anymore?) anyways, he would demonstrate the correct method of usage and how to use each hand tool, chisel, saw, plane etc. No power tools at all..If any boy cut himself, he would bend them over the workbench and give the half a dozen good whacks on the bum with flat of an oversized T square because they obviously weren't listening or paying attention. His point of view was." if you're using a tool correctly and are aware of the dangers, a good carpenter never cuts himself.". It only needed to happen once, and it sounded much more spectacular and painful than it sounds or was, still, no one cut themselves after that.😁. As to OSHA. merely pointing out the "civil service oversight" prominent in the workplace these days as a lot of the rules cater to the lowest common denominator, that all people who work in factories or any kind of manual work aren't too bright. I've worked building sites, done demolition, and there are some scary operators out there with minimal safety standards or none at all, but you don't say anything if you want your paycheck.
@MrKotBonifacy Жыл бұрын
@@BoggWeasel Good story about them good ole ways of "getting pupils attention" ;-) A good smack is sometimes worth more than a hourly lecture, and while I do not condone whipping, flaying or other serious corporal punishment, a timely delivered slap might be more beneficial then hourly lecture - while hardly harmful. (Except for them snowflakes perhaps, who'd get emotional breakdown just at the very thought of someone violating their safe space, but I digress here.) Anyway, I totally agree at the "dumbing down" aka "lowest common denominator" approach to the issue and resulting superfluous regulations and warnings ("may contain nuts" on packets with peanuts inside) - people no longer use their common sense and instead blindly rely on "procedures" and "regulations". There's this "Periodic videos" channel on YT, about chemistry, and you'd thought that University people in UK "would know better", but no. You can see there a lass opening can of beer while wearing her specs AND safety goggles ON TOP of those (kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZnId39uqMqYaZI , "cuz we're in lab!") - or another one trying to produce few shavings of barium in SEALED CHAMBER (even though barium is just mildly toxic, and not volatile at all, kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6TVe5eHipiBhdE) - but then you can watch PROFESSOR and TECHNICIAN playing with red-hot charcoal and a bowl of liquid oxygen on a WOODEN FLOOR! And then - a cherry on top! - that technician pours out the remaining LOX RIGHT ONTO THE FLOOR - kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2jYdHWNoNd0jtE Jesus Christ full of mercy... But no procedure violated, right? Erm... you said what? Bondarenko? Bondarenko who...? THIS Bondarenko, Valentin Bondarenko you muppets: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentin_Bondarenko#Death What a way to go, innit? Beam me up, Scotty...
