Thanks for the tutorial. I really liked the star reduction in GIMP. I had not seen that before and will definitely start using that! I would personally never drag the black point so close to the left edge of the data. GIMP is very finnicky when it comes to clipping. If you look carefully at the histogram in the video, you will notice you were in fact already clipping data. It also introduces background noise sometimes. I would steer well clear of the left edge of the peak.

Aaand here we are 1 year later. After 3 years with a Manfrotto tripod (1 pod per year) I finally got an unguided mount right now: a very humble, second hand EQ5 GO-TO mount. I've always snobbed the Rosetta Nebula becouse I can't see anything on my D300 screen even after 120 seconds. Can I catch her with 2 minutes sub exposure and 3 hours of total integration (spread just before and after the meridian flip on a bortle 4 nightsky)? I mean even the Horse Head Nebula gently appears on the camera's screen after 2 minutes but Rosetta no way. Salute from Italyy.

thanks for this excellent video. very clear. Are you able to give tips on how in Gimp to emphasise stars when taking images of constellations? When taking DSLR images of constellations, the bright stars do not stand out because the sensitive camera picks up a mass of weaker stars which can drown the detail. The brighter stars need to be enlarged if they are to stand out. could you use the value propagate filter to enlarge the stars?

Brand new to this hobby. I have a Z61 scope and EQM-35 mount on the way to use with my stock Nikon DSLR. Do I ABSOLUTELY NEED a field flattener? Why or why not? I'm not looking forward to the processing aspect and don't want to pay for software so Gimp will probably be my software of choice. At least to experiment and see if I have the patience for the "process". Thanks for the video.
@AstroPilotchannel
@AstroPilotchannel 3 жыл бұрын
First of all, yes you have to have the field flattener, without it all but the center of the your frame will have ugly elongated stars in the corners. I know it’s expensive but it’s a must. Secondly, That’s exactly what I did, I used gimp for over a year, it’s a great program definitely if your new, feel free to ask any more questions, I think you’ll love the processing it’s pretty amazing once you start stretching the image and reveal what you captured. All the best and clear skies!

Hello, thanks for the tutorial. I have attempted to capture this target without tracker, with over half hour of exposure. (Unmodified dslr) And I don’t seem to get any sign of the roestte nebula. Any advice on how to shoot it, or do I just need a tracker and modify my dslr?
@AstroPilotchannel
@AstroPilotchannel 3 жыл бұрын
It is possible to do it with a stock DSLR but a tracker is a must, it would take thousands of untracked short exposures to get a good signal, your best bet would be to just go for the full modified DSLR and tracker, let me know if you have any more questions.

What's the secret for a straight black point istogram? A correct masterflat?
@AstroPilotchannel

The key to a really straight histogram where you can get a good black point without clipping data is lots of integration and good darks, bias and flats at least 30 each
