Procol Harum performing with the Hallé Orchestra and Choir at Bridgewater Hall, Manchester 17 June 2001.(Remastered)
Line up:
Gary Brooker- voc, piano
Matthew Fisher- org
Mark Brzezicki- dr
Geoff Whitehorn- guit
Matt Pegg- bass
Nicholas Dodd - conductor
"Repent Walpurgis", composed by Matthew Fisher, originally was released on Procol Harum's first album (1967).
This orchestral arrangement was conceived for the non PH CD " THE LONG GOODBYE (THE SYMPHONIC MUSIC OF PROCOL HARUM) " (1996).
It had it's live premiere at the prestigious Barbican Concert with the LSO in
February 1996. As far as I recall, the only other live renditions were in Guildford (2000) and the Manchester concert documented here.

Repent Walpurgis brings tears to my eyes hearing this again and live. Matthew Fisher on organ is stunning but with the band and added orchestra it transcends. Definitely one of my favourite Procol songs! ❤

This was also part of the 1992 setlist, when Procol Harum was live with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. This is a great version of the Matthew Fisher composition. May Gary Brooker rest in peace. Cheers! ✌️

It's one of the finest songs by PH. The intro on the Hammond is awesome that where you can hear Bach's influence. The "Ave María" part is celestial. A good example where Rock and classical music merges together. It fits perfectly.

I was in a boarding prep school in the early seventies, and wheneverthis instrumental came on the radio the barracks room windows would bloom with high-end stereo speakers blasting at full volume. It was my introduction to the Well-Tempered Clavier Prelude in C-major. Takes me back to a happier time...

Beautiful rendition of one of their very very best tracks. Last song on their 1st album in UK. If I have a funeral, this song will see me off. As stunning now as was back then. RIP Gary Brooker, RIP Keith Reid. Formerly known as Brooker Reid 💚

Found them in the drawer in my bedroom. Right side my Brooker / Procol camcorder tapes from 1993- 2007 (These are the always shaky live clips on my channel). On the left my TV recordings, currently being digitalized. I more or less stopped filming in 2013, everybody had a smartphone and did a better job than me. So, time to retire. Anyway, I'm thankful I had the opportunity to document some concerts after the reunion, esp. Redhill in 1997.

Wow! What a treasure! Thank you for posting this. I was there that night but I have only an audio copy; I had no idea that it had been filmed. This is even better, as the close-ups enable me to see more than I did at the time. (btw, I love Geoff's playing, I really do, but when he blew Matthew out of the water, towards the end, I could have cheerfully unplugged him!) That said, I must remember that what the band hears is not necessarily what the audience hears, and poor Geoff may have been unaware of the comparative volume levels of himself and Matthew.

@@paoloframbrosi1394 Thank you, sir. I know we all have to pass to the next life at some point but, yes, it was very, very sad when Gary left us. And Richard Wright. And Keith Emerson. You're right about Italy; for some reason, PH were better-valued in Europe than in their homeland.

Geoff was a bit quiet in his own solo and rather drowned out by the orchestra so maybe he (or the mixing desk) turned up his volume later on. Just a thought...

Aaaaagh, that drum sound. Horrible. Brushes on the snare would be more appropriate. I even hated the way BJ Thomas originally played this. I just can't understand the way Gary Brooker likes such an agressive and in-ya-face backbeat for his song. To my ears IT DESTROYS the rhythmic and melodic feel. Bach would be throwing up in his grave.
