The Police were old hands at the chart-topping game by the time they released their fifth album. They named the new one after a philosophical concept by the psychiatrist Carl Jung. Synchronicity, released on 17 June 1983, became their fourth UK No. 1 LP in a row when it went straight to the top of the chart dated eight days later. Little did their millions of fans know it would be their final studio album.
Included on the album is the bands iconic song, Every Breath You Take.
Although often thought of as a love song, the lyrics are the words of a possessive lover who is watching “every breath you take; every move you make”.
Sting later said he was disconcerted by how many people think it is a positive song. He insists it is about the obsession with a lost lover, and the jealousy that follows.
The demo was recorded in an eight-track suite in London’s Utopia studios and featured Sting singing over a Hammond organ.
A few months later, he presented it to his bandmates in Montserrat. While recording, Andy Summers came up with a guitar part inspired by Béla Bartók, that would later become the famous riff, and played it in one take. He was asked to put guitar onto a simple backing track, with Sting offering no directive beyond “make it your own.”
The song is considered to be both The Police’s and Sting’s signature song, and in 2010 was estimated to bring in between a quarter and a third of Sting’s music publishing income.
In the US, it was the best-selling single of 1983 and fifth-best-selling single of the decade.
The song ranked number 84 on the Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
In 2015, the song was voted by the British public as the nation’s favourite 1980s number one in a poll for ITV. It topped both the UK and US charts, and was number one for nine weeks in the latter.

The first time I heard this song as a child that summer of 1983, that guitar riff streamed out of every open window in every house. The metronomic guitar riff sounded so natural and familiar, almost inevitable, as if it just descended out of the ether one balmy July afternoon and had always been playing, just waiting for the world to hear it.

This is one of those songs that will always bring me to a specific time and place. Small town New Hampshire, summer of '83, high school coming to an end and no idea what to do with my life. So many years later this brooding, beautiful song stirs up those same emotions of anxiety and fear juxtaposed with the beautiful New England summer. It's amazing how music can trigger deep memories and emotions all across our lives.

If people want to play or hear this song at the wedding, I'd say go for it! It just doesn't make no difference what anyone else thinks. I've always loved this song. It has also kind of dark shades to it, which is totally fine. It's an essential part of this song. But it doesn't change how many people feel about it. For me, this song feels just so heartfelt and beautiful. After all these years, I still feel so warm and positive vibes every time I hear the original studio version.

One thing you missed that to me is crucial about this album is that at the time Sting was experimenting with alternate frequencies for A. Like the old classical composers had done. With this album several of the tunes were recorded in standard tuning but not to A 440 but to alternate frequencies like A 432hz... which is what "Every Breath You Take" was recorded at. It bugged me for years until i started learning alternate A tunings and experimenting with them. Now sometimes, this phenomena can be done by adjusting the tape speed during mastering (like I believe was done on "New York Minute" by Don Henley), but in this case I read that Sting had been experimenting with these tunings and had settled on using them for this album... probably another reason he and Summers almost took each other out! ;)

I always had thought they manipulated the speed of the recorder before tracking the vocals because it's somewhere between A and A-flat. Bugged me when playing bass to the record back in the day.

This was the first song my bass teacher handed to me when I was a teenager. I was a big fan of RHCP and Primus at the time, so the notation on the sheet looked so boring, not many things going on. Then I started playing and realized where the magic was, and I've been a The Police fan ever since. Sting has a tasteful sense of rhythm and pacing, and I believe it has a lot to do with having amazing drummers around like Copeland, Colaiuta (Vinnie is my personal groove deity) and others.

My first exposure to The Police was after an Elvis Costello concert at the Roxy Theater in San Diego. After getting The King's autograph, I walked to my car and found a bumper sticker stuck under the windshield. "Support The Police" it said with headshots of these three punky-looking guys. A short time later, I spotted Outlandos d'Amour at Tower Records, so I bought it. I've been a fan ever since. The kicker to the story is sometime later, leaving the Skelton Club (a punk club in San Diego), I forgot to turn on my headlights. I got pulled over. I figure that bumper sticker got me out of a traffic ticket. I bet the cop, at that time, had no idea who The Police were. As always, great video. I loved the demo on Andy Summers' guitar lick.

And again Sting wrote something like that, and they all played so well. It was a pure joy what I felt. It felt that there wasn´t any boundaries for them. Synchronicity was one of the first albums I ever got - it’s still amazing. Stewart Copeland’s drumming is always fresh and surprising, Sting’s songwriting is original and inspired, and Andy Summer’s ever inventive guitar playing and sounds melds the lot together perfectly. Another stellar job, Warren. I graduated high school in 1983 and this song was the backdrop of that summer. I saw them live at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia for this tour. My band at the time covered "Every Breath You Take" as well as "Synchronicity II." What a great album. I'm surprised you didn't mention The Police Reunion tour from 2007-2008. I couldn't believe they got back together for 151 shows and didn't kill each other. Sting recently said he regrets doing the tour as it was merely an exercise in nostalgia. Oh, well.

I love your "Billy Jean" video I could tell you really enjoyed making it. I am a huge Police fan too. The drums on "murder by numbers" are worth listening to in isolation, against those jazz chords Andy plays on guitar. I really think " let's go crazy" by Prince charged the world. However, I am equally impressed and mesmerized by the funk opus that is " lady cab driver" by Prince. The drum tracks that are played by Prince or Morris Day are super tight, but the guitar solo on this song just makes me wonder what it's like to have so much to say musically.
