Back in 1999-2002, I used to enter every MIDI contest I could find using Cakewalk and a Roland XP-80 and many, if not most, songs were top 3 if not 1st. Long story short, I stopped making music. Now I want to start again armed with my XP-80 and a Roland MT-32. The problem I have is, I do not know what I need to buy these days. Not even sure how to hook up my MIDI outs to a USB port! I can afford mid-range gear, I am just not sure what I need. If you happen to see this, any direction regarding gear. I have headphones, speakers, an array of instruments but prefer to record in MIDI as that's how I did it back in the day, but 'the day' has changed... a lot! Please keep up the tutorials, I watched a Lot of your content today and learned things that I had no idea about - Thank You!

Your story of that Latino group made me think of a current project I am working on. We just tracked a song in 11/4. He made me put the click in 3/4 at 372 BPM. The real tempo of 124 BPM, but providing that click track allowed him to have straight accent notes on the 8th notes of the song while also providing a triplet feel click track underneath… It was insane, and he played every part of the song in perfect time. In 4 hours he alone laid down Piano, Bass, Drums, and 4 guitar parts perfectly in synch. Next he’s bringing in the vocalist and trumpet player. Definitely the oddest and most interesting thing I've done in a while.

Interesting. Not too unlike working Enterprise Infrastructure (IT) in that one should always be a little terrified, lest one make a change that disables thousands of users and costs millions of dollars. However, if one becomes too terrified then it kills progress and creativity which should also lead one to a career change. I am technically "self taught" too and am in charge of mission critical systems for a medium sized organisation but don't see any reason to let it go to my head. Of course, unlike you, Warren, I have grown quite displeased with my career which probably doesn't hurt in keeping one humble. Thanks for the great info and have a fantastic weekend.

Warren, in regards to 21:00, my first "multi-track" recording was done using a cassette karaoke machine. I was auditioning for the vocalist in a band in Sacramento. The guys handed me a mix tape of their instrument-only tunes and a lyric sheet. I used that tape in a karaoke machine with a blank tape in "Tape 2", and just kept leap-frogging the cassettes to make lead and backing vocal tracks. I got the job.

Warren, there's something I've always wanted to ask you since you made the Tegeler Audio Manufaktur Creme Video. What is your way of working with Mixbus compressors? In your videos, it does not look like you would often use one. Whenever you use one, do you integrate it at the beginning, at a very early time of the mix process or do you have another late point where you say, from now on, you going to mix into the compressor? Do you use only one compressor or do you chain several consecutively, e.g. first an SSL and then a Vari Mu? I know the question does not quite fit the topic of this contribution, but I do not know where else to place it.
@Producelikeapro6 жыл бұрын
HI Marc, marvellous question! I use the Tegeler often on my mix bus! I only use one compressor when I mix in a Hybrid set up!

Hi Warren thanks ever so much for your highly informative video, you are a true mentor to someone like myself, why do I say this? well for example I have used limiters like the L1 and L2 to control buss info and often wondered if I am doing the correct thing, I have also used small amounts of compression several times on one source for example bass to control high end and low end info separately, again wondering to myself, "am I doing this correctly" The point I am making is although it felt correct to my ears, it's great to have access to your videos which show these technics happening from a professional like your good self, it provides someone like myself with confirmation and the confidence to trust my ears at all times confirming that there is no right or wrong way just the best way to get a great sound for that particular given situation. I hope I have made sense of what I am trying to convey. Thank you for giving us all the opportunity to see behind the scenes of a professional recording studio. Kindest Regards and keep up the excellent work.

Hi Warren, thank you for all your precious videos! What do you think about Bass > Kick sidechain compression in a different genre other than EDM, but still in a "programmed" environment? Do you like it? What do you think about it? Thank you!
@Producelikeapro6 жыл бұрын
Hi Valerio, marvellous question! I like it on anything where the kick and bass are seriously locked and the Kick is huge in the low end! I would listen for excessive pumping on your mix bus caused by low ned build up and then after brining it down to level that works, if after that you aren't getting the consistent low end you want you can use gentle side chain compression to keep the low end very even!
@nathanbieber28406 жыл бұрын

17:44 That sounds like an "extended" (or larger-scale) version of what i've read someone say about Virgil Donati's drumming: "A short dissertation of Virgil's playing style: step one: play a simple-ish beat step two: suddenly decide that youre bored and choose a new time signature to play in without alerting the rest of the band step three: magically rejoin the rest of the band perfectly on the down beat as if nothing happened" Found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3mthWeNeNN4oZI
