Today we have the wonderful Sara Carter joining us to share her Most-Used Mix Bus Plugins!
Sara is an audio engineer and audiophile totalling 18 years experience recording and mixing music.
She believes that all independent bands and artists should have the same broadcast quality releases as major label artists. Everyone deserves a genuine, professional record-making experience, with releases that sound expensive A.F.
Sara had a fantastic experience mixing music at the BBC in London for nearly 7 years. She worked with artists across all genres although now, her expertise is rock, post-punk, indie and alternative music. At the BBC’s Maida Vale Studios, she worked on hundreds of sessions for Radio 1, Radio 2, 1Xtra, and 6 Music, developing her skills by assisting the best audio engineers in the business.
Through a set of circumstances and meeting new people, it became possible for her to move near to London, and go to the SAE Institute and gain an audio engineering diploma. She was 34 years old.
Shortly after leaving SAE, she saw the BBC advertising for Trainee Studio Managers in their radio operations headquarters at Broadcasting House in London. This was her chance and she went all out to make it happen. At BBC, she worked hard and met some amazing people but she eventually decided to leave the BBC in 2009 and tool a complete break from music and audio.
Through some unlikely circumstances she was able find her way back to music. This is where we find her today, with renewed vigour and passion for mixing music with some amazingly talented people and mentors!

Thanks a lot Sara, really! Going completely over board with plugins finally paid off! I made a 2022 version and threw in Gullfoss live at the start, then the 33609 C, Fairchild 670 (with the option of going Manley Vari-MU), ATR/Studer, switched out the ML4 with the Eventide Split EQ, then the Oxford Inflator and finally I switched the L2 with bx_limiter True Peak and saved it as a mix bus template. I do not go as hard on the Oxford inflator, but kept most of the other settings to get in the ballpark before tweaking to taste. Sounding great! Again, a big thank you. :-)

What a great video! I believe it's the best, most approachable and comprehensive mix bus walk through I've seen. Sara's explanations of her individual steps and every plug-in's purpose and character are fantastic. Thanks Sara for doing this and thanks Warren for making it happen. Extra kudos for the transatlantic content (or rather cisatlantic, from my point of view).

Just the thing she said in the intro made the entire video worth watching. Starting a mix by using "broad strokes" and attacking the busses first, and process the individual tracks only if you need to get more surgical, instead of starting the other way around. I've always started my mixes (after prepping the mix with panning, volume, limiting etc.) with the kickdrum, but perhaps this "broad strokes" could save me a lot of headaches!

I personally like to mix into my mix bus chain as well. I love to use the townhouse compressor from plug-in alliance in the same spot that you use the 33609. It’s so true, people are just used to the sound. Everything just sounds good, especially rock and metal which is what I do 99% of the time.

@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing thanks, Sara! Still waiting to see if it goes on sale before Friday. For the time being, I’m enjoying the bx_townhouse compressor on my mix buss (big fan of Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush, who recorded at Townhouse). Vitamin is a sleeper for me. Amazing for getting the tonal balance right. I’ve had my eye on the McDSP plug-in as a fan of Tchad Blake, too, but I’ve never pulled the trigger. Maybe one day :) Hope to see more videos from you!

Some good suggestions in theory and practice. I don’t have or use any of the plugins you have on your buss but like the overall concepts.The idea of subtle use and coloring is a good one. I do have plugin Alliance versions of some the ones you use so maybe ill play around with them in my chain. Im still tweaking my sub master chain and its currently a mix of plugin alliance and izotope plugins. I always have an ssl channel strip which i often just use for warmth and don’t always use any of the compression or EQ. I just added the new eventide split eq and am testing that out on a track im working on. I also add eq and compression all along the signal path in smaller stages as im mixing. Because im mixing and mastering my own tracks i tend to get everything to a good enough point then bounce down. It’s usually weeks to months before i go back to it and do a final mix/ master session. This way I’ve distanced myself from the track and can make better decisions. I usually listen to the rough mix along the way to decide if i even still like the track enough to want to spend time doing a final. Thanks for sharing the great tips and suggestions.

Because I'm on Linux, I use the LSP multiband compressor in a very similar way. I actually use 6 bands to get a bit more control and also use the mid-side functionality to centre the bass and push the top end out beyond the speakers. I also use x-42 plugins on the mix bus because they are so clean. What I have to work harder for is the tone colouration. Sara gets my vote here because I'm not left wondering what these plug-ins do, which makes it a shed-ton easier to figure out suitable substitutes

Thank you for sharing this Sara, and congratulations on the spotlight you deserve. Why can't I get my head around mix bus processing? Are you constantly checking the levels of the processes on the mix bus with every mix decision you make? Is it virtually set and forget even before level balancing? I've heard from CLA before that he likes the 'needle just being touched', but don't you find later that's ended up as 4 - 6db of compression you weren't aware of?
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing 2 жыл бұрын
Having a template with my group busses and the dynamics processing already active helps, as well as making sure the tracks themselves are in the right ballpark, level wise. You can do as I suggest in this video and start with the threshold all the way open and then set it once you're part way into the mix.

Favourite.... none. I use to mix into a chain and now prefer nothing on the mix bus. I find it better reveals issues that need to be fixed on the individual channels and when the mix is sounding good, then a stock EQ, and a tiny bit of compression/limiting to give it the final touches.

Interesting, I do some similar things. I also use a 33609 with 100ms release, but I've been using the Arturia plugin. I also dial it in slightly differently where I'll dial in the limiter first to get the needle bumping a bit and then the compressor also bumping a bit. I like the sound of a little analog emulated limiting before my digital limiter. I use the UA Studer pretty much the same. I don't really like the Curve Bender tone that much and tend to use the Black Rooster Pultec plugin and I use it before the tape, but that is probably a side effect of back when I had the opportunities to use analog gear. Finally, I was using the Ozone for limiting but have since started using the bx true peak option. Ozone, and the Curve Bender for that matter, do something to the midrange that doesn't suit me.

Fantastic video, Warren and Sara - thank you!! It's good to see that I like a lot of similar versions of the same plugins - mainly Waves stuff, admittedly, but things like the AR mastering console for the EQ, tape simulation, the Puigchild 670 and all that... One question though - isn't this the definition of 'top-down' mixing? I was under the impression that was generally frowned upon (even if the end result still sounds good!)
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing

Yes, I guess it is. It makes sense to me though. I didn't realise it was frowned upon, I just do what works!

Thanks, Sara - it does make sense… I’m guilty of doing it a bit as well, but have been trying to make a conscious effort to avoid it. But then, if the end result is good, I suppose that’s all that matters!

Sara's voice makes me think back to BBC's Rock School of the mid 80s and imagine that Victoria Wood had a guest spot, looking at audio engineering. Serious information, but with a sensible approach and the skills to back it up. It might be grim up North, but we know how to make good music.
