Today, we get to test out the brand new Kali Audio IN-5 Coincident Studio Monitors! The IN-5 is a new 3-way studio monitor with a 5-inch woofer, and concentric midrange, and a 1-inch tweeter.
Before we get into more details, we are also lucky enough to get to give away THREE pairs of these amazing monitors!
The IN-5 is part of Kali’s “Independence” line of 3-way studio monitors, which also includes the larger IN-8. The IN-5 is more than just a “little brother” to the IN-8, though. This monitor is the result of a year’s worth of research and development by the Kali Audio team. The IN-5 introduces a new amplifier platform that reduces self-noise by 12 dB, and implements a more powerful DSP section, which allows for a smoother high frequency response. Kali has also updated the cones on the woofer and the midrange driver with new materials for greater reliability.
These monitors bring an innovative design that delivers exceptional accuracy in all sorts of recording, mixing, and production applications. It was so great to get the chance to try them out!

Warren, it sounds like Kali has hit the mark once again. Last year, I built my home studio around their IN-8s based on your recommendation and have never looked back. And yes, the Switch Witch is still available; also got mine from Sweetwater during last year's studio build for $300 or so, IIRC. Lets me flip between 3 sets of powered speakers plus a sub with no fuss at all. And last but by no means least, rest in sonic power Rupert Neve.

Just got Kali IN-5 and Neumann KH 80 (4 inch woofer). Tested Both with a KRK10G subwoofer set at 70hz crossover. running through RME Babyface Pro FS. I first received the Neumanns and were absolutely underwhelmed by their size and looks. They are small and not really pretty speakers looking more like bigger PC-speakers. They really can`t bass, they are small! But then i bought and connected the 10 inch KRK Sub. When the Neumanns don`t have to work in the lower bass frequencies, they can unfold their potential in the low mids, mids and highs. Then i got an opportunity to lend and test the Kali IN-5 in white (beautiful) from a local music store. I disconnected a Neumann from one channel and connected a KALI instead, and played some songs over Winamp - moving the pan-slider from 100% left to 100% right to directly test KALI vs Neumann. I really wanted to send back the Neumanns and keep the KALIs, - the white model is an eye candy compared to the small black toy-looking Neumanns. I would save lots of cash - it`s 350€/piece for Kali VS 570€/piece for the Neumanns. AAAND the Kalis are 3-way monitors instead of 2-way Neumanns. I have to note - i did not use any calibration software, nor used the Neumanns DSP, nor used any switches on the Kalis. RESULT: all praise for the Kalis is ridiculous. 3 Way your butt! Absolute mushy and muddy mids - where instruments and vocals really mask each other, really dull and truncated highs. You may think they are great, - when you hav nothing good or even mid-tier to compare. Neumanns, compared to Kalis hat much better localisation in the mids - vocals and instruments were separated from each other and you could clearly hear every single instrument/vocal. Aswell as crystal-clear highs. Switching to Kali were as if you would listen through a towel (i am exaggerating a bit, but the difference is immense) and switching back to Neumanns were as if you were back getting fresh air again. I were using Yamaha HS 80 M (almost identical to the newer H8) i would even take the H8 all day everyday over the Kalis. But in comparison to the small, toy-looking, cheapest Neumann KH80 the Kalis are trash. Completely underwhelmed and dissapointed. Gonna bring them back in 2 days and keep the Neumanns.

A comparison of the Kali IN5v2's and the iLoud MTM's. Am very pleased with the iLoud MTM monitors. Two 3.5 inch + tweeter and they have an internal calibration system that comes with a special mic, etc. Amazingly loud with a full-range bass response (remember 2 x 3.5 = 7 inches). I recently (4 months ago) got the Kali IN5 v2's. At first, I was not happy with the high-end and could not hear the reverb and delay trails as I could with the iLouds. Also the sub-bass was not as round, soft, and prominent as on the iLouds. In addition, the iLouds have much much more available/useable gain than the Kali's (a lot more). With all that being said, I engaged the +2db boost on the Kali's and it was a whole different world. They are superb now. I can hear the verb and delay trails, the upper mid's and highs have much more clarity and definition, and (surprisingly) the sub-bass seems more apparent and balanced and is comparable to the iLoud's. There are differences between the iLoud's and the Kali's (the iLoud's still have a softer, rounder, fuller, low-end and the stereo image is a bit different), but using both systems is working out really well. Warren, I know you reviewed the lower priced 2-way little brother of the iLoud MTM's, but you should really check out and review the MTM's too. :) -colin

How I use the dip switches... I have high freq hearing loss. So I use them to flatten it out for MY hearing loss. Then flip them flat and perfect 👌 I no longer need to use my wife’s ears to check my high frequencies. And the low end on the LP8 is exceptional. Not as loud as you think, very clean and clear. Great bang for the buck.

we're huge fans of Kali, I am I know. If that is a Dual Concentric HF/MR unit that is gonna be great for imaging and improve the mid's on your mixing. Also if they do a new speaker 6inch bass with the new unit the price will maybe go up a bit but would maybe give a tad extra output around 40Hz. If you get these new ones, and if Warren says they are VERY GOOD, HE MEANS IT. (I got the Kali 6)

really loved the lp-6's, I tried the in-8, didn't like it, too muddy, maybe the in-5 will produce better bass. Overall, not enough top end for me, but for the price range they are so good. thanks for the review !
@bbfoto7248
@bbfoto7248 3 жыл бұрын
I think that the IN-5 will produce better/tighter MIDBASS, but probably not as DEEP as the IN-8, but still keep the excellent mids and highs due to the coincident midrange/tweeter drivers. Compared to the IN-8, I feel that the IN-5 will have a bit more clarity in the mids & highs and better image focus due to less IMD overall. With the IN-5, they can cross over the 5" midwoofers higher, which limits the overall xmax/excursion on the midrange driver to 1mm. With and 8" driver that is crossed over too high, it starts to beam much much sooner than a 5.5" driver, and the consistency in dispersion/directivity between the midwoofer and the midrange is compromised. When using concentric drivers, because the midrange driver's cone also acts as a "waveguide" for the tweeters (HF), the more the midrange cone moves due to in/out excursion, the more IMD is created from the midrange cone movement modulating the HF wave propagation from the tweeter....i.e. worse comb filtering. I've worked with a lot of concentric drivers recently in DIY designs...most recently the excellent BMS 5CN162HE concentrics (combined with some Ciare 10" midwoofers), and keeping the excursion of the midrange cone to a minimum when using a concentric driver always improves the focus, clarity, and spatial 3D imaging/soundstage. I would give the new IN-5 a listen, especially now that they've improved the self-noise via a new amplifier design, which previously was a deal-breaker for me when listening in a near-field environment.

Hi Warren, I'm finally getting semi-serious about a pair of monitor speakers (moving up from IK iLoud Micro Monitors), I know you liked the Kali LP-6's and I've been looking at them for a while but should I talk myself into the IN-5's at twice the price? How do they compare?
@tomasspacey6828

I feel they try to compensate for small bass driver by huge bass reflex port but while it provides for fair amount of bass it also makes it muddy and lying around there as inevitably it also implies bigger phase issue ... My solution: Close the port by foam and forget about big low end ( while it gives more musical 12dB roll of instead of 18dB slope ) AND/or add a sub . Whoever wants solid bass dirrectly from nearfiels still has to go for bigger drivers in them looks like . I like the top mid approach and would like to listen to it more closely . Thanx for interesting review

Great video & insights into the IN-5. Was looking for a sub to bolster my current BX8 mains then saw your vid on Kali site. Now thinking the Kali WS-12 sub paired up with these little beauties will definately do the job with their coaxial squawker & tweeter and give me a better focussed near-field rig for mixing on - I HOPE. Thanks for the tip :)

Warren you’re the man. Thank you for always giving us top quality content. I’m curious, when you were switching back and forth between monitors, you had to adjust the volume to keep things consistent. I have to do the same thing. I’ve been wondering lately, would it be better to set the speaker volumes on the back of the speaker so that the volume doesn’t change when switching between them? Would love your opinion
@kaliaudio
@kaliaudio 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Matthew! First of all, for every spec except LF extension, the IN-5s are an upgrade from the LP-8. If you still want that LF, the IN-8s are a great option. For speaker switching, a lot of switchers have a gain compensation control so that you can set each speaker to have the same output. Warren changes out speakers fairly often to demo things, which I think is why he doesn't have such a control dialed in here. But if you've got A and B monitors, this is easy enough to do with most monitor controllers. Hope this helps!

Acoustic engineer specialising in studio monitors, break in is usually done by the manufacturer of the transducer (driver) however some companies who make their own transducers (like adam) tend to leave that to the consumer, tho some definitely do it in house. Regarding the kali's, I'm endlessly impressed. They're the only monitors that I've struggled to get as accurate on a budget for diy one of designs, them and the adam t8vs, one genuine consideration for companies I'd love to work for if I ever leave my current employer.

Hi Warren. I could really use your advice. (and great video!...as always) I am on the fence whether to get the Kali Audio 3-Way IN-5 model or the Kali Audio IN-8, 3-Way Studio Monitors. The new control room that I am currently building (for a pretty well equipped hybrid home studio) is 13' wide by about 18' deep. For that size control room do you think the IN-5s or IN-8s would be a better choice? I think I prefer the 8s, but not sure they would be right for my size room. There's only a $100 difference between the two versions. I would value your input (no pun intended!) as you have heard both versions in your studio. Thanks. Philip From The NYC Area
