Your ease and comfort with addressing us watchers, is what makes your video series, so pleasant and enjoyable. Covering the basics in these approximately 3 minutes "chapters" feels, just right. Another "well done, you!". Though I don't use any of these vendors (nor PT), it is the concept that is the point -what to use where, how and why, and you are consistently clear about that. So, if I were to describe your series, I'd have to say it's concise and that earns it high marks! I just read that 'even Tony Bongiovi" starts with plug in presets and then tweaks them, simply for the ease and speed of getting it done. Congrats and thanks to you.

350Hz notched on my drumbus eq made my bass pop out, sound warm and fat and put so much energy into the tune it seemed truly alive for the first time since starting the mix. Thanks so much for your videos. Such simple and great useable stuff that other tutorials seem to completely gloss over but are so fundamental and make so much sense. Awesome :)

I played bass for 25 years before I learned what a compressor does. I never used one, except for the compressor built into my Ampeg SVT 4 Pro, and it never was above about 9 o'clock. I was taught when I first picked up a guitar that a musician controls their volume, and the same when I picked up the bass about three years later. When I learned about compression I read Geddy Lee say that your compressor is in your hands. I had to agree. I can't stand watching a mix, "engineer," take the bass track and compress the life out of the playing. The bass is the most important instrument to emphasize certain notes, and pull back on others.

Warren, thank you for these fantastic videos. As you know, on guitar you like to go through a generally accepted circuit path (as a rule) like wah, comp, od, chor, etc. Is there an order that you generally go through for plug-ins? I mean like do you EQ before you compress? Do you compress before you reverb, or delay before reverb? I guess I'm wondering if you kind of check list effects in a given order (maybe not you, but a beginner like me).

Man. I don't think I have ever watched a KZbin channel in which I can't wait to see the video. Thank again! Do you know if older versions of Logic are still available? My understanding is that Logic X Pro won't work on a early 2008 MacBook Pro 17" and it requires 64bit plugins and outboard gear/hardware. It's been a great computer and modified to the hilt. Duel SSD+HDD 750GB 7200rpm hard drives, 6GB Ram. I don't have the funds to upgrade computers right now. Suggestions?

i learned a tasty reverb trick by sidechaing the verb. you 100% wet it then sidechain it self so the verb kick in some time later. Then you could ping pong delay the delayed verb if you wish! more of an edm thing but i think everyone should know this technique

Ah, multiband compression, so easily you ruin a good mix. I'm looking forward to a video on that beast. I've been sweeping the EQ like that since I first started recording, it's a great way to find the good and the bad. I hear some folk talk about how they never boost EQ, only cut. I'd like to hear your take on that since I'm a fan of the boost to bring that perfect musical element out in an instrument. Great video!

Hi Howard Hedger Thanks for the great comment! I do agree cutting EQ is a smart way to do things, especially in a live situation. Great video. My question is, since a rack mount Neve 1073 module costs around $5000 and a BAE 1073 rack module is around $3500 and the UAD Neve Bundle which gives you 9 Neve plugins for $699 is the best buy. Do you think, aside from price, the plugins stand up to the modules in performance for the price or should we have one high end rack module for the studio? Thanks.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul Schmdit thanks for the great question! Yes for EQ ing in-the-box the plugins would be quite useful. However I recommend at least one Class A mic pre, maybe the BAE 1073DMP to use for recording the signal into your DAW. I know Pro Tools is the industry standard in pro studios, but I already have Cubase 10 (Elements), Ableton Live (Intro with midi controller) both I'm still learning, and Mixcraft (Pro Studio) which I use a lot because it is easy to use. Do I need to have Pro Tools in order to function, interchange files and communicate in the "Pro World"?

Hi Warren, great video. What is the spec on your Mac? You are running a lot of plugins on this session. My iMac complains when I run more than a few. So much so that I spend a lot of time getting the sound right at the recording stage to minimise the need for EQ when mixing> Thanks

+Henry Dore Hey Henry, have you tried changing your sample rate to a larger number when mixing? Typically one trick you can do is increase it. If you keep it low when you're recording you will reduce latency. Then when you're mixing you can increase it, since latency shouldn't be an issue for mixing.
@Samos12

I'm a little confused about the bus thing Warren. When you talk about running an effect on a separate bus at 100% wet, does that essentially mean you have a constant dry signal in the mix (that always remains dry), along with a constantly effected wet signal? Is the bus basically a duplicate of the dry signal that one can play with while retaining, at volume, the original dry signal in the mix? Thanks! :-)

When would you recommend using a linear eq instead of a normal eq plugin?
@bloodlord1989
@bloodlord1989 9 жыл бұрын
Musa Henderson linear phase EQ's have latency and it comes with a potential "pre ringing" ,but cuts or boosts evenly. Minimum phase EQ's don't have latency and don't introduce "pre ringing" and do not cut or boost evenly. Linear phase Eq's are best used when splitting up frequencies. Boosting or cutting too much will give you unwanted effects like "pre ringing" and cuts or boosts are softer on attack then Minimum phase. Minimum phase/normal Eq's are what your going to be using and want to use most of the time and linear phase is best used for special purposes or on the master if it helps.

I'm mixing some songs with a piano and/or organ. How would I go about Eqing them? I have no clue where to start.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacob Toohey thanks for the great question! Firstly I would clean up the super low end, no need for anything below a 100Hz on the piano unless it's taking the place of the bass and is the only instrument. Organ I very often treat like a guitar, maybe lightly overdriving it, adding some verb and/or delay. Some light low mid boost around 150-200hz, not much though and some 3-5k boost for presence. But it would entirely depend on the style of music the track was. What is the genre/instrumentation of the track? Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it! Warren

Hi Jacob Toohey I would dirty up the organ (is it a hammond?) just a little, add some verb and a little delay to it, even try a widener plugin on it and push it in the chorus a db or two to lift the choruses. You should also cover dynamic sidechain Eq later on along with multiband and dynamic Eq's when you get to them. I found Dynamic sidechain Eqing very useful for certain situations with a kick and bass or leads. Made a brief tutorial on Dynamic sidechain Eqing. So far only one plug in i know of does it without forcing it is M-DynamicEq. I normally just use an envelope follower that converts volume into midi information and link it to an EQ on what ever i want sidechained.
