I picked this course up from Pro Mix Academy, I think it's around 6.5 hours of content. I really enjoyed seeing the complete process and David is great. The mastered track is as good as you would expect and for me, it's been great to put together all the learning I've done over the past couple years. Brilliantly done guys! This is the most awesome full-packaged recording guitars video I've ever seen. Watching you choose the mics and even picking a sub makes me think that's the difference between having a real amp loud in a treated room and using a Kemper/Reactive Load Box. It'd be really interesting watch this engineer take mic/placement descitions in a more limited home studio setup.

Gotta giggle a bit at the point where David is switching to right and wants to use the Peavey. I'm old enough to remember when if I said the word Peavey, I was laughed out of the room by my "Marshall Amp guitar God" High School Buds. I kept saying "hey these ain't bad amps." Now here we are more years later then I will admit to and David is like "Wow...this Peavey is good as F***!!" Just a funny little thing to reflect on.

Thanks ever so much for sharing! Yes, those are all comparable to mics that many huge albums were recorded on! Van Halen 1 had 57's and even the cheaper 545 on the drums for instance!

Wow! Gnozzi records in Valentine’s studio on Warren’s channel. Totally an ultimate video. Also I am more interested in producing metal so this video is much more better for me! Btw I don’t always agree with Gnozzi’s ideas (if my thoughts and ideas would clash his, mine would crumble since he has all the experience and knowledge), but he has really good tricks like “recording electric guitars with subkick”. I would definately try it if I had subkick. I’ll try to clone it though... Thank you Warren & David!

FOHFILMS you can actually hear the different in amp hiss on each speaker when you crank the amp up but don’t play anything. The speakers can sound drastically different! Also the bottom speakers usually get some low end reflections from the floor which can sound cool or bad depending on the room

5 mins in and I already use the clean tone and sub kick/room mic trick on my recordings! Awesome lol. Makes such a big difference imo. Even running them to a return track with an IR of a nice room or a kick drum IR can add a toooon of depth to guitar tone.

Man, I would spend weeks tweeking and once I got it, I would change it and eff it all up and start all over. Btw, a real cool description of a studio mic'd solo was Brad Gillis with Knight Ranger if you can find it on YT. He had a very elaborate set-up that gave him some incredible sustain/sound.

Q: Is there a sonically difference if you use a new vs an old NS10 speaker as a mic? The new NS10 speakers, like all new speakers, are kinda stiff because of the coating on the membrane. I understand that this doesn’t make a real difference if you use the speaker near the resonant head of a kick because a kick produces enough energy to move the membrane and so the voicecoil. But if you use it at a distance in front of a guitar amp, I can imagine that an old NS10 speaker works better.

This was awesome. Need to try out a Peppers pedals Dirty Tree to add to your arsenal of overdrives. That thing is brutal . What I didn't understand is why David never used a metro or a ruler to measure the distance from the mics capsules to the grill to actually keep the phase as close as possible, instead of guessing. If you've worked with the mics enough you know where the capsules are. There are landmarks on the mic body you can use -- like the flanges on the 121 are basically where the ribbon is, so it's easy to line up by eye.

He could have noted that this is a an "EB" 414. Old, quite rare and the most highly vaunted given the C12 capsule ;) Not something most of use are going to be able to just reach for ;) I have a vintage BULS, which would be the next best 414 for e-guitars. I respect his outside the box approach, but a sub kick mic on e-guitars? Odd seeing that I don't know one AE that doesn't high pass and low pass highly distorted guitars especially when in metal, the bass is often holding down the low end playing the root.All I heard when he threw that fader up was extraneous, loose low end of no use. My experience with 414s on e-guitars is they're all quite boxy sounding and really hit and miss. 57's are a given as we all know but I've always preferred the 59 and I guess like Albini, don't like all the upper mid hype on the 57. Also love that they have a prototype Bock. I used one of David's e47C's for years and that mic sounded like a record as soon as you through it up! Anyways, great video!

Are tracks like that are next going to tuning? Something like Melodyne DNA? I heard some chords there with some notes out of tune, probably coming from the low string. Or maybe that won't be audible in the mix? I'm asking because I have a similar problem
