My Belgian partner was so offended by William's French Fries etymology this morning while having his cuppa that he blew coffee out of his nostrils and had to change out of his work clothes. So, I asked chatgpt and this is what I got: French fries, despite their name, are not actually from France. They originated in Belgium. The story goes that in the late 17th century, villagers in the Meuse Valley along the present-day border of Belgium and France would fry small fish they caught in the river. However, during the winter months when the river froze over, they turned to frying potatoes cut into long, thin strips to serve as a substitute for fish. These fried potato strips became popular in Belgium, particularly in the region around Namur and Dinant. The term "French fries" likely became popular during World War I when American soldiers stationed in Belgium were introduced to these fried potatoes. Due to the official language of the Belgian Army being French, the soldiers called the fried potatoes "French fries." The name stuck, and it eventually became the widely used term for this popular food item. So there. hahahaha

This info might help with the dog's name: Utrecht is also a city in the middle of the Netherlands, and the /ch/ in it would be pronounced similar to the /ch/ in the Scottisch loch 🙃

We had a sweet jar, and we were allowed a number of sweets from the jar every now and again, but I’d then save half of that amount and keep them in my room, then I’d check every now and again and see how many I had and my cousin and I (we lived next door to one another anyway), she’d do the same and we’d ask if we could sleep round one another’s house and eat our stash of sweets!
