As an ex Death Metal guitarist in my teens I think this is fantastic, the guitar work is sensational but please please someone needs to notice how utterly precise the drumming is and the double bass work and triplicates are incredible. Incredible metal drummer, the initial snare was simply building it up.

Hey Mendel. Kinda just coming out of my way to say that I JUST realized you dropped a new album. Been following you for a hot minute. Just wanted to pop in and say you've once again blown my mind. Not trying to sound like a total kissass, but you're the best musician I've ever come across. Also, I really love that you gave Covenant a touch-up. Fantastic work on this last album 👏 last couple minutes of The Aeonian Shift had me breaking out the notebook. You're a frigging genius dude. Please keep up the fantastic work and don't ever stop.

The snare in the first riff isn't actually a snare. In the live version he uses a different part of his kit. I believe some kind of drum pad, like those oldskool Simmons drum pads.

Your reactions are always of a higher level, they are clear technical analysis. As you, I love this song so much and it gave me goosebumps in the solo part at the first listening. But as you, I’m not full convinced by the production…the live version sounds actually better. They should have called you to produce it! 😉. Great analysis! The first live version was edgy and had feedback intro and outro, which sounded great. This studio version was, well, just ok. Shame as this is the best thing they have done in years, but many have commented they preferred it live. What does that tell you?
@AuroDHikoshi2 жыл бұрын
They might still look for THAT live performance to make an official version of? I think the concerts were a mixed one, not their own so maybe looking for their own feel of shows to get the 100% one?
@michaelcain-pruis24222 жыл бұрын
That it's a Muse song? Muse has always been better live, that's their appeal. I'd also say that people also got accustomed to the sound of the live version for 3 weeks before the studio one dropped. I actually LOVE the studio because the audio is clear - live versions are not.

I reacted exactly the same way to the first time the whammy riff drops, 2:08. Just doesn't hit you that hard. To my ear it's because the guitar isn't double-tracked. It's just panned left while the bass (and that synth doubling it) is panned right. Weird choice for the main riff of the song to be produced in that way IMO.
@mrbungle33102 жыл бұрын
Yeah i hope they try quad tracking or at least double in the future,same was with wont stand down,the guitar didn't feel as big

That snare sound has been present since the "Drones" album, I think. Personally not a big fan of it either, but all thanks to great mixinng and mastering... we get the better end result :)
@Neorigg2 жыл бұрын
Agree a lot with you, the song itself is sick, but the recording and mixing could have been better, especially the drums. Since about 2012 the drums have turned from a rock/metal sounding kit (especially during the Absolution era) to a pop kit, the snare sound is awful and the cymbals have almost no sustain which makes the sound way less heavy than it could have been.
@dimitris4102 жыл бұрын
I think your take is overly simplistic. Their sound overall turned more electronic and commercial even since BHandR. What did you expect, a rock drum sound on Dead inside? Matter of fact, he has created his own sounds, tailored to each song. And on the rock have ones, like Liquid state (2012) or Revolt (2015), the sound Is appropriate
@nothinglessness2 жыл бұрын
@@dimitris410 you nailed it. I think some people are showing a lack of musical knowledge and depth. Some fail to see that the drumming and drum mix is pure genius that goes from pop to Death Metal in one psychotic episode. Sublime.

To me, Won't stand down has sounds much fuller in a way, just way more sound coming at you. This sounds kind of empty in comparison to the live version. Still really like the song tho, just prefer the live version for it's more substantial sound. (edit) and maybe a little too much going on with the editing of his voice with effects and stuff.
