I think that I saw Matt saying that he wanted the pipes of the church organ to sound as they actually did in situ and honour where he played and recorded them. In knowing that I think the finale has more impact, in a sense. Personally I think killing the orchestral toms at the end leaves that final organ note to fill the church room, making it a broader and giving a much more resonating climax. Original and new mixes both holding a strength in different ways.

I definitly noticed how the impact of the organ just didn't hit like it used to, but I love how pronounced the strings are now

I think it’s a sacrifice of making the vocals more understandable. There was clearly more compression of the overall sound in this album, for better or for worse. Personally I’m not sure if sacrificing the explosion of the chorus is worth hearing the vocals considering this song has been out for twenty years, but it definitely works if they want new listeners.
@doggo93883 жыл бұрын
I also feel like the chorus feels less connected. I’m not too knowledgeable on music terms but the bass line or maybe the organ connects through the whole section, and in the remix it feels like it only comes in on the third beat and disappears on the others. That being said I love this remix overall. One of my favorite songs on the album.

I'm way more sold on this than I was on Citizen Erased. The strings in the intro almost competely do it for me. Amazing.

Your reaction when you first listened the new version. That was me. Mind blowing!
@StrixLuke3 жыл бұрын
I personally like how these remixes sounds clearer and wider, but can't help but feel like the dynamics were crushed way too much, which is especially noticeable in this song. It's a toss-up as to which version is "better", but contrary to Citizen Erased, I can't say this new release of Megalomania is the superior one. I also don't like how the weird, synthy phaser effects are being removed. Sure it's easier to listen to the other instruments, but they are important for creating that signature weird space-rock OoS sound. The remix sounds more symphonic than space rock. All in all, everything still sounds amazing and will surely make fans very happy.
@federicomilutinovic57613 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you. The new mix sounds way way better but at the same time since now the verses are louder it misses the shock and surprise of the huge chorus and the outro as well. Great video!
@Mendelian3 жыл бұрын
Jup! It’s also because the bass is playing higher up, which is really cool to hear. But there’s something missing picking up the tonal low end vs the original
@federicomilutinovic57613 жыл бұрын
@@Mendelian I think the bass is playing the same notes in the original. But it has a weird filter effect on. Which also happens to be during the intro. During the verses is off and then it goes on again.

@@federicomilutinovic5761 It is technically playing the same notes, but Chris either played them an octave down or used a pitchshifter/harmonizer pedal with an octave down.

This is really fascinating. I think the final organ note in the remix has a more regal sound, which isn’t worse, just different. Hard to tell which version overall is better though. I like the baroque nature of the original but I like the loud, bold sound of the remix.
@Swann5243 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree that the outro is less heavy and impactful. It definitely has a lot less bass on the final chord. But overall I think the new version is better :). Love these videos

I love the Remix because of the fidelity the Organ has! Yes it is a transformation from Space Rock to Symphonic, but I believe it to fit better the song's message (Megalomiania-Patriarcal pride-Undisputed Authority, as the King of Instrument's).

Agree with you totally on the end. Not as powerful with more base. But I still think I prefer the new one. Always thought the mix was too soft with the strings and vocals. Original Citizen Erased I still prefer slightly but the remaster on this one is incredible. The original I always thought was a bit too melodramatic for how it ultimately sounded that it didn’t feel earned. This new mix feels more appropriate and brings life out of the song.

I actually prefer the new mix's chorus section because you can hear the organ without that loud synth Phazer drowning it out. There's definitely less low-end now, but being able to hear that organ in all its glory is more haunting, IMO. Megalomania is all about that organ, so it being showcased more in the new mix was great. I've always found organ music to be haunting on its own, so I don't really miss the bassy synth.

I think that it's a shame that they removed the metallic sound that appears with the snare one time out of 2 in the verses and the kick and snare at the chorus are to high and don't fit in the mix imo, like they encroach the vocal and organ space, for me that's the reason why it hit less than the original. Also maybe they could have leave the phasing sound in the intro that gives a dystopian vibe to the song. Otherwise the vocals are much clearer and gives more emotions and obviously the strings are great.

In the last organ chord they removed the drums that went with it, so yeah, it does feel less bombastic, i guess the decision was made just to emphasize the organ. Overall the new remix is much more clean at the cost of losing some of the low end frecuencies heard on the original, but im all for it, maybe more on the other songs of the album than this one
@Tocaraca3 жыл бұрын
Second verse string section is awesome but before that point the organ arpeggios are much less prominent which I don’t like. The final organ chord also doesn’t hit as hard, as you said; not sure why, maybe coz the organ is already super prominent in that outro part before the final note, so it’s not like it can get much louder than that. It loses a bit of dynamic which sucks. But overall, the old one’s organ doesn’t pop as much in the choruses. New version is def superior for me despite the couple of downsides.
@zookacchi3 жыл бұрын
The organ was too goddamn loud in the outro LOL which is a shame. Also I feel the backing vocals though is a bit more quieter in the 2nd chorus and carnival section. Though, everything else is absolutely amazing.

Original sounds more grounded, there is definetely more wide and enveloping bass, it's like really deep foundation than doesen't let any other part to go outside. And remix sounds too... uh... screamy. It's like a giant cathedral: in original mix you stand outside and you look at that monstrocity from below, and you can hear it's low ground-shaking roar from outside and all the high screams going skywards, but in remix it's like you're inside of it, and you just can't see how big it is, you only see the ceiling, and it screams and roars right in your face all the time and just exhausts you.

the thing i hate about the new mixes is the high end of the vocals. i know it's the standard now, but it's too much high end. it's like every word has a sibilance to it. and i blame it on us getting used to the cellphone harshness.
