Just got one 8x8' and did one more step. remove all rubber end caps and the roof panel joint pipes and spray in great stuff foam sealer to keep water out of the pipes. Replace the caps and joints before the foam dries! Much easier to do BEFORE assembly. I do the same thing on hunting stands after they froze with water in them and split. 3 month old stand ruined from rust and splits from ice. Luckily no one fell when it broke. Always climb with a safety rope!!! saved my Life. Foam works great and adds very little weight and it is closed cell foam that wont absorb water and will probably triple the life of the unit.

Love the pen. As far as the plastic poop catchers go I would keep them. Plastic is easy to wash off. Wood will soak up uric acid from the feces and stink. Putting a heat lamp in there will likely kill the chickens if they are unable to get out. They will overheat fast even with the vent open and the poop trays could melt. If your temps get below zero then get a setup recommended by your Co-Op. Also with the feeder just go in and feed them because if rain blows in it will get in the feeder. On the top portion you could use chicken wire to keep anything from getting through the rectangles or the same wire you used in the corners. The smaller the wire size the best for keeping out snakes. You could electrify the pen If you end up having problems. If you have red ants or other bugs that crawl around they will find a way into the feed if kept on the bottom of the nest boxes. Wild animals will chew and scratch their way into the feed. The latches are very easy for them to move open too. I don't know if their is any containers that are able to seal out the bugs or smell of the feed but good luck.
@monroehillfarm74235 жыл бұрын
Eddie Lane yea I kept the plastic ones and they have worked out great.

I would not recommend a 250 watt heat bulb as it is too hot. However, you can use a reptile heater which screws in a standard light socket but is a heat element, not a bulb. They come in various wattages, I use the 150, highly recommend! Resealable 5 gallon buckets with lids work fine for feed. If you are concerned about the latches being opened use small carabiners you can get at the dollar store. Keeping all predators out of a run is very difficult as you must have a no dig apron of mesh around the entire perimeter. I prefer to insure the chickens are secured in the coop nightly for their safety, this way the sizing of the run fencing is not an issue. I use the retriever kennel from Tractor Supply, 10' x 5' x 6' high, on sale now for $299. As an aside, chickens do not produce urine, they only poo and don't pee.
@eddielane95694 жыл бұрын

Concerning the upper fence sections...weasels are great at climbing and can easily get thru those gaps. That said, they are nocturnal hunters so if you are religious about cooping your flock at sunset you should be OK. Same for the gate door… can it be placed on any wall for different layouts? My one gripe are those pans inside the coop. I’d rather be able to do a deep litter method and I don’t think it’s possible with that set up and the location of the nesting boxes. Do the 11 chickens fit into the coop with enough room? Pss,.. where you put your solar light on that right corner I think it should be over the door or the chicken coop is at on the left side and on the left side of the panel and then on the right side where you have your bucket there you need one of those big blue tubs that have a hole in it and you put your PVC pipe there with a valve yeah and when the water rings down from the side it goes into the PVC pipe into that big it's like I think 50 gallon blue tub you know yeah and it would store your chicken water in it and you can have two of those uh-huh what is above and one below on that little side tray instead of making a bucket use one of you harbor freight blue big long I think they're 50 gallons blue tubs and you can collect the rain water off of that corner to go into a PVC pipe into both barrels and that would also help you there you also want to too long PVC pipes on the outside to feed your chicken feed down and I went to put two cut two square holes in it so you can put little screws with your drill and see when it's filled to the top and when it gets halfway feel that you need to fill it again yes and then to keep a clipboard every time you do that so you know how much feet you're using for that year yeah for your chickens and it would be 11 chickens and one rooster because I looked it up and it said 10 chickens to one rooster yeah, yeah and that would be good for a year bigger pen and since you might have problem with that baseboard I told you you were using that side wire mesh you know the chickens there but instead of using that wire mesh I would use that roofing material that is a triangle that you would use for your roofing and put that there with the drill in with two screws and that would prevent any rats from getting in through those holes too and you wouldn't have to use that chicken mesh there and that would be a good support for it also yeah, and if you wanted to make a feeder also out of PVC pipe cut it in half and use that white plumbing that tightens at the end that's around bulb you know to unscrew also and you can put that there and glue it and that would be your new feeders on each side of your chicken coop yeah 💟💟💌🌄

How many chickens will fit comfortably in this coop? I wish the back storage compartment was open to the run. Perhaps that's a modification I could make? I'd rather have more covered space for the chickens under the coop. I'd probably be adding the wire as well. Too bad it wasn't in a black finish to match. I read a lot of reviews and I'd likely add another vent across from the other one for some cross flow. Also do you think there would be room for another roosting bar higher up in the coop? Three years later. I would not worry about the larger square holes in the upper fence. Chickens will only be in there during the day and hawks and so on cannot get to them, all the other predators like racoons, weasels, etc generally make their raids at night. Chickens will be in the coop at night, I would however not rely on that sliding door to keep them secure. A racoon can and will dig under the run, and use those front feet and just slide the door open. Put a secure latch on it . This requires two trips inside daily to latch at night and open in the morning. Such is the way of raising chickens. I have also learned to never ever rely upon fancy automatic opening and closing doors, more sooner than later they will malfunction and that one night you forget or are busy the door will not shut and the next morning you are three chickens short. Honestly you can make the pen fit probably any coupe. I have it connected to a shed now.

Good job that's what I was looking for Really love to see how it looks like after 2 years Just a suggestion if you have snake or even mouse issue it will be better to cover the big holes with some kind of netting

Luckily we haven’t had any issues over the last two years. It’s been absolutely awesome!!

I would add chicken wire to the upper walls of the chicken run.

Not sure where you live or if you mentioned it, but how is the run when it comes to snow accumulation? I don’t think that cover would hold the weight if there was, say, a foot of snow. Would it have to be reinforced underneath and would a pvc roof work better?
@monroehillfarm74232 жыл бұрын
We live in Northern Mississippi and don’t get that much snow so it’s hard to say. The most we’ve had is around 3-4” and it held up fine. If you get a lot of snow then I would probably reinforce the roof with support boards under it and use a metal roof system.

@@monroehillfarm7423 thanks for your reply. I’m assuming you can configure the run to have the door in a different spot?

@@monroehillfarm7423 it’s a little over a year later and we’re changing out the roof for a corrugated roof. When it rains, there’s no way to keep the rain from getting between the roof and the coop. It drips right down where they come out of the coop. How did you deal with that? It’s funny how you say at the end you want more chickens. My husband, who will be doing most of the work to redo the roof, doesn’t even want the chickens. It’s really a big expense. When they get bumblefoot, it’s not fun. Lol
@monroehillfarm7423 Жыл бұрын
@6942pjka I never had an issue with any water getting in. If you are having that issue I think corrugated roofing will solve the issue for sure. I would just make sure to run it from the very top of the run onto the coup and not just on the coup.

Did you ever fill the gaps around the door itself. If so how did you. Presently wrapping the whole thing in hardware cloth but the door has me stumped.
@monroehillfarm74234 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Opie never did the door gaps. You could mount a piece of wood between the door and the gap. Only issue is you can only swing the door in at that point. Just left mine as is and haven’t had an issue.

@@monroehillfarm7423 Thank you for your reply.. Unfortunatly, I will have to figure something out. While in the process of constructing this chicken coop, we had our chickens attacked by a fisher., it killed one and injured another before it was scared off so now we are not taking any chances. (this was in the old coop) Once I figure out a solution I will reply again so others that read these comments could see.

@@monroehillfarm7423 I ended up trimming some 1" pvc, strapped to the jam then wrapped it with the hardware cloth. It came out pretty solid. Now I have to figure out how to cool the hen house portion. During the day it has been getting into the 90's and its only May here in CT. and im concern that it will only get worse as summer comes. The rear vent is open and the door into the run is open and still getting that hot.

It DID NOT come assembled. That being said, it was super easy to put together. Took maybe 3 hours to have it completely assembled. It comes in sections that easily screw together. All hardware is included. You will be happy with it.
