I love to see how the log gets slabbed down to so many usable pieces. Slabs a bit wider front-to-back and a bit thinner top-to-bottom would make great bar or counter tops. I'd love a hardwood slab bar in my home if I had space. I see people build custom Lego tables with plywood. I wonder if you'd be able to make a laser-etched pattern of Lego baseplates into the surface of a hardwood slab and then epoxy finish them into usable Lego studs. Have Lego buildings come right out of the tabletop! Impractical for sure, but I bet it would get a ton of views and love as a convention piece!

I built my Roubo a few years ago after I retired....but it is sure tempting to obtain a 'kit' from Matt....I've been very satisfied with my bench from reclaimed Fir....but one in Maple....Whew!! By the by....if you are considering building a Roubo bench, I found it a great experience and the absolute heart of my shop. I had to put mine in a left hand corner, so the vise is on the right as one faces the bench....but I have found this non-traditional location has not been any sort of a problem. Perhaps because I am 6'3, who knows. As to the height....I followed Paul Sellers' lead (he is also 6'3) and made it 39" high....and it sure is kinder to my back. Take the time to fit the sliding deadman....it's a nice touch appearance-wise and I use it frequently. Get your holdfast from Crucible Tool....I ended up with two and use them both at times. Luxury, eh? One other thing.....if you put linseed oil on the top...do NOT get any down the dogholes....it will be months before they hold and will never be as crisp as they were dry. Yeh....experience. -Veteran '66-68

What makes us look at someone take a tree that someone would just let go rotten and turn it into a beautiful peace of wood and just want to do this all day long. I live in a suburban area of NY not far from Manhattan have no property to speak of yet with a chainsaw mill I have milled several trees and overworked my bandsaw. Just to have some nice peace’s of lumber that I have turned into every thing from small projects to furniture. I wish I could have this type of equipment and property to do this maybe in the next life. I’m Jealous, but you have talent and a wonderful attitude you can be proud of what you have accomplished.

Matt: all that rip-saw work with the chain saw. Do you set the teeth different? I looked them up last year (2021). The makers of rip chains don't want to sell to anyone not working professionally at it, pretty much in a shop setting. As they explain it, it is just too dangerous. You made it look like it's no particular problem, the chips were long and neat, speed seemed reasonable. Redo-ing our chains to the "rip-angle" was more than we wanted to do, considering we'll probably never do another like that. Not into danger, anyway. We aren't pros. Took down a cottonwood that was threatening a house. That butt was so big and heavy, we had to cut it into quarters - and our chain-saws (or the chains) weren't really up to it.

To preface my comment, I have no idea what I'm talking about. But would it be possible to attach something like a small one foot extension to the mill bed so the winch attachment point is far enough beyond the bed's end that he wouldn't need to push the carriage at the end of longer cuts?
@mcremona
@mcremona 2 жыл бұрын
He could also stop loading the logs too far down the bed 😅
@matthewsmith8573
@matthewsmith8573 2 жыл бұрын
@@mcremona I like your answer better, but I'd wondered if just moving the attachment point to the top of the bed instead of the bottom would give the extra inch of travel you needed for a couple of those cuts. @26:00: As someone who has had to trim multiple logs with a chainsaw to get the sawmill frame past an obstruction, I've also wondered about adding some "dog brackets" farther from the edge of the bed so that outer edge is less likely to get in the way.
