PRODUCT ADVISORY: SHS gen 4 bevel

I've heard of these breaking left and right. This is now the fourth one I've heard of. My teammate is running a set of Gen4 13:1's at 430FPS at 40RPS so I'd say it's a lemon. It seems like they have a slightly higher failure rate than Gen3's.

Yeah Max Lawsin got a failure with them as well in a less extreme setup. Wasn't going to use the bevel in my setup anyway.

happened to a pair of 16:1's of mine about same amount of teeth also, it happened to me because my ARL spring was dead when i opened the gearbox. guess it spun back when i was semi spamming, perhaps its a problem with the arl slipping?

Question...? I just shimmed my gears as good as I can get them. Problem: the spur gear is as LOW as it can go with the smallest shim I could find on it, and everything else as low as possible accordingly. However, the sector gear is at the "top" of the piston teeth rack and not in the middle. Will this be an issue? How can I fix this? Thanks!

what piston? Make sure the piston itself isn't warped. If the teeth on the piston are still making contact with the teeth on the sector you should be fine. If it's not and you can't get any lower you might need a different gearset or bushings/bearings? It usually isn't an issue assuming the teeth aren't munching into the plastion on the piston.

valleyriverarms Brand new magic box POM piston, its not warped and the teeth touch. They don't go off the edge either... Another question... Any tips on shimming? I had my gun as perfectly shimmed as I could get it and was expecting a nice crisp piston hitting sound only, but it seems like I hear a winding sound on the gears...? I have 8mm ball bearings from G&P and think they are pretty decent, but don't know the exact problem. Thanks!

***** Well, you are supposed to shim from bevel to pinion, all those tutorial in youtube that state that you should shim the bevel as low as possible are simply wrong. I don't think there is a problem if the sector teeth are not meshing with the piston dead on the centre of the piston rack, as long as the gear teeth are making full contact. Hope that helps

Sorry about the irrelevant question but i was wondering if I should put sorbo pads in my all my aeg's. My main gun shoots ~430 fps and 28 sps with an 11.1v and my backup shoots ~360 fps with 35 sps and they are gettinjg siegeteks soon. In case it helps the main gun is running an ASG ultimate 35000 and the backup is on a lonex a2.

If you need to correct AOE then yes add sorbo

I had the same failure in my 12:1 recently. 2 teeth broke on my bevel gear.

Hopefully is was a lemon, my whole build is now falling apart. My lonex shell just stripped a grip screw hole. These gears might all suck. It has taken me a year to get to this point, and now even longer... :(

Was it an extreme set up, because I heard others were running them in set ups that most would consider beyond the strength of these gears? This is disappointing to see, hope it is a lemon as I planned on trying some out soon my self. Most of the reports so far seem good, but being ACM it is not too surprising that stuff like this will happen assuming it is a lemon.

it was fairly extreme. high speed motor and these gears hitting like 42 rps. But I've had shs gearsets hold up under the same sort of load.

properly a lemon for sure or you did not shimmed it properly with the spur gear. Friend of mine run 150M DMR on shs gen 4 18:1 gear :) works perfekt !

valleyriverarms yeah is saw some of your setups ;-) looks like you know how to shim :P. Actually I upgratede 2 of my friends DMR's with 160M springs, which gave us 2.8Joul on a 0.25bb and 3.1Joul on a 0.4bb... - SHS gen4 is very strong !
