I think the water conditioner recommendation they give is because some areas the tap water isn’t good enough to drink. My friends tap is clean enough to shower and wash clothes in and brush your teeth but he has to fill jugs with water provided by the town out of a tube in the side of the road that constantly runs fresh spring water. The pets art I got my gecko at says u should use spring water for misting and for water bowls

If that's true, I'd be a bit (a lot) concerned about her wellbeing and checking her constantly to make sure her calcium levels are ok and she's doing good and I'd probably give her the next 2 seasons off, but that's me, not a breeder, just someone that has an opinion and reads a lot and watches videos from guys like brian. I may be off but I find that excessive. If true.
@ScarfaceGuy101
@ScarfaceGuy101 4 жыл бұрын
PewPewCat the gecko would certainly be dead if that was at all possible essentially in order for that to happen the date of fertilization and laying would have to be perfect each and every time which simply isn’t the case plus like you mentioned the health of the animal alone all that laying would certainly drain her of a lot and more than just calcium precious energy protein all of it it would starve and deplete the animal

Great honest review Brain . While that exo terra size your showing is good ! . The size up ( small tall ) 18+18+24 inch is the one I have trouble with. The reinforcement bar is dangerous as it has sharpe edges . My gecko Smudge bashed her nose nasty on one end of the edge jumping from her bridge to her high up hide and now she has a nasty scare . I got a cool melt gun and neatly stuck foam along the “whole length”of the bar just to be sure . Best wishes for this years babies 😊

Altitude Exotics hi there, I just switched my crested gecko from a generic smaller tank with a paper towel as substrate to an Exo Terra 12x12x18 tank (not the crested gecko specific) in which I added a jungle mix substrate (supposedly safe for geckos). The new tank has all new decorations in it and, while it is really nice, our gecko seems really stressed (darker color) and cannot be handled at the moment. He goes crazy as soon as you open the door and runs everywhere. He seems really distraught! I’m thinking that all this change really affected him. He is still eating though, so that’s a plus. Have you encountered such behavior yourself?

I have 3 red ear slider turtles that are 14 years old 2 girls 1 boy . I got them when they were the size of a quarter as a gift .Anything with a suction cup they love to pull up,lol. What is your personal opinion on putting 2 females in a 55 gallon converted aquarium? Just curious. It's 48Lx12Dx21H. Most people will freak out at the thought, but if putting two females of the same size in there at the same time, providing multiple hides and food/water spots and many many plants (well, also hides...) because it's bioactive, I feel like that shouldn't be an issue. What do you think?
@AltitudeExotics

aVirgin 1. They can only be housed together for a very short period of time. Once they’re done breeding they must be separated. 2. I don’t recommend breeding. It shortens the lifespan of the female and she could get eggbound, which can require expensive surgery or even kill her. Crested geckos are already overbred as it is.

Should be fine. Bottled water often has low amounts of added mineral to adjust flavor. Might be the only thing to consider. I use filtered well water for soil and plant roots which is probably not as good as bottled due to iron content. I mist with distilled so I don't have to clean the glass as much because of lack of mineral.

Not free of chemicals added for human consumption, but free of microorganisms, for better or worse. Filtered water from the fridge is good, but too cold for your room temperature cold blooded animal. Allow to near room temp before adding, or add to tank after light is on for the day, allowing it to rise to temp before your gecko wakes up.

I've had both and the ZooMed was the winner in my mind, due to its single panel door not obstructing front views and arguably holding in humidity better. Both latches and hinges are about the same, which is "ok" but nothing remarkable. The ZooMed could accommodate a small padlock where at the time the ExoTerra did not, but I think the Exo's are pad lockable now as well.

@AltitudeExotics
@AltitudeExotics 7 жыл бұрын
+Michael Fabregas I would definitely keep males and females separate cages. You could do 2-3 females in that cage, but it would be important to watch them closely for bullying. Not all females will get along, look for things like bite marks on the tails, legs and head. Also keep an eye to make sure they are all eating. Sometimes bullying isn't physical, but one gecko will refuse to let another eat.

As long as the crickets have enough food available, they won't eat the cardboard. When their food runs out, crickets will eat pretty much anything.

Overall. fantastic reveiw! I am buying a crested gecko next month, and I was actually between these two tanks. I thank you for this reveiw because I wasnt sure what exactly came with each kit. I will probably go with the exo terra. Great decoration piece and a fantastic tank. I have two bearded dragons who have a suction cup plant inside that they dont use, so it saves me more money to buy those plants. All I will have to do is add a few more climbing pieces and I will be good to go! Thank you!

+Seppe Bresseleers meal worms get a bad reputation sometimes. The who myth about them eating their way out of a lizards stomach is just a myth. Many larger breeders feed meal worms because it is more cost effective. Nutritionally however, crickets or roaches are better options.

Okay people, look up what your local city or towns water supply is, and confirm that way wether you need to treat your water supply. Tap water can be treated with a multitude of different chemicals (chlorine, chloramine, flouride, sodium silicate, etc.) depending on where you are located. The only chemical you are removing when you let your water sit overnight is chlorine. CHLORAMINE is different and does not evaporate. Do your own research and find out if your specific water source is safe. The harder your water source is, the more mineral deposit stains will be left on your glass. If your reptiles are receiving the proper vitamins and nutrients, they do not require calcium in their water source and could actually contribute to overcalcification in your reptile. The chlorine levels in my city in Canada are so high. I don't drink the tap water so I'm sure as hell not giving it to my reptiles. Safest bet is to find a local water store that sells distilled or reverse osmosis water. You can refill your own containers and it's about 20cents/litre (cheaper than reptisafe or bottled water).

charlotte Bourke Generally you can use it for one but it’s definitely not even close to the best option, leopard geckos prefer more ground space (there are exoterras that are wide instead of tall like this one!) while crested geckos prefer being up off the ground which is why it has lots of height.. :)

Tommy Curson-Smith , no they don’t. Make sure you feed your gecko “ crested gecko diet “. You can feed them crickets once in while as treats. Make sure you dust them with calcium also gut load them too.
@-8_8-

They need bugs. They either need bugs in their diet or they need dusted (and preferably gut loaded) crickets. I use a flavor of Pangea that comes with black fly larvae and so is a complete diet. I also occasionally feed crickets. In the past I have had success with other feeders as well, but remember that the geckos throat is MUCH smaller than his mouth. If you choose to feed a vegetarian diet and supplement with feeders, know that these crickets still need to be dusted even though there is calcium in the feed. I feed dry pangea to the crickets and use a soaping wet paper towel(we are talking maybe 12 small). After a day, they've eaten and can be dusted and fed to the gecko that evening. I use a feeding box(plastic shoebox) makes it easy on the hunter, and no chance for impaction. Read up on impaction.
@sparta7660
@sparta7660 6 жыл бұрын
dixiesecularskeptic, no they don’t NEED bugs. Crested Gecko can live a healthy life without feeding them crickets. They don’t need to eat any bugs at all. I’m not against feeding them bugs, like you said make sure you dust them and hit load them. Crested gecko diet is all they need.
@-8_8-
@-8_8- 6 жыл бұрын
Sparta 76 My understanding is that if you are feeding a complete diet that has bugs you do not need to supplement with feeder insects. Otherwise you do. In the wild there's not always over ripe fruit, so what would they be eating? Even in the early days it was baby food and feeder insects. Crested Geckos are not herbivores, right? If you have evidence to the contrary please provide a link, I'd like to see the data.

Anyone seen a digital hygrometer that can be caliberated? I had a cheap digital. After a few months it started saying my humidity was low even right after it misted. The analog can be caliberated, but takes a long time for readings to change. Any thoughts on products here, even zoo quality if necessary?

1. You have to mist the cage to keep the humidity up, and crested geckos rather drink water off of the leaves and walls. Misting is essential. 2. You need the calcium and reptivite to dust you insects. They don’t need insects, but it’s really good for them 3. You have to condition the water because the chlorine and other stuff can be toxic to your geckos. Just because you didn’t have any bad experience with your geckos, never means that it won’t happen. Rather be safe than sorry
