Currently on day 15 of my Fusion 360 free trial. watching your 2023 new series, Up to date with them (Currently at day 9) while waiting, browsing your older files. Your videos give me so much confidence, I purchased Fusion 360 one year. Looking forward to the new 2023 series, and enjoying your older stuff which is still very useful. Thinking of purchasing you a coffee soon. All the best from Sydney Australia. (Been 3D printing for 2 weeks now) cheers.

I shouldn't complain about free lessons, but the 11:34 problem took a lot of comments reading to find the solution. Maybe an updated video showing the importance of the "Auto project edges on reference" preference would be in order. I do appreciate all you do. Fantastic channel. Big thanks to Sami for finding the solution!

Thanks for this! The only thing that threw me for a bit of a loop was adding an angular dimension (so far I've only added linear dimensions, so this was new). Outstanding video. I wish your collection of videos had been recommended to me by every search I ran trying to do basic things when I started with Fusion 360 (couple of weeks). I would have saved myself tons of time, aggravation, and the frustration of hitting things by random trial and error. With the enormous depth of the Fusion 360 user interface, exploring things by trial and error is the worst possible way to learn how to use the product. Thanks for your efforts, please know they are appreciated.

Issue: The "Model" workspace is no longer shown in Fusion 360. The "Design" workspace is shown instead. Some of the previously available environments (Patch, Sculpt, Mesh) seem to be missing as well. The Model workspace has been renamed the Design workspace. Sculpt, Surface, and Sheet Metal are available the tabs shown on the toolbar at the top of the screen. Causes: The UI in Fusion 360 was updated in the September 2019 update.

Excellent class set. I followed along and will now try and print to see how the hinge will work. I can see problems if the bottom part of the box and top aren't equal and can't both lay flat with the base on the bottom. How would you print that type of box - or is this beyond the intent of what you are trying to teach. Had to ask.

8:47 Man, I just came here to watch this video by following the link in "How to Design 3D Printable Hinge". First of all, I started to use Fusion 360 about 10 days ago, I knew the basics Autodesk Inventor (which I find really similar to F360), and that helped me a lot. Anyway, this is just a little story, I'd like to say thank you because I've seen a lot of useful concepts in your two videos, from using the right tools, to named parameters (extremely powerful, it's like introducing a bit of "coding" into 3d modeling). I'm going to add printable hinges to a model that I'm editing...the only difference is that I've got a UV resin printer and I'm not completely sure about .5mm of clearance. Maybe I'm wrong, but it may be the "dot" resolution even in this setup. Btw, no problem: I will set a parameter and align the value with the printer's specs before printing. Thank you again 👍

I need to watch more of this guy's videos. He seems like he overcomplicates the sht out of everything, but had I applied all these techniques to my larger more complex projects, it would have probably saved me from like 500+ headaches and countless hours trying to resize stuff. I'm going to try to change my ways and think like this, using variables and simple math to attach dimensions and use tricks like how he used cube height / 2 for that construction plane because the way I do these things is definitely not as efficient lol. I feel like this method of using cad could lead to very rapid product development which has been my life goal lately.

Hi, Ron. Glad you're learning a lot from my videos! You can always try adding a minus sign in front of the dimension value in your Extrude dialog box. If not, I'm happy to help troubleshoot further. Cheers, Kevin :)

I had same problem John, I tried Sami's preference change but it didnt help. I did find the issue in the end. The measure line showing 2.95 was stopping the ability to select the top body right line to set the 45 degree. I grabbed the 2.95 measurement reference and pulled in down far enough so there was some of the box line to select and it worked.

Just curious, why didn't you make the length and width of the box parameters, as well? Seems like that would be handy for making the box change size quickly.
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 5 жыл бұрын
Great question, Jeff! Personally, I try to only use parameters if I'm going to be re-using them in other areas of the model (as in multiple times). You could definitely set up parameters for the length and width, but if that's the only place that you'd be using them then it wouldn't really save you much time in comparison to just editing the sketch dimensions. If wanted to always keep your box a perfect cube, no matter what the size, then creating a parameter for the length, width, and height would be ideal. Thanks again for watching! Cheers, Kevin :)

Pharmcat I can't get the top area under tangent line to select. I select line then click a point on the top box and draw my line to the circle The point remains clear and I'm doing it the same way as the bottom box, which is fine. What am I doing wrong? Excellent videos! I've just been doing this for a month. Thanks

Hi Ron, please make sure that you have the "Auto Project Edges on Reference" setting turned on in your preferences. Here's how to check - productdesignonline.com/fusion-360-tutorials/10-questions-fusion-360-beginners-always-ask/#3 Cheers, Kevin :)

@@ProductDesignOnline Hello, Kevin, same thing as above. Even after I make sure the Project Edges is on (it was on all along), the SECOND of the lines (the top one) doesn't define the surface when created. It doesn't matter whether I stop the sketch operation or not.

When making the rectangle ( square ), fusion 360 says that it's fully constrained but when I change dimensions of one side the body deforms ( other dimension does not update ). Have tried adding equal constraint additionally but fusion wont allow as it says that geometry is over constrained.

Hi, Paranajape. Could you please share your file with me so I could take a look? Share your public link as a reply to this comment. Here's a video explaining how to share a public link - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aInVlKWai5JrgtU Then, please write a separate comment letting me know you've replied with a link because KZbin flags most links and I don't always get notified. The same is demonstrated at minute 12:01 of the part 2 of this tutorial. You were able to change the length without affecting width ( shape change ). Is it still considered fully constrained? I think it's just a small confusion.
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 5 жыл бұрын
@@paranajape Let me try to clear up the confusion. The goal of a "fully constrained" sketch is to make it easily predictable to know what any changes to the model would do. Meaning, that you can update the desired dimension, and know what else within the model will be affected. It does not necessarily mean that all dimensions will change when you update one of them or the opposite. To double-check that your sketch is fully constrained you can check the sketch icons next to your sketch name. Take a look at this reference image: snag.gy/kNPzbr.jpg You'll notice there is a red thumbtack icon next to the box and hinge sketches. This red thumbtack means that the sketch is fully constrained. The goal of this box would be to make it easy to change dimensions of the box, without throwing off the shape of the box, or other dimensions that you wouldn't want to be affected. I made the box so one side could be updated, without the other, in case it's useful to have one side be longer than the other. However, if you wanted all four sides of the box to always be equal, then you could set up the dimensions and constraints to enforce that as well. To summarize, having fully constrained sketches is important to help the user understand how the model will change when any specific detail is updated. I hope this clears up some of the confusion! Cheers, Kevin :)

Hi, Abdul. You will need to right-click on the joint motion and select the "Edit Joint" from the menu. You will then be given the rotation slider where you can either drag the slider or enter the degree value to get the top lid to the desired position. Cheers, Kevin :)

I'm jumping in to the middle of this series. ...I've often heard the term parametric design for 3D models. Is this idea of creating "variables" for height, thickness, and gap an example of parametric design?
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! That's one aspect of parametric design. At its core, Parametric design is about setting your models up with "Design Intent" so you can change dimensions/features with predictable manner.

I know this is long overdue, but just in case for the next guy: He projected the top box that's why that line is purple. Once you do that you can add the angle dimension for the top.

Hey, I'm stuck in section 11:34 because when I connect the upper line with the tangent of the circle, the area inside is un-selectable, unlike the bottom. this prevents me from extruding the hinge in the future. I've copied your tutorial exactly and don't see the problem, and need help. Thanks for the great tutorials though!

Hi, DJ KIM. If the area is unelectable then that means it is not fully closed somewhere. Double check that you have a line on the left and that all the lines are touching. If you still don't see anything share the link to your file with me and I'd be happy to take a look. Cheers, Kevin :)

@@sapraayush Hey I had this issue just today when I was trying to make a hinge; I didn't have it before but I have recently reinstalled everything on my laptop, so that gave me the clue. If you go to Preferences (Click your name in the top right corner) then go to "Design" that's under "General" there will be an option that says "Auto project edges on reference". If you tick that, then select apply then ok, it should work.

My Fusion will not move to Z axis up even though it sets ok in the settings?
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Derek. Are you trying to change it for a new file or with an existing file? The option to change "Up" in the preferences only does so for new files created. You currently can't switch axis for an existing design, but the workaround is pretty easy. Just rotate the bodies to be oriented along the Z in instead of the Y-axis. As a secondary option, you can also right-click on the view-cube (in the upper righthand corner) and change the "top" view to be for the Z-axis as well. That will help the navigation feel the same going forward. Cheers, Kevin :)

Could not for the life of me figure out how to select the lines to enter 45 degrees. It looked as you selected the lower angled line as if you had clicked on it and then was dragging it towards the vertical line. Maybe its because I am using apple trackpad and you are on that uber cool mouse of yours. Just wait till this weekend when I get mine too. ha ha
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, James. Are you referring to the 45 degree dimension at 11:52? If so, after activating the sketch dimension you need to click on both the angled line (that was just sketched) and the vertical line. The order in which you select them doesn't matter. The only important thing is that you drag your mouse cursor to the middle of the two lines and click to place the dimension there. Cheers, Kevin :)
