I never got my head around waveshaping, but now it makes so much sense. Really liked some of the quick practical tips for applying it in production. Great stuff! Looking forward to your future videos :)

22:40 it’s called upwards compression. Bringing signals under threshold up instead of bringing signals over threshold down, the classic way called downwards compression. Upwards expansion is taking signals over threshold and making them louder, and downwards expansion is making signals under threshold lower, classic gating. Also, doing parallel EQ like in your rack almost always gives phase issues unless you use linear EQ.

I think it depends on the amount of amplitude and or gain applied to the cut tho which means it won’t be so bad. Low or high shelf’s don’t do as much phase issue and linear causes pre-ringing I’ve heard.
@tranquilbear31522 күн бұрын
I think if you cut with a notch or bell really wide it makes the issue sound pretty noticeable though

Watch Dan worrals series about parallel filters, I think it will open your eyes to what these 'phase issues' actually are

22:30 that's upward compression you're speaking of, expansion is the opposite of compression, when you make the dynamic range more vast instead of less.

Waveshaping is quite awesome when it comes to bass design, on fl mobile rn, messing with its wave shaper, although not much flexibility on it, its still insane

this is fantastic! thank you for also visualizing what a clipper and upward compressor do.

Love melda llugins. I use waveshaper MB for finetuning drum goodness

6:27 My guess as to why the Serum waveshaper skews/shifts the waveform is probably because it applies some amount of DC offset filtering. As for whether that’s pre- or post-processing (or both), I would assume post. As for what this does to the sound of your distorted signal, it causes no audible change. This filter is designed to attenuate frequencies well below the range of human hearing (

I've just stuck a wave shaper on some my drums and bass and gave them some adjustments and the tune sounds so much better already. Thanks for explaining it so well

Why did you side chain your mic with a long release to what’s coming out of Ableton? Makes it hard to hear when synths are playing
@kade-makes-music2 күн бұрын
@@sfleeee pretty sure my gain was just quieter than the ableton output when i recorded, will fix that in next video though

So is all saturation and distortion basically waveshaping?
@kade-makes-musicКүн бұрын
yes, they both alter the waveform by adding non-linearities to the signal which is what a waveshaper does
