The big spooky house-every neighborhood has one-that you usually pass right by with a nervous glance, that is always perfectly dark, perfectly silent, seems, tonight, different. The noise of the neighborhood fades away around you as you gaze at the ruined face of the dilapidated house. The porch light flickers on, casting an eerie light on the crumbling front steps and the overgrown path. The tire swing in the back swings like a pendulum, a little too steadily to be just the wind. Is there a dark figure moving back there in the misty woods, or is it your imagination? Your eye sweeps nervously across the tangled yard and the gravestones illuminated by anemic moonlight when-what was that? A flash of movement behind one of the broken windows, a pale face...or something like a face. From the trees, the hooting of an owl sounds like a challenge, like a warning.
