I've reached an advanced level of Mandarin Chinese and will forever be a learner. But this was what I found to be the most effective. Use the language to help others. When I started volunteering to help the Chinese in my community, the focus was no longer on myself and my inadequacies. It was all about providing support and if I would just use whatever tricks I had up my sleeve to communicate. I got to make a difference, plus my Chinese got pretty good. I'm even working as a translater now. :)

If I could relive the whole Harry Potter experience I would over and over , the movies, the feelings & how great a story it is I can’t wait to read the books I hope it brings me back to my childhood. It’s crazy because the ACOTAR series I’m reading as adult is giving me the feelings I had for Harry Potter as a kid, I remember waiting in line outside the movie theaters forever to get in!

I am learning Spanish, I got over my fear of speaking and sounding dumb by just doing a lesson a day with duolingo. I was then prepared to speak with my professor and classmates with the proper accent. A little day by day makes a huge difference.

Happy to see someone learning a language, I learned English when I was 23 years old and the first 6 months were the hardest but I can’t articulate to you the joy when I was able to listen to a video in English and understand it. Just take learning Japanese as a lifestyle and I truly agree with your tutor no one will be angry when you don’t speak their language at their level but most of them will be proud that you’re learning their language.

What i try to do when trying to improve my speaking is just narrating what I'm doing. It helps with spontaneity and you get to figure out so much vocabulary bc it's about stuff you obviously need. English isn't my first language so i can say the more you learn about your language studying behaviour the easier it'll be. For me, i only figured out my true preferences in learning a language after English, French and now Spanish. Consistency is key❤

This is just the video i needed today. I've been studying for my CPA exams and I've been stuck on one section for months. A lot of the frustrations you're facing while learning are exactly what I'm going through. "You lose self-confidence when you can't trust yourself to do what you're supposed to be doing" that really hit home. Thank you for sharing!

As someone who's pretty fluent in english but doesn't get to speak it outside of online friendships i had this huge fear of mispronouncing words over voice chat but it helped me to practice with a group whose english is also no the primary language as we all use it mainly to communicate while playing games. hearing every person's different way of speaking through accents without feeling ashamed because we're all making an effort to communicate really made me forget about my fear the longer i knew them and i still look forward to just hangout everytime i join. so i would say you can join a group of other people who are studying the same language as you to get going at first and you can all help each other get through the initial apprehension ! :D

I am 32, migrated to France last year and currently learning French. I can definitely relate to you with the self confidence and feeling like I’m taking people’s time when I try to speak but then I realised it’s all part of the process and there’s just no shortcut to it. Like you said, we just have to put in the work and practice grace. Living in a country where you have to learn the language definitely makes the learning faster. With you learning Japanese, I hope you will be able to visit Japan one day and speak Japanese with the locals! :)

Hi, I am so glad to see you studying Japanese!! I am a Japanese. Borned and raised in Japan. When I met my future American husband in Japan 30 years ago, I felt the same way as just you are feeling now. I studied English course at college, but speaking real English to American is a different story. I couldn't speak well, I was so anxious, I didn't have any confidence, I got super sweat😅 so when I speak English, I always whisper. So fear.... But one day, I changed like... It's okay to not speak English well. Because I am a Japanese. Even I speak English very weird, that's okay. Just speak up. Not whisper. No fear! I just watched lots of movies or TV shows and learned English by myself. Now I'm married to American husband for 27 years and been living in America for over 20 years. I still not speaking English well like Americans, but I really Don't mind. I can communicate, have many friends and I love reading books and watching tv shows. So no worries❤

I am so late to the video but I learned Korean (about 10 years for fun) and Italian (3 years in uni), and I still continue to learn these languages like I'm a beginner! I am also still constantly learning my own mother tongue and English now too because you just never stop learning languages! Even if you think you know them well. I just want to say that... I'm just like you! My tongue gets twisted whenever I have to speak with other people in the languages that I learn, especially with someone new or a native speaker. What I do to build that confidence though is to either keep a journal (weekly or daily, doesn't matter) just recounting my day or week in at least 1 or 2 sentences. You can go up to 3 if you have a lot to say but nothing more than that. I find that it helped me to summarise things and forces me to use existing words that I already know to describe something that I do not know the word to. For example, I want to say whale or a school but I don't know these exact vocabularies. So in English, instead, I'd say "the biggest fish in the sea" or "the place where you go to learn". When you write it this way, it kinda helps you to replicate situations in daily conversations where you're forced to say something without knowing it and without looking up those words in the dictionary (because you cannot do that in real conversations!). Something like having a conversation with yourself in writing form. It also makes you realise the vocabulary categories that you do not have much knowledge in like science or vegetables or gardening or anything really! Talk to yourself in your head too. FORCE yourself to use the language to say something while you are doing daily things like cleaning or cooking or showering. I always answer it using 5Ws and 1H questions (who, what, where, why, when and how). Sometimes I even talk to my family in Korean or Italian to while I do things like cooking or eating. They don't understand but they just listen, it helps in building that confidence in producing the language orally! Lastly, PLEASE make mistakes in conversations. Before you speak confidently in any language, I think it's also important to confidently make mistakes. Yes, confidently make mistakes. Like you know it won't be correct when you say it but you do it anyway. And if you have a speaking partner you can ask them if that is the right way to say it. It just shows that you're learning it and putting your heart into the process. You will find that you always make the same mistakes in the same areas but that is okay! Overtime, you become conscious of that. When you are conscious of the mistakes you make, you will slowly start to unlearn it (not fix but relearn the correct way). Just know that you are doing amazing!

I have learned that speaking in the formal tense of a language endears you to the native speakers. They will teach you the conversational aspects which are always changing anyway. Its just like when you meet someone who has learned to speak in a formal version of English. fwiw, I was an Army brat who became bilingual growing up overseas and later retired from the Merchant Marine, that to say I speak many languages. Good luck !

As someone who knows 4 languages and is learning a 5th, that feeling of embarrassment never goes away. Sometimes, I still mix up the languages. The best thing my husband told me (who also knows multiple) is to be confident, consistent and considerate of yourself. Learning languages is hard whether it be Japanese or ASL. I’m proud of you for continuing to learn, grow and be better. It’s difficult but definitely worth it. You got this! 💛🤍

One thing that helps me with the fear of speaking (and I live abroad) it's that the fear stems from being shunned by teachers at school, and that there words and bad teaching shouldn't live rent free in my head years later. Not speaking is stopping me from learning and making progress, and my intention is to become better (at speaking turkish), so head on, past the fear, keep pushing and say to fear: not today! You got this!!!

wow you're learning Japanese! what I found the most crucial for people to speak another language they're learning at is surround themselves with people who speak that language in order to get comfortable in speaking a desired language. At first yes, you may sound silly to them. But as time went on gradually, you'll adapt in their speaking style and intonations, it'll go smoothly from then on. you inspired me to learn Japanese too, I'm quite a fan of Anime and fond with the Japanese culture. love you for learning this, good video!

I think every nation is like that and everybody will take their time and help you with whatever you wanted to say. I can understand you because when I just moved here German is my 3rd language. I am still on A1 tho but people will be happy for you that you learn their language. My mother language is Bosnian, second language is English, 3rd language is now German. Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the book: "Wanting someone isn't the same as loving them," "The world continues to spin even when we want it to stop, especially then," and "Sometimes, the things people don't say are louder than the words that come out of their mouths."

I've been learning English since I was like 7 8, now i just turned 18. And based on my experience I would say find someone that learning your target language (obliviously in same level as you) and just chat together start with just basics. Ohhh I just woke up at that I did that etc and then go forward. In my case talking to someone who is like me is so much easier than talking to a teacher or a tutor.

After you finish all the books, you'll be able to dive into the world of Harry Potter fanfictions! And by that, I mean works that can be hundreds of thousands of words long, exploring various scenarios and what ifs. What if Harry was just a little less light? What if family trees were changed just a little bit? There's so many fanfics just waiting to be read.

I know for me I need to be better at speaking in Spanish and the one person I talk to is my mom. She’s understanding and gently corrects me when I say a word wrong or use the wrong verbiage in a sentence 😂 Anyway, I’m rooting for you to reaching your goal! ❤

I got really good at speaking english by talking to myself, I'm not kidding. I learned p young so most of the talking i was doing it with dolls and toys, and copying what other people said from videos and stuff and adding my own dialogue really helped me with pronunciation. I firmly believe you can speak a language badly but as long as you got good pronunciation you can go a long way in conversation. Speaking clearly rather than having full sentences will help you get your message across and gain confidence as you're learning more. Interview yourself in Japanese, pretend you have a podcast or have to talk about everything you did today.

I have a advice for you beautiful the thing is you know what you want to say but you get conscious so to recover that try to talk to yourself like when you are sitting alone in your home just imagine there is a person in front of you speaking in that language but also in your favoured language like English say something and think what will they reply make it feels real it will make you feel confident and it will become a kind a role play try it you will enjoy it and love you videos bye bestie you look beautiful tho in this video ❤❤❤

Listening to songs in the language you're trying to learn might also help. You'll find yourself singing the lyrics before you even realize it.

Stop the tape (visualize this) when you start with negative self talk and replace it with a positive affirmation. I suck at this. I will never learn this. STOP. I am a brave learner. I am doing the hard work, and it will pay off.
