Extremely kind of you to share your personal journey! Very inspiring! Probably Tata Institute of Fundamental Research was the last such example in India that could be compared to Bell Labs etc. The existence of a relative monopoly in industry has the side benefit that the company can allow itself to contribute to ambitious fundamental research and knowledge propogation.
