This is a very important interview, and the subsequent year and 4 months only vindicate Prof. Stanley's warnings. One key point he makes about fighting back is that trade unions are a major protection against fascism.

I read this book; excellent and very informative work, Dr. Stanley. I'm struggling with my parent's rabid support of Donald Trump. Their "Christian" church is very cult-like I'm my mind, and they are very much about telling their congregation who they should vote for. My father is a retired scientist, and also studied history at the graduate level. I'm trying to get him to read this book, to realize the cognitive dissonance he's fallen into. It's very difficult to watch my parents fall prey to this sort of horror.

The ONE mistake HRC made?!? Where do I begin?! Bernie understood and empathized with the working class. He demonstrated that DT was trying to pit one group against another. But he showed the way to unite them against the 1% , the corporations, etc. He never would have stooped to denigrating a group of (desperate) people, as HRC did with her "deplorables" comment, among others.

Thank you for the callout OP! I really dislike this guy, because he takes the centrist democrat party line, that this Trumpism/Fascism is all about racism and sexism. Of course it's about those things, but it's mainly fueled by the oligarchs stifling democracy, resulting in a disillusionment with democracy itself. What is the 'democracy' that this guy wants us to return to? One where the Clintons ship millions of black men into prisons, and millions of jobs overseas, and gut regulations on finance, when they were elected precisely to NOT do those things? The Fascists are ill-informed, because they think that this is what democracy looks like, and they don't want it; instead of realizing that democracy needs to be reinvigorated and wrested from the 0.1%
@contactkeithstack6 жыл бұрын
@@Budzilla24 all those things you are referring to as "Clinton" - 1) your conflating Hillary with Bill. 2) you aren't acknowledging that those policies are pushed when Bill Clinton was working with a Republican Congress. The Republicans have controlled congressional and state politics for 30 years. They controlled the house for a majority of Obama's presidency and they controlled majority of state govts throughout. The 2 years centrists controlled federal govt you got the ACA, the stimulus, and Wall St regulation. That doesn't fit your narrative on centrists. You may think centrists are too moderate but they are on your side, they are moving in your direction. I think many centrists are pragmatic progressives. You may think they aren't adequately ambitious or idealistic, but again, they are on your team.

While I agree with the many comments pointing out that it might be amiss to speak of HRC’s “one mistake” given her many, the nature of this “one” is the most telling with regard to our one-party national politics. Her mistake was essentially to reveal the utter truth about her (and the DNC ‘s) attitude toward the folks most often represented by the Democratic Party of the New Deal. To the New Democrats, such folks are, indeed, deplorable, as they are to ALL the smartest guys - and gals - in the room. They are uneducated, poor (or soon to be), and their kids are, frankly, best indoctrinated with ‘Murica! and served up as cannon fodder. What they are not is slick, quick, schooled in all the right Ivy League economic and political shibboleths, handy with a spreadsheet and a pc, nicely SUV’d, and most important of all, DONORS! So who needs ‘em? Watch out, Hillary, and Bill, and Barak, and Nancy and Chuck, and Don, and Paul and Mitch and....... well, you know who you are. Professor Stanley is mostly correct on the history (which I knew well already), but as one of those rotten defenders of the status quo & justifier of the elites position, he is oh so conveniently missing how it's his ilk's fault for paving the road to fascism & throwing blame places it doesn't belong as cover. I love Stanley’s assessment but it’s quite analytical and not keen about the historical interpretation that each generation undergoes within its relation to the understanding of autocratic systems and fascism. Then the question is not only what the concept of fascism entails but how it remains in its principles active even within functioning democratic societies as for these elements themselves to be able to engender a crisis that leads to the development of such autocratic systems.

I disagree public education is a facilitator of solidarity. James Loewen did his famous study of textbooks that showed how conservative students in secondary and post-secondary school can be. Education merely has the potential to present historical lessons that embolden progress. Also, accurate or true history is a misnomer. Their is only falsifiable evidence that supports a historical assumption. History is not objective, as the word True implies; its intellectually honest at its best.

Agree with this analysis.However Duterte is not an autocrat. He does not exercise unrestructed power. Nor is he homophobic. He supports trans and gay rights. He suports birth control against the Catholic Church. He rsisted the confrontation with China pressure from the US in the South China Sea. His government is fighting ful blown Islamic extremist insurgency in the south of the country. The analysis of Duterte amongst the US left is abysmal. The authoritaian and corrupt force in the Philippines is the Catholic Church.

All good, but I still don’t understand what is wrong about a strong daddy? Patriarchy is not just oppression. It could never exist if it didn’t have also a positive purpose. As much as I would desire it, the Trump movement won’t be ideologically beaten by progressive intellectuals. They tried already too hard fighting windmills, mainly: use of language and even gestures (jazz hands, lol) were seen as the central problem, not really what common folks actually worry about. Now at least 70 percent Americans reject political correctness, and the more we try culture engineering by calling for more speech codes and complicated rules for human expression and interaction between the sexes, the more the word political correctness becomes a joke. The right wing can often turn all the fine speech and all the language mangling into ropes because a big part of it is indeed an assault on common sense. And while the crowd is cheering them on - in social media - the extremists wrap their rocks in all the learned papers to through them back at us. M. Moore has a more promising approach - look for working class people to organise, and don’t worry so much about their wokeness with regards to gender and identity politics. Strong daddies who never beat their wives, and who do protect their kids and family - and that’s most men - believe it or not, must be welcome again.
