Wonderful conversation! In his discussion about death and life, I find Sir Khalid's enunciation as a validation of Hardy's thesis that neither Man , nor elements of nature , death included, is a free agent. Everything and everyone is under the spell and control of an unseen power. In ' The Subalterns' , Hardy has elaborated upon this theme. If Hardy can not be thought as a pessimist, for he believed in Milliorism , how can Khalid Sahib's vision be called pessimistic? It is to his credit that he reveals the essence of human dilemma with an eye to find potential answer to this ever illusive mystery. That in the final analysis is the best that a writer can do.
