Morandi is DEAD wrong... It wasn't Erdogan... Iran's hesitancy to timely retaliate hard against Israel during it LONG WINDOW of opportunity was its undoing... IRGC is now fatally wounded due to the collapse of Syria. Lebanon and Humas have lost critical supply routes... Why? Because Israel feeling emboldended aligned with Erdogan to topple Assad... This would NOT have happened if Iran had timely and strongly hammered Israel last month when Israel was at its weakest... It would have further sent a message to Turkey... It was a tragic day, to be sure, but as Professor Marandi points out, Syria was just a husk. With the Americans occupying all the oil and agriculture fields, there was no revenue. With Assad gone, how does that change anything? The sanctions won't be lifted, and the Americans will not leave. So what has HTS won, and how can they govern?
@santerisatama54094 күн бұрын
Americans were not and are not oocupying the agricultural lands. The local people are cultivating their own land for the good of their community. Americans just provide in that part the most professional smuggler routs, as Syrian state in general (because of the sanctions) and non-state autonomous region like DAANES specifically don't have any means to practice foreign trade by "legal" means, and smuggling is the only options. Of course systemically corrupt Americans and in that sense similar to Assad regime want their cut, but what can you do? You got to feed your family and the rest of the community, and rebuild and develop what you can, while also defending your homes against foreign invaders. Americans provide very little help in that respect, as did also Assad and Russia, but little help from whomever is better than no help at all. To say that DAANES is occupied by USA means trying deny the local Syrian peoples of DAANES their agency, their dedication to survive and build a better life and better society against all the odds. States claim that their legitimacy is based on protecting their people. Assad regime failed in protecting North-Eastern Syrians from Daesh, and left them to protect themselves. With immense cost and some tactical alliances they prevailed and created what is now called DAANES to express and serve the will of the people. May they keep on prevailing.

One of the most alarming things about Syria is that most people can't give you a cogent summary of who any member of the opposition is, what they stand for, who their allies are, or why they're fighting. The very mention of the word "Syria" throws people into a myopia that defies all historical or geopolitical context. Indeed, the nucleus of any discussion in The West is simply "Assad Must Go!" without any consideration as to what the alternative is or what regime change would mean for the Syrian people at large. Erdogan, who is still clandestinely trading with Israel, has played an active part in trying to balkanize Syria for well over a decade, yet no one is questioning why militants with links to al-Qaeda are suddenly pouring into Syria from Turkiye immediately after netanyahu threatened Assad for aiding the Lebanese resistance? Western propaganda has told you that solidarity with the Syrian people can only take the form of being adamantly against Assad. This line of thinking suffocates any space for critical thought and inquiry. Even highlighting the well-documented US/Israel support for these rebel groups is immediately misconstrued as an endorsement of the current government. Not only does this poison the discourse, it conveniently services the imperialist agenda to balkanize Syria. Those who claim to be anti-imperialist are now voicing support for the US administered occupation of Syria. QUESTION EVERYTHING! Why does IDF only bomb territory held by Assad and never the opposition? Why does the US have untouched military bases in rebel-held provinces? Why is it that the same states who are actively funding/aiding and abetting the genocide in Gaza are also feverishly pro-regime change? Why are so many fighters for the Syrian opposition foreigners?
