That doesn't seem like a very good armature. The feet should be jointed and have tie-downs in the toe sections at least. One side of each compression plate should be threaded instead of using a nut, otherwise you can't adjust the tension of the joints once the armature is embedded in the finished puppet.

You don't have to do that when you use a rig. You can use screws if your floor material allows it.
