Effective Child Therapy

Күн бұрын

Overview of Workshop: In this workshop Dr. Kasari describes how to assess joint attention and play in young children with autism. Next, she identifies ways in which clinicians can create individualized targets for intervening with a child. Lastly, she illustrates techniques for intervening on children's social communication and play skills.
Connie Kasari, Ph.D., is Professor of Education and Psychiatry at UCLA, where she conducts research on early interventions and interventions for children in their schools. Since 1990 she has been on the faculty at UCLA where she teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses. She is a founding member of the Center for Autism Research and Treatment at UCLA and has been actively involved in autism research for the past 25 years. Her current research focuses on developing targeted interventions for early social communication development in at risk infants, toddlers and preschoolers with autism, and peer relationships for school aged children with autism. She is involved in several randomized controlled trials, with her most recent work involving multi-site studies for interventions aimed at underserved and under-represented populations of children with autism. She has published widely on topics related to social, emotional, and communication development and intervention in autism. She is on the treatment advisory board of the Autism Speaks Foundation, and regularly presents to both academic and practitioner audiences locally, nationally and internationally.

I feel the child wants to touch the balloon when she is blowing it, he finds the expansion fascinating and probably the child wants to squeeze the balloon too. The child leans forward and puts his hands to touch the balloon but mom pulls him back to the chair. He is now upset . The therapist hands him over a deflated balloon and he is mad because he does not want a deflated one. So he throws it away.

Well, he should learn to blown one up himself instead oft raging. I can't stand this drama ans endless discassions Form so called experts anymore! Treat them like any other selfish child, instead of acting like they are kings oft the castle!

@@Rippenhengst He's too young to be able to blow up a balloon by himself. What might appear to be a selfish, raging child is really his communication of what he is feeling and thinking and unable to say. She wanted to see if he might attempt to blow it up. If he was curious enough to try. It may look silly or simple what they are doing but everything they do is backed up by research and science otherwise they wouldn't be doing it. They are accountable to their oath to their license and profession and to the parents. We need experts to be able to analyze every movement, etc. That's what you learn in college. Giving therapy changes this whole picture and the parents are soooo grateful and amazed.

I feel the chid wants to get off of his mums lap and is frustrated at her for holding him there. It doesn't seem natural and it seems it would be better for him to investigate the toys at his own pace and time as they were rushed with showing him. A more relaxed environment would be better. How is the child now 3 years on?

This child is communicating what he wants and doesn’t want. He is not regulated and he is being held down. By throwing away the toys, might he be saying “I don’t want to be doing this”. It looks to be that he is requesting to be released from this situation. While using this approach, does it at all matter that he is unhappy?

Yep. This is illegal in Nevada. He shouldn't be restrained. He should be allowed to leave the room. Unless he needs to be restrained to prevent imminent self harm or harm to others, he should be allowed to go anywhere that he's not in danger. This is why kids become autistic in the first place. Where is the empathy? Is this entire community tone deaf? The kid doesn't like them, and he's suffering. Not dealing with that first and foremost is clearly a lack of humanity. Be more down to earth. Manage upwards as well as downwards. Take a little extra time out of your busy day to develop an authentic connection. There is a difference between being impartial and being cold and callous. You can treat everyone the same by breaking the ice with everyone. This kind of behavior will not be reproduced by empathetic adults in nature. There's no point to the research. Any caregiver worth their dime will spend time with the parent in front of the child, first, and wait for the parent to tell the child the teacher is safe. If you don't do that, you're teaching the child to trust strangers against their better judgment. Destructive lessons with dangerous results.

@@jermsbestfriend9296 this is how kids become autistic? Lol what. This is not how autism develop. Environment cannot make a child develop autism. And he is not being kept hostage. He is fine, parent is plan ignoring his elopement by holding him and applying pressure. .

@@BossLaiiDy @Classy760 Sure, a kid don't become autistic, he/she is or not. Some people would never know there are autistics because they learn to mask it , or never encounter people like the ones we see in that video. "Authentic Connection" what a relevant expression ! How about try to understand how he see the world, instead of try to train him like a dog ?

Why are you making horrible noises in a child’s face while his mother holds his head? And then you wonder why he throws the balloon to the side? It’s because it makes a horrible noise and a lot of us can be overstimulated especially when someone is humming in our ear another is in our face and another on the side of us. You are completely overwhelming every sense this child has and expecting him to “perform” something. This video hurt my heart.

We want him to do this and that, he doesn't want to or can't. You need to change your way of assessment rather than fitting him into your way of assessing him. Throw your manual away, even the terminology of "in our lab" these beautiful children are not case studies in that respect

Why are they forcing this child to sit for long periods of time? He's a toddler!! He wants to explore and play without being forced to sit in one spot. He wanted to get up and play with the toys without being restrained on his mom's lap. How can he properly play with the blocks and all the toys in front of him if he can't even move off his mom's lap??? This is just weird. She keeps saying, "do you want a hug? Hmm? Do you want a hug?" No, he doesn't want a hug, he clearly wants you to stop restraining him on your lap! He wants to get up so he can play with the blocks! Same with the beginning of the video -- bringing in a whole table full of toys, and forcing him to sit on his mother's leg on the other end of the table and not letting him get up to go play with the toys. He's a toddler...........of course he's going to be "dysregulated" if you put toys in front of him and force him against his will to stay on your lap and not play with them!
