Professor Layton - Misthallery's many canals [Extended]

Out of all Layton games, Misthallery remains my favourite location. I find it so imaginative, especially with this music. The juxtaposed calm feeling of a world, filled with mystery, yet to be explored- but one that will unfold at your pace. A cat that naps alongside the edge of the canal all day, until its favourite villager comes by in his gondola and gives it a freshly caught fish. Kids running and playing along the streets, and one harmlessly falls in the canal. This is a regular occurrence. Each parent has a story of their kid coming home soaking wet, head to toe, knowing exactly what happened to them. They are always prepared for it- it also happens a lot to those coming home from bars late at night. The cold, foggy morning grows from pitch black to orange as the sun rises and reflects off of the constant fog, until eventually, it becomes day. Not all of the fog has lifted, but you can see the baby blue sky through it. Even the driest, draftiest farmhouse is humid enough thanks to the canals and fog. The small-town, isolated from the city, yet very communal land of Misthallery will always be in my heart.

I quite like the night themes and the black market too, and I understand why you like Misthallery so much. I always felt that this track was a small bit ominous, especially at 1:16. The Spectre is approaching and could strike at any minute. I’m glad this was my first Layton experience, and it sure gave me a good introduction to the series. Spectre’s Call will always have a special spot for my first Layton experience, and most possibly the best one.

@@tsuzyx9672 The silent & cold morning air of Misthallery is broken only by the quiet rushing of water through the town’s canals. By sunrise, the seagulls and pigeons that have made the town their home begin their calls and awaken the villagers. Sometimes, the stray cat who is visited daily by the fisherman in his gondola will already have his meal caught from last night’s mouse chase, in which case the fisherman gives the cat two fish, for bringing him a “gift” and for taking care of some vermin. A few months in to this daily habit, one of the other stray cats discovered this routine with the fisherman, and so he began feeding them each. Word of this routine spread around the cat community quickly, and soon enough, the fisherman began feeding 13 stray cats daily, having adopted the first two he ever fed. He started taking them fishing, giving them his first two catches of the day and saving the next 13. The farmer, having discovered this routine on a morning walk, became inspired and began to feed his spare corn to the ducks in the canal behind his house. One time, two 17 year olds from London had heard about the town’s water system and brought a small motor boat to attempt to sail through it. They got about one third into the town, before a pipe sticking out from the bottom of the canal struck their boat. They were launched so high that they actually landed on the road above the canal, and their boat was stuck inside the culvert for over a week. It was as effective as an entire road being closed as nobody could get through, and even affected the timing of the fisherman’s daily cat feeding. They were promptly charged and posted for bail, but the news made national headlines and gave the town a moment of notoriety. Most citizens have a story about that day, even if they didn’t see the event. One local nutjob proclaimed the waters of the canal were the purifying waters of the fountain of youth, and solely began drinking, cooking, showering, and cleaning with the canal water. He ended up contracting Hepatitis A but thankfully survived, and the experienced caused him to never set foot in a gondola again. There is an odd facet of the community in that nobody locks their house doors overnight- as the paperboy each morning has begun placing the papers inside people’s homes, after one too many complained of soggy, illegible papers being left out in the fog. Some residents built mailboxes in protest, to which the paperboy adhered to, but even the most expensive one could not protect the news from the elements. A year later, you could tell where an unpleasant neighbour lived based on if they had a mailbox. Most citizens of Misthallery enjoy the morning fog with a hot cup of coffee, meant to offset the perpetual damp cold of the town.

I said once and I will say again, I want to live in Misthallery. Despite all the problems in that town, the atmosphere and vibe is so amazing that gives me so much joy!
