I don’t think Mark revered this film enough. It is a truly beautiful piece of cinema. Finely crafted, beautifully written, and tenderly acted. I loved it so much I cried. Straight into my top 20 for sure.

The exact details may be contested but it’s pretty well established that this IS the origin and inspiration for Wonder Woman. I wouldn’t call that contested.

This was more of a indie movie than mainstream in America. I think I only say two or three trailers on television before it was released I believe it was a month ago. It was one of those movies if blinked you missed it and will have to wait for it to come out on DVD.

Jill Lepore's novel the secret history of wonder woman is very good. How does this film compare to that book?

Not very well, I'd say. Left out a TON of the eccentricity of Marston's personality, and makes some broad generalizations about them having a three-way relationship, while the book made it very clear that Bryne was Marston's mistress. Let me put it this way, the writer/director has gone on record saying she didn't do any research (specifically didn't interview any of the family members) because she wanted her own interpretation of the story, and that clearly shows throughout the film.

I'm glad you reviewed this fine film. It was fun and enlightening about America's prudishness, misogyny, and the creation of Wonder Woman. Given what is happening in Trump era America it seems possible that all of the gains women made 100 years ago could be lost. We need Wonder Women. I'm reading Jill Lepore's 'The Secret History of Wonder Woman' which is an excellent study of the push for the rights of women.

Your comment underscores the crucial difference that Wonder Woman and Professor Marston exist as opposed to say Saving Private Ryan (which existed to glorify the slaughter at Normandy.) I suppose your reference to the "beaches of Normandy" suggests that the MEN who gave their lives to kill and be killed by MEN who had nothing to gain or lose at Normandy was glorious. They were tools. In what war have you recently been willing to let yourself be slaughtered?

Your suggestion is similar to replies to the demand for equal rights and the end of discrimination based on gender. I suppose the advantages you speak about include no right to vote, speak and campuses, no reproductive rights, the right to be jailed and force fed for protesting the lack of the above rights... The list could well go on. Women gained many of those through work and now about 100 years later they are in danger of losing some of those back to Neanderthals running things this trumpian era. I think we basically disagree and I agree to disagree and I don't think it's worth any further efforts to continue this dialogue.
