On this episode of 'The Western Spirit', we spoke with renowned Historian professor Niall Ferguson on a wide range of critical issues.
Amongst the topics discussed were Ferguson's views on Jews and their contributions to western culture, the current rise of antisemitism, the connection between the elite universities and intellectuals in Germany and the Holocaust, and his fear we are headed in a similar direction today.
We also delved into why he believes faith is important to the well being of any society, and took a dive into Nial's views on 'wokeness' and its dangers, as well his hopes for the future.

He should be mandatory listening to for all. Yes you can disagree with him but his arguments are very very well constructed. And by seeing his point of view you realize that you’ve been educated - it’s as simple as that.

I live in Ireland and on the morning of Oct 7th, I came home after working night duty. I was upset over the videos I had watched on X on my commute and after bumping into a friend, who I had regarded as an intelligent and decent person, I expressed as much. Immediately after conveying my horror at what had happened I was met with a dark look and then chastised for supporting "colonialism". This was not weeks later after the reprisals had begun, but that morning. I will never forget that.

I was always fascinated by the anti-semitism of the Irish. For some reason, they identify with the Palestinians, which is bizarre. I understand their troubled relationship with England is the root of all that, but their take on Israel/Palestine is just ignorant. Colonialism? How about the colonialism of the Arab Islamism that took over the Levant and slaughtered the indigenous Christians, Druze, Phoenicians, etc. rendering them into minorities in their own land? It’s just insane.
@PrincipledUncertainty

@cliomuse1206 Indeed. Who do people think created the state of Israel? Jerusalem was not constructed by the Arabs. I am struggling to think of a population who have a longer claim to their territory. The Assyrians and Carthaginians are long gone. No Elaine's or Hittites still survive, only the Jews held on, despite the world's best efforts. Even the English are mostly German or viking "colonisers." The Islamic empire is the last man standing and one that has erased countless wonderful cultures that will never return. The Pelestinians are engaging in bottom-up asymmetrical warfare, an almost impossible strategy to overcome in the era of mass media. Unless the more powerful party is almost universally despised and no longer has anything to lose. I take no joy in it, but Hamas just learnt that throwing all your chips in can have terrible consequences.

I'm a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. And I'm also philo-Semitic. As a native English speaker who has dabbled in learning about half a dozen languages, I've never been bowled over by the sense that I was learning about long-lost cousins like I did studying Hebrew. For the 5 semesters I studied it, I felt like I was learning about my family. I can't explain it. As far as I've looked, I don't have any recent Jewish ancestors (going back to roughly about the 1700s), and I don't have any known family living in Israel, but I can't help loving a people, a religion, a culture, a country that give me such a sense of family connection.

War is as natural to humans as peace. Technology may have evolved, but the same fears, anxieties, hatreds are still with us ready to be kindled by those who want to and know how. Those people will always try to gain power and sometimes succeed. Many of the people shouting the loudest for love, peace, justice, equality are the most consumed by hate, anger, resentment, intolerance and are easily manipulated. Once movements gain enough momentum they become unstoppable and will play out to their inevitable conclusion. Unless we remember these the consequences will be tragic.

Strange how safe space is not a place where it is safe to try out risky ideas. The idea that speech is violence is also curious because in a sense silence is violence because when views cannot be expressed it does not stop them being held amongst like minded groups who will reinforce their own views in opposition to other groups which becomes tribal. Hopefully the new Austin University will promote homeostasis which is how things evolve. Society inevitably generates changes which create imbalance. Naturally there will be a reaction that will find a new balance. Authoritarian controls actually stop the balance naturally resetting which holds forces in unresolved opposition until things collapse when negative consequences become overwhelming.

I don't think anyone truly has the right to claim full scope of understanding regarding theatres of conflict unless on the ground and even then, in theatre there is always conflict of opinion regarding scale and accuracy of events. Only one professor I know can truly give valid accuracy on warfare and that is Professor Bentine whom has vast knowledge for his capability to record events from a hidden dimension. This has he able to witness events to the full and because of his knowledge of THz Frequencies has even been able to rescue victims and witness of warfare whom have been able to purvey better account of events through battle re-enactments, on a table top sandpit. There has been some consternation on retrieving the rescued combatants from the other frequency but together with BBC Video and Audio Technology and the capability to follow footprints and explosions on the tabletop sandpit we are now able to experience the full horrors of conflict. Together with the dismissal of the BBC TV License fee a new TGHz frequency will enable us to id those rescued. We can only pray!

Consider reading Friedrich Hayek, “The Intellectuals and Socialism” where he described them as “professional secondhand dealers in ideas.” Ferguson makes this pretty clear, as well. So does Thomas Sowell throughout his writings - he gave them the mock title, “the anointed.” Conclusion: The intellectuals are frequently biased, collectivist, even shameless actors.

There is a problem with atheism, it is simply negative and doesn't provide anything positive to believe in. The problem with theism is not its specific conclusions, but the method employed as a means. The bad aspects of religion are the use of the means of faith as a method used in relation to others, to the world extern to the self. One can have self-confidence based on faith, but to use faith as a means of knowing external reality, or as a guide for when to use force against others, externalizes the harm. Humanism doesn't necessarily negate religion, instead proposes a range of things appropriate to human nature. To say that morality must be faith-based, invites disaster such as can be seen in Afghanistan and the Soviet Union, both based on faith applied socially. Morality was certainly practiced before religion evolved to the point where it is today. Stoicism certainly provides a guide to morality, without the necessity of faith. While faith can be used to justify immorality.

“Ludicrous to characterise Israel as the oppressor and the Palestinians as the oppressed.” Tells you all you need to know about Ferguson’s perspective. Why is it so hard for the state of Israel to look at itself and see what it has become? There was immense pain caused on Oct 7th AND there is immense pain occurring day by day in Gaza. The only way to a lasting peace is for both sides to open their hearts to really feel the pain of the other. And in that process realise the common humanity that unites all the people of this land. Domination and Apartheid is not a long term solution to this crisis.

The old community of Jews that used to live in Gaza perished in Islamist riots of 1929, concurrent with dozens of other communities, the massacre in Hebron was documented, you can see the photos of that ISIS style massacre in archives of the NYT. Photos like the gut churning photos of the massacre of Oct. 7 only in black and white. *In 1929 the massacres were committed mostly by mobs. 1929 is 19 years before the reinstitution of Israel, 38 years before Israel took Gaza strip from Egypt, 37 years before the process of appropriating the title Palestinians by Arabs has even started.

I have read several books by Niall Ferguson and am therefore unsurprised by his arguments here. He is an extremely useful idiot for the cause he supports. I do think however that there are two issues here. What he has to say about the state of affairs on anglophone campuses is supported by everything I read and a cause for despair. Denying however that settlers in the West Bank are not settlers and not colonialist is not something i would expect of an enlightened Scot.

The charge that most modern Jews are converts is likewise completely detached from reality. Judaism has never been a proselytizing religion, and actively discourages people wishing to convert. Mainly because according to Judaism, a heavenly reward is NOT limited to Jews only. Any non-Jew can go to heaven, and the bar for doing so is A LOT LOWER than for Jews. Basically if you're a decent human being and a monotheist of any kind, you're in.

Why were Albigenses, Anabaptists, Mennonites, Calvinists, Puritans, Mormons, Huguenots, Bogomils, Amish, Mormons all persecuted? And that's just a partial list. When I listen to this conversation I actually get a little bit angry at Jews. The Palestinian marches irritate the hell out of me but Jews have overwhelmingly supported the immigration of these people into the country, how dare they now complain. Individually to support mass immigration in every large Jewish group supports it and even advocates for it. And I’m not really sympathetic about the Jewish students, where were the Jews with their perches of influence When whole university courses Focusing on erasing whiteness in solely focused on vilifying white people. How many wealthy donors withdrew funding then? While I certainly don’t wish any harm to jews, i’m having problems being sympathetic to their pain because too many of them in positions of influence have created these problems and then naïvely thought that they were in a special category of white. Now they know.

Even more disingenuous is to address the claim of settler colonialism as being invalid by ignoring the Arab indigenous population being in the 90% majority 100 years ago and at 1948 reduced to 70% then that majority being forcibly removed by Israel the occupying authority.. Then wind forward to today half of greater Israel's population now lives in apartheid like conditions.Thinking that can be ignored when there is no better example of settler colonialism and that something else is the foundation to Oct 7 borders on bizzare. Thinking bombing Gaza into the stone age has no consequences is lunacy. The greatest threat to Israel is itself.
