You are an angel. I've been trying to study my chem book for over 2 hours now and wanted to cry and you explained it so much better than an entire chapter in less than 6 minutes you sweet beautiful man.

Great Video but I feel it should be mentioned that the chemical shifts described in the video are only correct for achiral solvens. In chiral solvens Enantiotopic groups will also have a diffrent chemical shift.

Is this correct: homotopic if no original chiral center and no new chiral center created when switching one of the hydrogens for a variable group, enantiotopic if no original chiral center but a new chiral center is created through replacement test, and diasteriotopic if there was original chiral center and doing the replacement test yields a new chiral center? and homotopic if there was an original chiral center but no new chiral center is created through replacement?

Im not sure if i just missed it but you should say that if a CH2 lies on a C2 axis they are also homotopic

what will happen if there's a carbon carbon double bond? For example, 2-methyl-2-butene.. an example in our book says that changing the H (on the methyl groups) make them diasterotopic.

The molecule have no chirality center initially right? I dont get it T_T does it have something to do with E and Z?

@davidbowler41774 жыл бұрын
The only difference between diastarotopic vs. enatiotopic is that diastarotopic has 2 chiral centers.
@hej28004 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your amazing explanation of the principles! In the example, however, I didn't quite understand how it is that the two pairs of H below the keto group are diastereotopic. is the one meta to the keto group diastereotopic because of the relative positioning to the lone H at the bridge head? is the one ortho to the keto group also related to the lone H? or some other location? I hope you see my question!
@Patrick-gw1vp4 жыл бұрын
There is an existing chiral centre in the molecule. Changing any of those pairs of protons you are asking about will introduce a new chiral centre and therefore a diastereomer. As a result, they are diastereotopic protons.
@israelrobinson75045 жыл бұрын
What if something becomes a diastereogmer after you do the replacement test? Something such as a cyclic structure.
