Here’s a question. If you found out one of your favorite bands intentionally tried to sell out, would you like them less? Or would it even matter? Well, today’s band Journey was accused of selling out by an ex-band member, who said they cared more about the money than the music. After just one commercial album he quit. And I’m sure he’d have hated the next album Evolution even more since it featured the undeniable mainstream breakout single: Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’. One of the most gut-wrenching songs of its day… this track is all about how this lead singer Steve Perry’s girl cheated on him right in front of his face. And it became so popular that it served as the catalyst for a decades-long career of worldwide superstardom… Sell-outs or savvy rockers. Either way, I don’t think you could love Journey’s music any less. Steve Perry and Neal Schon! The story is coming up… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. if you remember flipping through the TV guide to figure out when your favorite show came on TV, you’ll dig this channel of deep musical nostalgia… Make sure to subscribe below right now. I promise that you are going to love this channel. We also have a Patreon you'll want to check out.
I’m excited to return to another one of my favorite shows that we do on this channel. It’s called Breakthrough. In this show, we break down songs, albums, or events that kicked open the door to an artist or band’s career and gave them the momentum to rocket to long-term success. On today’s episode, we’re fearing Journey and their heartbreak classic Lovin’, Touchin. Squeezin’.
But you know what, Journey’s breakout moment really occurred over the space of two albums. Kind of unusual. It began with their multiplatinum 1978 album Infinity… but strangely that record didn’t have a hit single on the radio. So even with a commercially successful album in their pocket, Journey’s breakout really wasn’t complete until they released Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’ from their next album, 1979’s Evolution. That’s when this band really hit the big time. I’ll explain more as we get into the story. So let’s get going.
Journey was formed in 1973 in San Francisco, and was comprised of by ex-Santana members Neal Schon on guitar and Gregg Rolie on keyboard and vocals… as well as bassist Ross Valory, guitarist George Tickner, and drummer Prairie Prince. Initially going by the name the Golden Gate Rhythm Section, the band would rename themselves Journey by New Year’s Eve
1973, when they debuted at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom.
The first of Journey's long list of line-up changes came in February 1974 when drummer Prairie Prince returned to his old band, The Tubes. He was replaced by Aynsley Dunbar. This early iteration of Journey specialized in jazz-rock, complete with lengthy and improvised solo spots. Vocals and lyrics took a backseat to the instrumentality, just like things had been in Santana. Journey signed with Columbia Records in the fall of 1974, and then released their self-titled debut on April 1, 1975. It would sell a modest 100,000 copies. Then after a lengthy US tour aimed to generate more exposure, guitarist George Tickner left the band to attend Stanford Medical School.

I agree, Arnel is doing a good job but it sure isn't Journey to me and I'd have no interest in seeing that band with that line-up. I'd have more respect if they totally reinvented themselves like AC/DC did after Bon passed, then you could tolerate the older songs being done by their new singer, but not replacing the lead singer with a wannabe copy of Perry just to carry on like nothing is different and like Perry is still the lead singer. As good as Arnel may be, it was a bad and totally ridiculous and desperate way for the actual band to go, they basically screamed out to The World that they're nothing without Steve Perry😮

The concert in 2005 was good, but time, new responsibilities, and Steve Perry not on the stage--well no one was talking about it the following week. And the mistress that I chased for years was now in the arms of another enjoying the "lovini, touchin', squeezin'". The songs of our youth, enjoying life, drinking beer, telling lies and making memories. Love your channel. Semper Fi

I had just graduated high school at the age of 17 when Journey went HUGE in 1979. I hadn’t really listened to their music up until that point. Later, I DID have the opportunity to attend that concert you speak of prior to it being shut down. That was also the time I started my professional career as a Legal Assist. to the Vice President of a highly acclaimed hotel chain. I recall a secretary who sat outside of my office who was constantly playing Journey at her desk. I know I loved the music but, couldn’t place the name. One day I finally asked her who that band was….”Journey. Haven’t you ever listened to them😱?” I was also a professional dancer at the time (think ‘dancing with the stars.) so, I listened to all types of music genre’s. Back in that day, vinyls were all that was available. I went and purchased the latest (at that time) Journey album and, it became a cherished favorite❣️

I remember seeing Journey my first concert! My big brother and his best friend got permission to take "baby sister" to see them. I had no idea who I was going to see, just excited to go to a "live concert". I remember hearing their opening song and seeing this handsome man running around flipping his waist-length hair with the voice of an angel. I said to myself (being Native American), "Is he Native??!!!" Will never forget it. Crisp, clear, strong, INCREDIBLE voice and amazingly long beautiful hair!

I went to a Journey consert a few weeks back. My husband had bought the tickets to surprise me. I never had any interest in attending a concert without Steve Perry. I was right... it just wasn't the same. Kudos for the 'new' singer... he did an excellent job. But it just wasn't Journey.

Funny how Aynsley Dunbar would go on to play with another band that shifted its sound to get more commercial success - Whitesnake. And he played on what is considered their most commercially successful album - Whitesnake (1987). That's right! "Mr. Integrity" played drums on mega-hit 'Here I Go Again' - a redux of an earlier Whitesnake song that was intentionally rejiggered to be more commercially accessible. 🤣🤣

I am lucky enough to have been a Journey fan from the 70s and 80s. I grew up on in the SF Bay Area going to concerts. From small venues to Day on the Green(s). So many great memories seeing Journey and other groups in their prime. My first concert KISS in 1977 my ticket was $8.50 at the SF Cowpalace. My last concert was The Rolling Stones my ticket was $650 (face value) in 2005. My ticket was comped by an executive working for a tour sponsor.

Thanks, that really brought a smile to my face: "They didn't sell out... Everyone else just bought in." In the best way, they bought in. I can't even imagine my life if I hadn't gone to see them in November 1981 at the Los Angeles Forum at 15. I had no idea what I was in for that night. Steve Perry's singing had my jaw dropped to the floor (particularly by the time they played "Mother Father"). I was in total bliss by the end and I couldn't be more grateful for the positivity they brought to my life. I'm still smiling right now. ❤️😁😁😁😁❤️

I only stumbled across them in 1981 with Escape and then Frontiers was next and both ablums blew me away. I was a rock drummer of a local band when I was in high school and really enjoyed Steve Smith's drumming, especially live in concert. I only heard Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin several years later and liked it, but not as much as their 80's stuff. But I could hear how it and others on the Evolution LP laid the foundation for what was yet to come and I totally agree with you that theirs one of the best Greatest Hits album ever.

Wheel in the sky and Lights are my all time favorite Journey songs. The term “sell out” applies to changing everything about the band’s style to meet the pop chart criteria. I don’t think they ever sold out. Their sound changed and grew, but they were always recognizable.

When I seen Steve Perry’s solo tour at pantages theatre, he said he came home from a tour to finally meet up with his girlfriend. He said that he pulled up and seen another car in the driveway and he seen her being with another man through the window of the house. He drove away distraught and crying. He said he pulled over in his car and wrote most of the lyrics. So sad to hear him tell this story. He couldn’t wait to get home to her and he discovered this.

In 2006 I started helping to raise my sister's children after she passed. Her youngest was 11 y/o. I had a CD carrier of 200 albums. When my nephew would ride in my car, I let him pick the music. At first, he didn't care what we listened to, but after he heard "Journey's Greatest Hits" that's all he wanted to hear, every time. When he got old enough to have his own car, just before he drove off by himself for the first time, I gave him the CD.

Steve Perry use to go to the lounge where Journey played. (Keyword Lounge) They were a Jazz Fusion band. Steve said they were amazing, the best band he had ever heard. Steve got hooked up with Journey and they went a different direction. Unfortunately Steve Perry said he never felt part of Journey. I don’t think anyone would disagree that Steve Perry is Journey. I was lucky to see Journey live in 1986. I was blown away, I had never heard anyone sound so good live. Do I sound like a dad by saying “How did we go from Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’ to W.A.P. Or a guy yelling Gucci Gang for 3 minutes?” Btw, it’s great to talk with other Journey fans!!!

I went to the Journey concert while visiting a friend in Chicago in 1986 for the Raised on Radio tour . We had dead center seats in the back 10 rows up . Journey played for almost 2 hours of HIT after HIT . When Steve Perry came out for the 3rd encore , people were electrified from the show and we’re all wondering “ what could they POSSIBLY play next ? ? “ But alas , Steve Perry said “ well Chicago, we have one more for you and your hometown friend ( from Evanston ) Jonathan Cain is gonna start this one off “ Getting lost in the shuffle of a 2 hour Hit after Hit show , J Cain proceeded to play the opening notes of FAITHFULLY . The place went MENTAL . FULL BLOWN RAPTURE . Girls were crying, men were hugging and high - five-ing . Hail to the Commander -In - Chief of arena rock n roll , Steve Perry . Hands down , the ABSOLUTE BEST 🙏

Just the thought of that made my heart feel the love I had for their music and goosebumps as if I were there. You were very fortunate to have been there. I had the privilege of seeing the band 38 Special a few years ago. I had no idea the feeling and emotions that would hit me during that concert. The memories of their music were flashing before my eyes. It felt like I was in a magic time machine. My 60 year old body felt 18 again for those two hours of entertainment. I didn't want the concert to end. It felt so good to sing and be with other people who were loving the show as much as I was. I wish I could experience that feeling at least once a month. I graduated in 1980. So I was lucky to be able to enjoy the greatest era of music as a young adult. 😊. That was the last era of music I liked and still the only era of music I listen to till this day. All of my CD's are the 80 rock era. 😎
