The ringing bells, synths, crashing sounds are so dramatic and wonderful. To me it symbolises you remembering the bells ringing on your wedding day but today it is raining and stormy with thunder crashing over the top of your memory because you are no longer together. That's what the song is about - memories, and all the things that mean nothing to anybody else but remind us of something good we used to have. You walk past a cafe and remember that's where you used to dance together. You hear a bell chime and you remember your wedding day.

I actually knew this was a cover before. You know, Burt Bacharach wrote the song, and someone whose name I do not remember recorded it in the early 60s. ETA: The person in question was Sandie Shaw. And that was a cover. Dionne Warwick did the original.

On one hand I feel the same way, but at the same time when it came out, unless you were a fan of Dionne Warwick, or bought the album and read the credits, how would you know? I doubt many DJs introduced the song as a Dionne Warwick remake.

I knew this was a cover only because I remember hearing the Dionne Warwick and RB Greaves versions on the radio. But I didn't know until recently that the Soft Cell version of "Tainted Love" was also a cover; it was Gloria Jones, the American soul singer who later became Marc Bolan's girlfriend, that did the original in 1964.

@@ProfessorofRock The sound recreating a muted glass bottle tap was just genius as a hook for the later verse. The extended version of Junior's Mama Used To Say also used the sound of clanging on bottles to a great effect. The version without that sound feels lacking.

I was a HUGE Naked eyes fan, and still am. I painted a recreation of the album cover in art class and it won a contest, actually. I played my 2 tapes out so bad I had to buy the LPs. Finally, when a hits CD came out it helped me soothe my longing for their brilliant music. Ultimately, before iTunes was a thing, I was able to compile all the songs & B-sides from both their albums on CD into a converted playlist. I waited for ONE song "Once Is Enough" to be released. Finally, it came out on an oddities compilation called "Everything and More" & I was complete. That CD is long out of print now, I believe. It took me YEARS to do this 2 album compilation..! 😄

I was familiar with the Dionne Warwick version of ASTTRM and was 'meh'. But the first time i heard Naked Eyes version, that wild Tubular Bells wall of sound lit me up and made my hair stand on end and gave me goose bumps! And guess what, it still does!! I have a memory of this song coming on the radio and a few of us were in the car after a wild night out club hopping and we sang it to the top of our lungs! It was an amazing night capped with the coolest song! I saw Naked Eyes in concert just a few years ago with an combination of other cool bands like Animotion, Flock of Seagulls, Gene Loves Jezabel, When In Rome, Wang Chung and it was awesome!!! Mixed tapes... usually something I'd put on one for myself, not for a sweetheart because the nature of this song is melancholy and not something i'd include for someone i was in like with. This version of the song is the best and it's timeless.

Great interview! I was fortunate to have a mother who loved all kinds of music and loved to dance. Exploring her record collection opened me up to music running from the 1920s on up, including jazz, swing, blues, rock, pop, country, bluegrass, folk, calypso, movie soundtracks and various soloists. My mixed tapes were a hodge-podge of the above, most often spanning several decades of music per tape. To say the least, my peers thought me a little strange. Although mom was born at the beginning of the Depression, she enjoyed varied musical styles and artists until she passed away in 1997. I will be forever grateful to her for allowing me the freedom to pursue my own tastes in music.

For my money, no matter what Phil Collins did with “You Can’t Hurry Love”, the Supremes original will always be the superior version.

Really nice interview. I've got to be honest, I've never heard of "Naked Eyes" but the guy you interviewed was very well spoken and very interesting to listen to.

Ha! Same here. I pretty much gave up on most music by the late '70s, but it is interesting to hear guys like this so many years after the fact.

That summer was an incredible breakthrough for pop music. I was in Bath once in my life and it was the summer of '83. I had no idea about them being from Bath until now.

Along with the Motels “Only The Lonely”, my favorite 80’s pop song! Love it…still gives me chills every time I hear it!

I was in 6th grade when this came out and the synth sound really stood out to me and it was stuck in my head. I remember first thinking it was Devo til the vocals came in. Had no clue it was a remake til now.

I can see how you thought it sounded like Devo!

I love this remake! I had Dionne Warwick’s album which included this song, so I knew the song the first time I heard Naked Eyes’ version. It was so cool to sing along with a song the first time I heard it! None of my friends knew it was a cover, until I told them, so it was just a cool experience all around. It’s my favorite version of this song, for sure!

Whoa; I didn't know this was a remake / rearrangement. Fantastic song. Interesting that older hits got such solid rearrangements.
@benw99492 жыл бұрын
I remember we got some more direct nostalgic covers from Phil Collins, Huey Lewis and the News, and The Rolling Stones with David Bowie. These sounded great. Other rearrangements of older classics were adventurous and sometimes improved on the originals, or were so different that they stodd on their own alongside the originals. That's a real strength of music, to allow reinterpretations or revivals that spice it up and add something new, or bring a classic to a new audience, whether only subtly updated, or rearranged to make it both old and brand new. Sometimes even concurrent covers by different artists can do that, such as All Along the Watchtower, with Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix both doing their own things, and then Bear McCreary doing a kick-butt rearrangement recently.

This remake is pure masterpiece! So different so good! First time I heard it reminded me of the movie CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE 3RD KIND.

late to this, but I got that same LP in my collection. They made a serious impression on me back then; I love all the songs they did, with greater and lesser, but Naked Eyes was awesome, and I wish they'd done more!

I grew up in the center of northern Montana farmland from the late, late 60s, through the mid 80s, so I wasn't really familiar with much rock until around 77 or so. I loved the Naked Eyes' version. I don't really feel that old until I think about 1982 being 40 years ago now. Wish our culture could go back to it.

Those electric drums are the sound of the 80s for me.

Flock, Dolby, League were my favorite bands back then that had electronic drums or tracking beats.

WOW! I didn't know that Always Something There To Remind Me was a cover! I knew about the others, including Soft Cell doing Where Did Our Love Go by The Supremes, as a segue with Tainted Love. Also,I THINK Harry Belafonte did Mary's Boy Child in the original Carribian style, before Boney M came out with their version. ETA: I've never heard the original to the Naked Eyes version so, I've always loved that one. It also was on every mix tape along with Something About You (Level 42), Alive And Kicking (Simple Minds), 2 Golden Earring songs (Radar Love and Twilight Zone), She Sells Sanctuary (The Cult), various Tears For Fears songs (Mostly from The Hurting), Human League, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Siouxsie And The Banshees, John Waite's Missing You, and usually my all time favorite guilty pleasure song from the 80s Hey Mickey, by Toni Basil as the last song on the B side of the 90 minute cassette. There were plenty of others which I tried to do by genre but, those were my main Go To songs/bands/singers. Thanks for reading! Much Love, Professor!😘😘💖💖👍👍🌹🌹⭐⭐

I really liked all the hit songs but my all time favorite *Naked Eyes* song is _When The Lights Go Out_ and several years ago realized there was a classic video for it that I had never seen before. Great stuff for sure. The video adds that creaking door sound that the radio version did not have.

My favorite track was the third single " When The Light Go Out " which is a very underrated track from the fantastic debut of Naked Eyes.

Old as I am, this is still the only version I had ever heard. It is one of my favorites, top 100 anyway. It has a neat sound and is very upbeat. Until today though, I could not have told you what band made it. Probably by next week I will forget again. What was it? Cutting Crew? Hughes Corporation?
