Awww professor Didicher! I took a class with her, she was the sweetest and kindest! She also advocated for the quiet ones in the class to participate more, by trying her best to create a safe space for everyone!

It seems like the Profs hand picked their bad reviews. I think it would have been more comical if they were just given the bad review without any prior knowledge of what was written.

Most "mean" reviews wouldn't be particularly funny. I guess whoever was filming this could've combed through them for each person and picked one out for them that would be, but would that really have added anything?
@warrenorcullo6312
@warrenorcullo6312 10 жыл бұрын
I agree, hand picked, but something they've never read. I think it would have added a natural element of surprise for the Profs. I thought it was funny for some celebrities who were on Kimmel's "Celebrities reading mean tweets" were surprised.

You want an easy grade? Go to a private school. SFU is one of the only institutions in North America has which *doesn't* have a grade inflation problem. Mean GPA has been the same (+/-3%) since the university was founded, with slight deflation in the last few years, and there's no reason to expect that to change.

Nope, most students don't care about an easy grade - they care about a world where scholarships. internships, job opportunities, reference letters, grad school, and their future depend on a number or a letter slapped onto a report card which tell absolutely nothing about the person themselves. But by all means, think that the problem is the students, and not how education is built which drives them to act that way.

Tenure is given to top notch Professors who have worked so hard through years of education, then years of academic service. Their academic ladder is not set up to reward teaching. Professors get tenure based almost exclusively on their research, how much they publish, and the research dollars they pull in. These Professors have sacrificed other areas of their lives to do so. Their primary goal is their intellectual contribution to humanity, engineering, whatever their field of study is. Some of these professors care about teaching. Some don't care about it, and they shouldn't care about it: their research is far more important. Unfortunately these Professors are not "taught how to teach", either.Students who feel they are entitled to these top notch Professors' time are mistaken. Rather, they are lucky to get exposure at all to someone so committed to their field of research. Often, most of the students want everything fed to them. Real education, real learning, doesn't work that way. If it is "good teaching" students want, as opposed to cracking the textbook, doing the work, and asking questions until they "get it", then they should go to a technical college or trade school, where no research is done. Students should go to a technical college if they want to learn a trade. They should go to university to learn that education is not spoon fed, but must be worked for. Einstein had one outfit that he wore every day because he didn't want to bother with thinking about clothes

Though I am not SFU alumni, I went through everyone of these professors' ratings on RateMyProfessor.com and found most of them to be adequate in terms of quality, although they demonstrated hardness with assessing material, which I would considerate appropriate and reasonable since these are university courses. One the reviews read by Stephen Collis dates back to December 2005, which way out of date since it is now 2014. I would not consider that relevant anymore. RateMyProfessor is supposed to be a helpful website as it can be used as a guiding principle to help students determine which professors are most/least preferred when registering for courses. I always looked at this way, students are not earning a significant income in order to attend post-secondary and registering for course under these professors is an investment into their future, therefore they have a right to know what the critical consensus of a particular instructor's quality is like. Unfortunately, RateMyProfessor has major accuracy issues as students have a tendency to rate based on anger and relay their frustration through incoherence to others (also the issue stems from lack of opinions as the cite is ordeal to right reviews on). Two examples include one instructor I had with a pretty disappointing rating when he was actually a likable, good instructor (and all the students who were in my class would agree), while another instructor had a middle-of-road quality rating and his teaching capabilities were dreadful beyond description, for which I appealed my grade in the end. RateMyProfessor is one of these websites to be weary of, but should not be entirely dismissed as it had in turn helped my schedules through post-secondary despite several reservations.

Good to have a laugh over it. These sorts of evaluations shouldn't be allowed; its the full-out consumer model of education and the global teens hate that anyways.
@RickHenderson
@RickHenderson 10 жыл бұрын
Good point Brenda. And these sorts of evaluations aren't allowed. No professor or school takes RateMyProf seriously, so the only people paying any attention are students. I have heard of a few people using it specifically in their class, but since the majority of reviews are people complaining it is already a losing battle.
@RickHenderson
@RickHenderson 10 жыл бұрын
***** Well, no, it isn't the whole point. The point of a rating system is to equally evaluate good and bad performers (to hopefully improve performance). The majority of RateMyProf raters are complainers, so the majority of ratings are one-sided and don't accurately reflect balanced ratings.

1:04 Bryans relatives taught me in the 90's. Most of them couldn't explain anything, even if their life depended on it. Thank your lucky starts that you did not go to school in the 90's, when you had some of these time wasters wrecking you life while they surfed on tenure. While making a good amount of money and support by a union. The kids today complain about some of the most idiotic things, but its true, sometimes the profs are so had, but there is so may of getting rid of them
