I appreciate you addressing this. I wrote a long comment on your Kendrick video saying Carti represented the devil in his music and I didn’t mean that in a way like I literally think he’s satanic or representing a larger evil in hip hop but just it seems he’s trying to evoke thoughts of the devil in his art perhaps? I don’t know anything about Carti as a person but I’m a fan of his art and agree that he’s probably closer to Kendrick in artistic integrity than he is to Drake , even though on the surface the subject matter isn’t “conscious” I think Carti’s approach to making music/art is most similar to Kanye’s .
@islabee94Ай бұрын
Yes, Kanye is a good comparison. Kendrick is just such a lyrics based writer, for Ye or Carti the lyrics are secondary to the sound and vibe
@kenjihideyori9713Ай бұрын
Since the lyrics are pretty consistent throughout hi music, I think its more so evoking emotions attached to the infliction and tone of the lyrics and therefore memories as well. If were going all red weve got a very violent masculine aggressive and "rage" emotion that some enjoy. If were going location weve got a very serene feminine spacey and "psychedelic" emotion that others enjoy. However, I will note no matter which way he goes about it the lyrics arent necessarily the most positive even if we get to cash talk which can be negative in gluttony. I also think he plays monopoly with art, anything the younger generation sees now that is slightly goth or emo is now "opium". He monopolized the flow he had in the beginning now anyone that repeats a triplet is "biting carti", he monopolized the baby voice now anyone that would even want to do a squeaky high pitched voice is now "biting carti". His looks have also taken him a long way as it contributes to influence and you can see that very clearly if you look at how his fanbase acts.
@kenjihideyori9713Ай бұрын
furthermore, Carti only plans to expand his influence and this is where the emotion comes from for his artistry. There is no restriction in the self to make music for the sake of making music - without ego - without trying to appeal to the masses like kanye has.
@justmustard3338Ай бұрын
i think it’s an aesthetic that makes you think beyond the common rap tropes of money, women, drugs and murder, and in a way it also encompasses all of those things (i’m not saying rap music is demonic i just find it interesting the time we live in allows those things to become mainstream but the devil aesthetic remains a niche that many look down upon and don’t give a second thought) three 6 mafia was ahead of their time representing these ideas. on the song In-2-Deep lord infamous expresses being tricked by the devil into worshipping him. $crim is a good example of someone who used the aesthetic and has evolved since. kendrick did a great job of representing being damned without appearing to worship the devil. i don’t know what carti will do in the future but whether he sticks to it or evolves or pivots he sets himself up for success.

You hit it on the nail, Arguring with my friends about this topic last week , and from a face level I can see why they think carti is just another mumble rapper talking about the same themes money,woman,drugs but he's clearly no in the same universe as them when you dig deep. The Rage scene is heavily heavily influenced by carti , its safe to say he's the leader and everyone replicates or makes slight tweeks to his style. Carti only pushes forward with every project never looking back, each album couldn't be more different then the next and each time a sub genre and a culture tries to replicate. its clear carti doesn't chase money or main motive is to make money off his music if so he would drop music on services and not IG or go to his tours instead of canceling them or even be in the publics eye and do sponsherships such as drake with stake or 99% of these mainstream artists. Point is its very easy to look at carti and say he's just like everyone else but in reality he's in his own world
@koleking2519Ай бұрын

AAVA, I listened to the song while looking at the painting and it illicited an even stronger feeling of joy from me, it has nothing about the degenerate lyrics to do with that. @jodyisthatyou4296Ай бұрын
AVAA I feel you'd benefit greatly from listening to 2014-2015 Future, specifically Monster through Dirty Sprite 2. Kind of hard to throughly evaluate Carti right now without that base knowledge. If Carti is Rothko, Future is Rembrandt and Picasso simultaneously.

I remember making a similar analysis about Flavor Flav. His "Cold Lampin" to the uninitiated sounds like catchy nonsensical ramblings, but contained lush meaning through his use of clever word plays, rhymes, and alliterations. For that reason, the song is not only a rap classic, but a literary masterpiece on par with anything written by James Joyce, Yeats, and Butler.
@nklfootballАй бұрын
YESSSS! Carti is rap abstract expressionism!! I have thoughts (a thread... youtube is tripping right now and some comments got lost, please forgive me and follow the numbered order 😭😭):
@nklfootballАй бұрын
3. It makes me so happy that you brought up Rothko because last night when I saw that this video was going to premier this morning, I was thinking that in this painting-to-rap comparison Playboi Carti would be Polluck or Rothko (perhaps another abstract expressionist idk). If paint is the beat, as something must tie the art to a common practice/medium, then the use of voice and language is the characteristic of the brush stroke/color choice etc.
@nklfootballАй бұрын
4. Traditional representational paintings, while trying to capture some sort of realism, were also trying to tell a story. They had a focal point, a trajectory for the eye to follow. Abstract expressionist works are devoid of focus, of narrative. There is no start or end.
@nklfootballАй бұрын
5. Carti's music is the same for me. It's almost like you could play his music backwards and it wouldn't drastically change the impact or sensation of his music.
@nklfootballАй бұрын
6. Comedian Zack Fox did a funny video reviewing some up and coming artists a few years ago. One of which was 645AR. I'm not sure if 645AR is deserving of recognition in this conversation but there could be an argument he is kind of the next step after Carti in this evolution of the medium as he is even less intelligible with his words/sounds.
@nklfootballАй бұрын
7. Personally I think he probably would still fit into the rap abstract expressionist category. But I really like what Zack said, and I'm paraphrasing "if Carti is the baby voice, then 645AR sounds like the conception of life."

AVAA It's really funny how you stress how distinctive Carti's voice is with this song particularly where everyone says it sounds like Future. I almost wish I hadn't heard the snippet before so I could see if I would recognize i. I've always thought that Carti has a weird way of pronouncing things with the deep voice (which makes him stand out from Future a lot on Type Shit), which is a quirk I really like since it kind of reminds you that it's real and not just artificially pitched down. Makes it that much more expressive.

what you’re describing is a bit funny to me 7 ish minutes in. i don’t mean to generalize but i would say the average rap fan gives all the credit to the rapper, while many many many times, the production is really the key to the success of a lot of songs. and even everyday people have heard enough rap now to start to pick up on how important the beat, sound selection and arrangement are.
