Wyman means soldier in Dorset, in Orlam it’s the ghost of a soldier that haunts the protagonist

You should definitely listen to "White Chalk" and "Let England Shake" which i feel are the most sonically similar to this new album. PJ Harvey is in that pantheon of artists like Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Scott Walker and Kate Bush who have managed to stay interesting and creative throughout their careers while putting out great albums. She's brilliant. AVA!

Chalky refers to the chalk of Dorset , see her White Chalk album which is amazing and was an apparent obsession for Thom Yorke

I'm a huge fan of PJ Harvey, and have just finished writing my first novel, which is set in the Dorset countryside, so I can't wait to listen to this new album. In my opinion, Let England Shake is an absolute masterpiece.

When did I lose touch with PJ Harvey? Same way I lost touch with most music in the late 90s... I became a dad and didn't have so much spare time anymore. And my wife can't stand most of my music at the best of times. Didn't really get back on board till I stumbled on some of the stuff from Let England Shake... Was lucky enough to get to one of the spoken word Orlam events last year before the book was available and already at that point it seemed obvious to me that there would be "musical consequence" from the writing of it. If I had to say it reminded me of anything, the book itself reminds me of the writings of Iain Banks and of Neil Gaiman's more abstract stuff. Watching her perform the new album beginning to end last month was a privilege. I can think of no other musician of her generation who can get away with doing that instead of plodding the nostalgia trail. BTW school buses in the UK during PJ's childhood are most likely to have been red or green, depending on the town. And yeah... they were horrific. Also have to recommend Faroese singer Brimheim... and the song "Kafka" from her debut LP "Myself Misspelled".

in terms of modern references aside from the school bus, she also mentions pepsi and "femboys in the forest". i believe she has talked about this album being kind of out of time

I’d add Paul McCartney as a 60s musician who kept putting out some good albums through the 2000s like 2005’s Chaos and Creation in The Backyard. If you haven’t heard it, you should check it out (produced by Radiohead’s longtime producer)

As a Westcountry person, it's been fascinating to watch Polly gradually abandon Estuary English in favour of her local dialect and pronunciation. Most people from my region must learn to speak standard if they want any kind of career in the media- including many other famous musicians. It's kind of a subaltern cultural identity that is looked down upon.

I was surprised you didn’t mention how enormously which crafty Desire I want to turn into you was in that review. Like becoming once lover, the menstrual blood. Everting about it is drenched in mothers occultism. I guess this album is indeed more a pagan album. Having listened to it once I mostly thought it was another of this years nice kinda southing, kinda friendly and introspective albums. I’m thinking of Live at Bush Hall, space heavy and now this, are all in my top 4 list of albums of the year so far. I love how kind of dry this album is in its soundscape! And sometimes i thought I was listening to a current 93 song. I need to look into these lyrics!

I met my wife in 92 here in the OC. I loved the Dwarves and Gories at the time. We saw her for the first time on Jay Leno doing Rid Of Me. Ive loved everything she's done since, my wife is cool with me loving her, Im ok with my wife loving Mic Jagger! Both of us agree her best content is always the last content she creates

Nice vids prof. Do you like Sparks? Do you think you might talk about them someday? They have a new record out too which I think is pretty decent for a band that's been going on for so long...

Hey, so i'm a modern Pagan and i just wanted to add my 2 cents to a part of the album. When she keeps chanting about the Chalky Children I don't think she's talking about their literal skin (skin color isn't a very pagan concept). What matters is the location you grew up in more so. In Dorset, the ground is dominated by chalk. I'm assuming the Chalky Children is a way to say these people are a literal part of the land where they grew up at. Dorset has some famous connections to chalk en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerne_Abbas_Giant and that connection to the land where their born is a literal part of them now. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorset_Downs. Oh and if you ever want to chant around a stone circle during Halloween, ill always save a spot for you Teach ;) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osmington_White_Horse

AVAA. Dear Skye, I know you don't particularly edit your videos, however, do you in any kind need help with your thumbnails or the content you share everywhere else (instagram, tiktok)? Well if you would like some, I'm a young film and multimedia student from a foreign country and I would love to be helpful. Peace❤ :)
