The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth! 🤣🤣🤣 Also, the "personal and cultural memory" take is dead on target. Half this project is walking me down Memory Lane, through Trauma Alley and to the end of the block, Present Day. Even in hearing Kendrick's thoughts "on wax" (age showing?), I'm reliving time periods. Great music always takes the listener on journeys and adventures.

AVAA! 30:35 I actually feel like the lyrics to Luther are maybe the most important thing on this entire album, because to me, it describes why all of the destruction happened: I read Luther as a pretty direct love letter to Whitney. Starting out calling her the other half that completes him, and describing that he wants to give her everything she dreams of. Then explains that the people who harmed her, he would take them in front of God to light em up and watch them burn (“hit ‘em with that fire. Fi-fi-fire.") Finally, telling her to just chill and dance and enjoy herself while they watch, because he’s not ever gonna peace up with them. I read the chorus as describing how beauty can grow out of her circumstances. Whitney is just enjoying life and family and doing her thing and having a great relationship with Kendrick, but that ended up causing her terrible heartache. The people who came after her (including those who were cool with Drake after or acted like his slander wasn’t a big deal), Dot has absolutely no sympathy for. He wants to take away Whitney’s pain, give her everything, and see her win in the end. To me, this song says everything about why Kendrick destroyed Drake the way he did. It probably would have been one thing if Drake had stuck to only slandering him in Family Matters. But that man took to a worldwide stage to call the *love of Kendrick’s life* a secret backstabbing whore, (nevermind also branding his best friend as a liar and homewrecker). He slaaaaaaandered that woman to the world, and it caused her pain. And no way on God's green earth Dot is *ever* going to let that go IMO. Kendrick doesn’t make love songs, and yet this is one of the most beautiful love songs I’ve ever heard. He put thought and production and heart into this, and I think its inclusion is very intentional and important: to me, Luther is the explanation of why everything really went down. if Drake hadn’t tried to destroy her on a public stage, Kendrick may not have needed to so thoroughly destroy him in revenge. And every single person who stood by and downplayed it or acted like it was fine or they could get past it afterward… I think he is absolutely 10,000% finished with every single one of those people. At the end of the day, I believe that the utter destruction of Drake is really just a story - at least in part - of how much Kendrick loves Whitney 💗💗

the talking point that this album is "less conceptual, mostly bangers" is seemingly true on surface, until you dig into the threads of reincarnation, remaking the world, father and son relationships, and the healing or destroying power of music that Kendrick weaves throughout, especially illuminated in the re-written story of Lucifer's casting out of Heaven GNX is heavily in conversation with DAMN. and Mr. Morale. rather than a reluctant prophet, it seems we have us a righteous avenging angel who's trying to bring enemies in front of god and hit them strictly with that fire, but for rehabilitation not psychosis. idk if Kendrick is equipped to try to therapize Drake and the rest of the rap game, but it seems as though he wants to try

For me, GNX equals Nostalgia for me. I'm almost 18 years older than Kendrick, but with each one of his songs, they took me back to a memory in my own past. TV Off took me back to when there were no remote controls and you had to get up and physically turn off the TV or flip the channel--someone gotta do it. The sample of Luther took me back to high school and everyone was singing that song. Heart Part 6, on my did I feel that one. Not because I struggling to become a rap artist, but also striving to build my career. Dodger Blue immediately reminded me of my travels to LA (especially when I was there for a K-pop concert--iKON). We wondered all around the city and surrounding cites before riding along the coast to Seattle. I could go on and on. I didn't expect to love this album as much as I do. For me, it's truly a masterpiece because it crosses generations of listeners.

Just had an idea on the “memories” theme: I think Kendrick is thinking about the future of HipHop, at the same time he himself is not the future. By rap standards he is not a young man any more, not the kind of reckless kid transforming the art form with a sound no one has ever heard. So what he can contribute is to weed out the Drakes and to resurface the foundations so a new generation might build on it. This has to come from his memories and from leveraging the culture.

Not lazy or low-effort, just allowing humanity to come through the cracks, as it does - as it should. I think therapy helped Kendrick to stop doing what so many perfectionists do, which is handicap themselves through their need to "do it exactly right", to meet an abstract perfect standard, instead of just being flawed and human together and working things out and getting to love. Heart Pt. 6 has been making me cry every time because of that sweet, sad look back at a time that was hard but beautiful because of it. Thank you for this, Prof.

AVAA, Professor! What I find super interesting as far as the theme of memory goes is that on the 2011 Jay Rock song “Say Wassup,” Kendrick has a line saying “I’m chilling bumping Anita Baker,” which is referenced in Wacced Out Murals. And given the West Coast sounds and specifically line from TV Off of “All I Ever wanted was a black Grand National,” I feel like Kendrick is giving himself space to breathe on the whole “what will fame do to me” thing that has haunted most of his career. He’s stayed true to where he came from, he stayed true to his morals, and even though he has can see luci within himself, he’s still gonna be bumping Anita Baker like he was 13 years ago. More than memory, I see that as a declaration of consistency, of remaining tied and connected to roots. Which is super cool to see even at this stage of his career!

AVAA I don't usually comment but I think you had an amazing review, although I was confused when you said Gloria being at the end feels wrong because it talks about creativity. I feel like that interpretation applies mostly to the first half of the song, and only after you get the context. But I feel like the second half and the culmination of the song really are about love for the art, for his pen, the rap game. And I think that perfectly fits with the whole album. The "beefy" songs aren't hate towards anybody, they're a love for the tradition of competition in rap and the honesty we value and care for in the space. (European talking so I could be entirely wrong based on my context) Love the videos, love to get your insights as always, you really help people pay attention to detail with music. Only 12 minutes in, so my comment may or may not age poorly, or even be relevant to any of the discussions, but... (White guy, rural England, for context) I listen to TPAB years ago, because my musician brother said it was a 'Top of all time' album and he burned it onto my PC. I listened to it a ton, and it's an album I know very well. I heard GKMC a bunch by proxy, but never actually bothered to listen through it. My exposure to Kendrick was 'knowing' that he was a great lyricist and a single album. It wasn't until the beef that I started learning more. To begin with it was just theatre to me, and it was *really* good theatre. I found (and still do find) it hilarious; big, commercial Drake trying to throw hands against a poet, and getting fucking shredded by him. The mainstream exposure of Drake's known 'tendencies' and Not Like Us being the summer bop that shouted it for all the world to hear. It's not going to actually bring anything like 'justice', but those lyrics are going to hound him for his life. A lawsuit suggesting major botting makes me chuckle, given that I personally had it on repeat for months. After that I was wanting more Kendrick. I bought GKMC and burned it onto my PC. It's incredible, as is known. The thing I find interesting is - I haven't yet found the urge to listen to DAMN or Mr Morale. To me, disconnected from hip hop culturally (most would describe me as a metalhead) they didn't have the impact to feel 'worthwhile' above TPAB and GKMC. Even now, knowing slightly more about them, they feel like they could be too 'cerebral' for my outsider mind. GNX is different though. GNX is riding on hype - "Kendrick just dropped out of the blue", "We didn't think he'd drop this year", "It's a celebration of the west coast", "It's another Not Like Us victory lap". Kendrick, the wordsmith, has dropped an album which (without even necessarily caring for my outsider demographic) is a perfect invitation for me - "Fuck a double entendre, I want y'all to feel this shit" - and I have. I've had it on repeat since it dropped, and for the first few times I just listened to the flows and beats. I've slowly been taking the time to try to actually understand each of the songs, and really 'get' the album. The interesting thing now is that I think it's now made the other two albums more approachable. I think I'm going to end up digging into them both in the new year, and after that I'll probably explore more artists within the genre. GNX is really good, and I think that the simplified 'lack of concept' is a feature of it, not a bug. I think it would do Kendrick's eventual full discography a disservice to only be the 'smart wordsmith', because he's capable of it all, and everyone knows it. I'm looking forward to continuing on hearing your thoughts. It feels good to articulate what I've been thinking about.
@heidiholycross-lui734021 сағат бұрын
I agree that GNX is a great, approachable way to get into his other work, especially Mr. Morale. As someone else who tends toward being a metalhead, I really want to recommend the Mr. Morale track "Mother I Sober." Beth Gibbons of Portishead does the female vocals, and it's amazing the way their voices work together. Kendrick Lamar seems to have such crossover appeal for people who don't necessarily love hip hop, and I enjoy seeing other people who come from other preferred genres meeting here together.

avaa! i think the thing people arent talking about with this album is the *reason* its so straightforward, catchy, and (for lack of a better word) mainstream-aligned. this summer was him eliminating drake, this album is him trying to officially replace him. him and his team know this album was poised to get the most casual listeners of all his work on the back of the beef, and so he took the opportunity to make his case for being a real honest to god megastar. if you look at it thru this lens, not only do the bops & goofy songs have more context, the subject matter of songs like reincarnated and man at the garden really come into focus. and with heart pt 6 and gloria he isnt just putting a bow on his career so far for his existing fans, hes introducing himself to all the new ones

AVAA and I love the mix of passion and intellect in your reviews. But I also can’t help but smile because there was a Crank Lucas video maybe 7 years ago where he parodied Kendrick and imagined him titling an album “FUCK”

It's not glazing yourself. It's owning your self-worth and importance. Your perspective is very much reciprocated and understood. I run a comic/game shop and it helps make me person that has people Ask me a lot about the world around me Because I apparently ( when they tell me) explain things in a way to them that they retain better because I'm passionate/engadged about said information. So I never take that for granted. It takes legitimate skill and prowess to be a GOOD educator, which then should be respected and reviered. AVAA

Hearing you made me realize that another theme of this album is Authenticity. We our who we are because of our upbringings, our parents, grandparents and so on. We all are the embodiment of all that came before the struggles, pain, love and successes all had to happen for us to be here today both the good and the bad.

AVAA, the thing you said about the waiting for the moments is EXACTLY what i’ve been saying i love so much about this album. hey now is my favorite because of when dody6 comes in, when kendrick says “ben frank murderer”, when he says the line about “its tacky” and SOOO many more just on that one song all just hit so perfectly and make me come back to it so much. the whole album is full of that and i ADORE it all.

I'm glad I'm not crazy. I listened the first time like, "it's aight". I think it just wasn't what I expected. But then I listened again, and moments started popping out and before I knew it I listened to the album about 10 times and counting 😂

Idk Prof, I think with memory being one of the key themes of the project, ‘gloria’ is a pretty perfect song to end on. His pen has been his memory in many ways, at least to us - his audio diary. Also the last chorus by SZA having her sing “I wanna take you to euphoria” is gorgeous. Superpowers activated.

I appreciate your RE-review. TBH i haven’t listened to hip-hop consistently in 10 years, and from KDot catalog only listened to GKMC and TPAB. GNX is a definite CLASSIC. Not just a Kendrick classic but a Hip-hop Classic. I believe the reason people try to call it a mixtape is because they expect an overtly conceptual album. IMO GNX is like The Beatles “Rubber Soul”, a collection of great songs which are connected by a concept of sound/style not by subject. The production is amazing. The Spanish singing/ guitar playing throughout, the overt homage to Cali hip-hop and other regional sounds, the storytelling of “Reincarnated” and SZA singing on the two love songs makes this album a 10/10. Thanks for your reaction Prof 👍🏾

THANK YOU on debunking the “2nd Album” theory. People are on the hate train saying this is the “worst kendrick album” so they automatically think that this is just a small piece to a bigger project but NO! THIS IS THE PROJECT

Kendrick has always created these albums as conceptual projects, and everyone is trying to put this into a concept and seeing it as a collection of cool songs, but I see this as a celebration of LA culture in another way. This is a driveby. It's cruising through the opps neighbourhood in a blacked out murder machine while menacingly pointing a machine gun at people's houses. It's actually tied into a central theme of LA culture, black culture, and a promise of what is to come. It's more than just squabbling, but it's more than just reincarnation, it's more than love, more even than screwing the opps. It's kendrick showing the world that there's threat if necessary but also a better path forward. But don't get him messed up, he's the guy right now and destruction and love are possible. It's a classic. Masterpiece. Game changer.

I'm almost 100% sure in the reincarnated song he is rapping as the spirit of the devil from the beginning of the song (thats why his voice is full of rage) to the end. it's almost like all of his previous lives died because of his inability to forgive humanity/himself, then in kendricks lifetime he is going through the steps necessary to give the spirit of the devil his redemption arc.
