It is fascinating to me that individuals that perform at the level of Martin Barre are able to take life in stride and continue with their brains in normal mode. This man is a great achiever and creator of unusual and popular music. He is another great British musician.

"Nothing To Say"...in my top 10 Tull tracks of all time. Such a fantastic song as well guitar playing by Martin on the original 1970 Benefit album. Glad to see that Martin has included it in the 50 years of JT release.....a neglected live track.

I agree. It's odd that Ian Anderson didn't like it but that seems to be how these things work out sometimes. All five guys in Deep Purple didn't think Smoke on the Water was that great when they first recorded it, but it ended up being their most popular song.

Most all of their first three albums are grossly underplayed live throughout JT's history. It would seem that Ian never wanted to 'Live in the Past' with anything he did pre-Aqualung.

I got to meet and chat with Martin after a show in New Hampshire. He was such a nice, humble, genuine guy. I was a huge JT fan in the 70's as a teenager so it was great to find him to be so friendly and real. I hope top meet him again when this whole pandemic is over.

I had a similar experience with Martin, though he did seem a little shy. Martin mentions Doane , whom I've also met. Everybody loves Doane because Doane loves everybody.

I'm sorry but as much as I admire and respect Martin for being a brilliant guitarist and one of the cornerstones of my favorite groups, I can't stand the vocals on his new stuff with his current band. I love listening to the instrumentals and Mart's guitar, but when those vocals kick in, bad as Ian's voice is today I'd rather listen to Ian. Also, there is nothing better or even fresh about his new stuff. You can see the basis of it in videos all over the net. Some of the covers of Tull's music, particularly with Paul Forrest - a guy who looks and sings more like Ian did than Ian does today are so much fun to listen to ... that is fresh to me. Martin ought to work with that guy. I do like the interpretation of SeaLion with the solo.

I think Martin''s re-arragements are superb. Dan sings almost a little too much like post 200 cigarettes-a-day Ian Anderson.

I wish someone would ask him about his guitar parts and solos, and if he or Ian wrote them, and about what percentage or each. When I hear Martin's solo stuff he has a very symmetrical style, it is very classical almost, but his solos with Tull are the kind of open ended melodies that Ian writes so well.

I know Martin wrote the lead on Aqualung. I would imagine the lead parts were all his own contributions throughout JT history.

@@Malibu1515 Martin did not write the "motive" for Aqualung, he improvised the solo. Is that what you are talking about? I don't think most of Martin's parts were written by Martin, but the interpretations were. When you listen carefully over a long period of time you can recognize Ian's style and Martin's style. To me, Ian's style is much more ... hard to describe since I am not a musician, but it is expansive, and open, whereas Martin always constrains his playing, he does a kind of call and reply, tightly binding up his playing. I have all of Martin's solo albums and some of the songs are really amazing, like "Winter Snowscape" and others, but most of them have this closed classical structure. When it comes to improvising with a Tull song, he is awesome, but also I think Ian has input and veto power. I was just posting about the Trio Instrumental off the new A La Mode 40th anniversary edition of "A" and wondering who wrote it. Martin's guitar solos are amazing, but the overall structure and progressions sound a bit Ian-ish to me.

Yes that's what I mean by "he wrote the lead". I'd like to think as in "Aqualung" that Ian just said, okay Martin, your turn to add the lead, and Martin went and did it on his own. I've never separated Ian and Martin guitars because Ian was the flute(and acoustic guitar)player and Martin the guitar player so I thought Martin played the guitar leads on his own. Song structure is entirely different and I can see Ian having total input in writing those parts for all the instruments Definitely will be exploring his solo lp's. Didn't realize he has done 4! Got a particularly good one to try first?

@Steven Bradford Ian has actually done 6 solo albums, ( 8 if you count the classical JT and TAAB Live ) Walk Into Light Divinities Secret Language of Birds - SLOB as it is known Rupi's Dance Thick As A Brick 2 - TAAB2 Homo Erraticus > Got a particularly good one to try first? While I can wax positive and negative on all of them I am not sure I want to stick my neck out and raise any one above another. Divinities is instrumental pseudo-classical new-age, the most different. I would say *Walk* *Into* *Light* and *TAAB2* are the most Jethro-Tull-like. SLOB and Rupi's Dance are the most acoustic. Homo Erraticus .. that is one that never caught on so much with me, I think it is "thin". Few solos, slap-dash arrangements, not the usually Tull complexity and texture in its arrangement, but still not bad. I think you can look them up on KZbin and listen to low-fi versions of just about all of them. The sheer amount of amazing music Ian has produced amazed me whenever I take a look at it. I guess they cannot all be winners.

@@justgivemethetruth I was talking Martin Barre not Ian Anderson. I have Divinities, SLOB, Rupi's Dance. Am well aware of Ian's solo work. Was wanting a recommend of a solo Martin Barre lp to listen to.

Ian Anderson could not have made a better choice in picking Martin Barre to replace Mick Abrahams. I can see no other guitar player in his place that would've given them the sound they had. I wish him all the best in his version of Jethro Tull.

A band. Ian's is not a band, and Martin's is half a band. Personality is what makes a band not supporting musicians who are inter- changeable.

I never will understand why Ian Anderson decided to disband Jethro Tull , but to me the fact to not continue with Martin Barre is more inexplicably. Jethro Tull without Martin never is Jethro Tull , that is Ian Anderson band .

@@aliengrey6052 Yes of course you wanted to say to decrease his music , Ian Anderson currently cannot sing , does not play the acoustic guitar only play the flute as ever but the biggest mistake was to be accompanied by bad musicians , is that the way for you to increase his music ? , if so then you are deaf .
