STORYLINE:
Abdurrahman Wahid was once touted as the leader who could steer Indonesia to recovery after four decades of dictatorship and a paralysing economic crisis.
Now, he looks set to be removed by the very legislature that picked him as president 21 months ago.
In the early hours of Monday, 23 July, Wahid issued a decree suspending the national assembly and ordered new elections.
But lawmakers said they would dismiss him anyway, and the security forces declared they would disobey his order to block his impeachment.
The 61-year-old Muslim cleric - almost blind and weakened from two strokes - had used his influence as an intellectual and a moderate religious leader to promote social tolerance across the sprawling archipelago.
Now, however, critics accuse him of erratic rule, taking long trips to foreign capitals during major outbreaks of sectarian violence and failing to set a cohesive policy to save the economy.
In the country's first free elections in 1999, Wahid's party was placed fourth behind the party of Megawati Sukarnoputri, the daughter of Indonesia's founding president Sukarno, who now appears likely to take over from Wahid.
Wahid took the top job through last-minute political maneuvering, securing the support of a fragile coalition.
Initial optimism about his rule quickly faded.
Today, few Indonesians believe Wahid is the best man to consolidate Indonesian democracy following a brutal 32-year dictatorship by former President Suharto that ended in rioting in 1998.
Political parties that gave Wahid crucial support when he ran for president have abandoned him, and he outraged Muslim groups when he suggested lifting a decades-old ban on communism and opening trade links with Israel.
She refused.
Police say he is hiding somewhere in Jakarta.
