I do really want to see more of your Ghost content please - I came here today for that reason, liked and subscribed 😉 I’ve just moved to it from WP for my new newsletter/blog and will set up two tiers of membership. I’ll write in Ulysses and commit from there. Specifically, I’m interested in the little things to polish my site. I’m not interested in the big bells and whistles (I can use WP for that). So, for more stuff I’d like to see, what about creating a ‘contents list’? You mentioned a few things and I liked all those. The. There’s the issue of #tags vs #tags and #categories in WP: I’m going to miss categories, so any advice? Some simple css injection to unpick font size and colour in menus/header/footer and so forth? Anyway, excited to see where you go with Ghost on your chin 🎉

I am running ghost self hosted for one of my blogs. Using mailgun for transactional emails and newsletters. I have used Wordpress for 10 years and I still use it. Thanks Mr. Swift. You have perked my interest. Ghost reminds me of user-friendly blogspot in 2008 (for me a plus). Still considering many alternatives to WordPress or WP itself. I'm brand new to web publishing. I wrote up a wishlist of 20 factors, so will contact Ghost about my dealmaker/breakers... 1. Very little corporate 'censorship' of content beyond what is legal in jurisdiction (presumably somewhere in USA) 2. Can use my own domain name 3. 24/7 phone customer support when hosted 4. Works well on a Mac Already I see downsides though - not much opportunities for support on Fiverr and none of my friends use it.

Why is the user experience similar for Ghost and Notion?
@vlvr Жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for the video. The footage of the Ghost interface was extremely helpful. I'm wondering about two things I'm not clear about. Perhaps you have answers? Is there a limit to how many photos you can upload using Ghosts own hosting? Most hosts have tiers based on space and transfer but Ghost does not mention these things in their pricing, only members. This is my second question: is a member just whoever signs up to your mailing list? If so, does that mean views / GB transferred via the website don't count at all and that pricing is simply based on how many subscribers you have? Wouldn't this allow someone to theoretically have a resource-intensive website with no subscribers for extremely cheap? Thank you.
@dave-swift Жыл бұрын
Hey @vlvr, glad you liked the video. With Ghost Pro there is no limits on the number of files you add, but there is a limit on the file size. If you have the lowest plan you can upload 5mb files and if you have the creator plan you can upload 100mb files. Members are anyone who signs up, paid or unpaid. Yes, this theoretically means you can have unlimited traffic to your site for cheap :)

You didn't mention 1 more, but very important thing about Ghost, like any other site built with SSR for doing SEO or ranking higher. Google doesn't like such sites made with a lot of scripts, like SPA sites (react/node/next js etc.) Because it always take much more resources from Google to process JS site (obviously why) instead of clean HTML version (and recognize content correctly also). Yeap. Ghost is fast for a user and better for UIx. But not for google bots and not for google data bases. But when it comes to index your site ... Be ready to spend tons of hours to fix it.
@dave-swiftАй бұрын
Thanks for bringing this up! I want to clarify something important: Ghost actually uses static site generation (SSG), not server-side rendering (SSR). This means that when Ghost builds your site, it pre-renders all pages into plain HTML files that are served directly to both users and search engines. There's no additional JavaScript processing needed for core content. While you're absolutely right that Google can struggle with heavily JavaScript-dependent sites (especially client-side rendered SPAs), Ghost's architecture specifically avoids this issue. The JavaScript in Ghost is primarily used for the admin interface and enhanced functionality, not for serving the main content. In fact, you can view the source code of any Ghost site and see the complete HTML with all content right there - no JavaScript required for indexing. Ghost also automatically generates sitemaps and implements SEO best practices out of the box. That said, I'd be interested to hear more about the specific indexing issues you've encountered. What kind of problems did you need to fix?

Nice video Dave. Would it be fair to say that Ghost is a email sending provider that also allows to create your business website?
@dave-swift2 жыл бұрын
Hmm, no I don't think so. Ghost is really a blog first. The ability to create landing pages is limited. The email capabilities are limited to newsletters and there isn't much in terms of analytics. Most marketers are still going to want to pair Ghost with something like ConvertKit (in fact they have a zapier integration to keep members in sync with ConvertKit). Think of Ghost as a Patreon or Substack replacement. Something that is open source and lower fee for the creator. Or it could just be your business blog, like how Cloudflare, DuoLingo Unsplash, & OpenAI use it.

@@dave-swift I got excited reading your comment yesterday so I tried to use the Github Actions today and I failed. Basically my Github action failed to upload. Granted, maybe I made a mistake somewhere...but it did work on a self-hosted server. And yeah, Mailgun is very expensive ($35 - though apparently there is a way to secretely downgrade to their Flexible billing plan which could be free if you don't send any emails) and without it Memberships won't work on self-hosted solution :/.
